Literature Review Findings“Suddenly, I possessed
the means to take the tools of my teaching—class discussion, essay writing, and literature—and launch them into a different dimension, a different space…”(Rochette 2007) on using technology in her classroom for the first time.
“When technology leads to rethinking the curriculum to fully incorporate new tools, the impact can be profound.” (Kleiman, 2000)
BackgroundStudents use technology in their lives away from the classroomTechnology helps to keep students engagedTechnology allows students to have fun while learning.
Purpose/RelevanceWill using technology enhance student
learning in the classroom? What types of technology are best suited for
schools? What if I (the teacher) am not tech savvy?
Data Collection/MethodDuring the school year 07/08, all material
was presented via lecture only. Worksheets were given for review and
reinforcement
During the school year 09/10, all material was converted to power point presentations
Slide shows were used for review Slide shows were used on a smartboard as
interactive games.
How data was collected: Cont.I used student records from 2 different school
years07/08, eight students were taught content all
year without the aid of power point presentations.
09/10, eight students were taught with power point presentations.
Cumulative folders were looked for dataStudent progress reports were also a source
of data.Comparing student pass rates on state
standardized and benchmark tests
Results: Comparing results based on technology usage….
With out technologyAverage student grade was 8360% pass rate on benchmark testingAverage State Standardized test score was 423
(below 400 = fail, 400 to 499 = pass, 500-600 = pass advanced proficiency.) All scores fell within the pass range.
Results: Comparing results based on technology usage continued….With Technology
Average student grade was 9080% pass rate on benchmark testsAverage State Standardized test score was 477
(below 400 = fail, 400 to 499 = pass, 500-600 = pass advanced proficiency) 3 students received pass advanced proficiency scores!
Conclusion:
Based on data collection:Technology obviously enhances student
learning in the classroom.Student in-class participation doubledHomework and independent projects were
completed in a more acceptable and timely manner.
Daily attendance increased
