Definitions – Petal Count Terms
Single = 4-8 single row
Semi-Double = 9-16
Double = 17-25
Full = 26-40
Very Full = 41+
What makes “Easier Care” Roses? Grow Well on their own
Minimal Irrigation (Can thrive on nature’s water)
Drought Tolerant
Minimal, if any Spraying
Good Sun exposure

A Demonstration Garden for the citizensof
Sarasota County
• 1845 US Government Public Land turned over to Florida when itjoined the Union
• 1916 Edson and Nettie Keener Keith purchased the 60 acre land• Moved here from Chicago to live year round• Built Italian Renaissance Mansion on the property
• 1939 Second owner Mae Hansen Prodie (Barbie Doll Wardrobes)• Husband oversaw Phillippi Plantation Restaurant & Inn• After the death of Mrs. Prodie in 1986, Sarasota County Purchased
• The first garden was built close to today’s location
• Nettie was a member ofMable Ringling’s Founder’s Garden Club
• Where possible, we have tried to duplicate some of heroriginal roses or at least the roses planted over the last20 years

The Demonstration Garden Over 20 Years ago the B-SRS went to Dr. Manners
Obtained cuttings from many Bermuda Mystery and OGRPlanted them in Phillippi Estate Park, Sarasota
In March 2009 we returned to that garden
B-SRS offered to take over maintenance and invigorate
It took 3 seconds for the County of Sarasota to agree
We found the gardens in only fair shape
Several key OGRs were in final stages of life
Decided to retain OGR/EarthKind orientation
What is Unique about thePhillippi Estate Rose Garden? A collection of 70 different antique varieties
Roses that require no spraying of pesticides
Micro Irrigation to each plant (cost saving of ~50%) Pinpoints water to where it does the most good

The Nettie Keener Keith Rose Garden and the RinglingGardens are the principal gardens featuring antique roses inthis part of Florida
Most of these Roses are Antiquesbut have many other qualities-- The oldest rose in this garden is ‘Le Vésuve’ 1825
There are 6 “found roses” in the beds
From old churches, public buildings, cemeteries by roserustlers

Purchase or Contribute new plants By November 2009 50 Plants in place (Dedication)
