Cross-district iPad User Day we hosted at the

middle school. We wanted to create an opportunity

for teachers and librarians incorporating iPads to

share apps, procedures, and new ideas. There

were over 40 teachers/librarians in

attendance.

Libraries are part of Common Core

http://www.nysl.nysed.gov/libdev/commoncore/13lib_cc.htm

• Inquiry and inquiry-based learning are embedded throughout the Common Core and form the foundation of the type of learning libraries support best: thinking creatively, problem solving, information searching, and the use of technology.

• The Common Core encourages flexible communication and collaboration. Libraries are the ideal vehicle for this as they connect communities – children, teachers, parents.

In collaboration with a Social Studies teacher we had 7th grade students research landmark Supreme Court cases in groups using books, websites and databases and compile their research into a portfolio. They then wrote a argument giving key details of the case using text based evidence and primary sources. Finally they presented this information in a creative way to the class and a panel of teachers.

This focuses on providing library space that showcases student self-directed inquiry where the student's thinking and new understandings are evident, and opportunities for discussion are generated by determining how best to share projects.

In one enrichment class I had two girls that were from Vietnam and they wanted to do research on this country for their PowerPoint presentations. I had seen a commercial on TV that mentioned a woman, Quyen Luong, a Vietnamese woman going to be here in the United States for 9 weeks and that she was teaching a class at the local college, MVCC.

I called over there to arrange a meeting. She was very interested in coming over to Columbus so that the two girls could interview her for their research. It was a great experience for both parties and it was a great collaboration between two educational facilities.

A collaborative project between our local University at Albany, the Albany Fund for Education, teachers at our school, and the school librarian to bring in poet Lemon Andersen for two days to meet the students (about 200 total). They participated in book discussions and attended the one-man play at the University.

This partnership won a Presidential Award for Community Engagement recently by the University at Albany.

Evidence of success

• School Libraries Work - Scholastic (2008)19 states and 1 province can’t be wrong:• “A school library program that is adequately staffed,

resourced, and funded can lead to higher student achievement regardless of the socioeconomic or educational levels of the community.”

• Syracuse University study (2009)•Research studies clearly established the relationship between well-staffed, well-funded schoollibraries student achievement on test scores.

NYSED/NYLA Library Summit 2014

• Two-day School Library Summit • Mission: Enable all New York State students to be college

and career ready by strengthening the critical role of school librarians in teaching and learning.

• Vision: Through a partnership of professional library associations, school library systems, state education offices, educators, and community members, a framework and plan will be created to ensure all students have access to quality school library programs, relevant resources and a highly-skilled, certified school librarian in every school.

We have a big awards ceremony each year where the kids choose their favorite books from various categories. It is very motivating for the students because they want to read all of the books nominated so they can vote for their favorites. We call it "The Burnies". Kids dress up as the characters in the books and then say a few words about their character.

Then the "winner" is presented with "the Burnie". It's great fun for the whole school and definitely a highlight of the year for us.
