Using Kudos

1

There are four main routes through Kudos. In order to find out the best route for young people, they will have four starting points. These are:

1. Take the test to find your perfect career2. Explore subjects3. Explore work areas4. Explore careers

Young people will then be given a recommended route based on these four choices.

Your students should know:

• That the relevance of the career suggestions will only be as good as the information they enter.

• That Kudos will only suggest careers suitable for the highest qualifications they are planning to achieve.

• That they should ideally answer all likes and dislikes questions (117 in total) before looking at the career suggestions.

• How their likes and dislikes are used to suggest suitable careers for them. Each career is linked to a specific set of features. Whether the career is the right level for the user determines its level of suitability.

• How to respond to each aspect of work question: ‘Like Very Much’, ‘Like’, ‘Does Not Matter’, ‘Dislike’ or ‘Dislike Very Much’. This requires some reflection and an understanding of what the question means – the supporting explanations can help with this.

Students will be asked to take a look at the career ideas they might like. They can raise their expected qualification level at this stage using the ‘Future Booster’ option. This will produce a different list of careers reflecting the new level.

This is the classic CASCAID matching process and is particularly helpful for those young people who have yet to start thinking about careers. This assessment is refered

to in Kudos as MyFuture.

Young people will answer questions which are designed to find out exactly what they like and dislike about a

number of features of work. The user can also view the questions in focus mode which means they only view

one question at a time.

Top Tips:

These are suggestion; if students are not happy with the results, they should try to discover why the careers have been suggested. Encourage them to click on the details button to see the features of the career and their answers; if the answers do not seem appropriate in the context, they can change them. This is a process where they learn about themselves and careers – experimentation and reflection should be encouraged.

Each career has comprehensive information covering the work activities involved, pay, entry routes, contacts and a lot more. Most careers have videos. Careers can also be added and compared in ‘My Careers’ on the right. This allows the students to compare three careers which interests them the most. The comparison tool compares MyFuture, salary range, number of vacancies in the UK today, apprenticeships within 20 miles, colleges with course within 20 miles, qualification level, features of work and related subject area.

This is an ideal route for your students who have a rough idea of what they

want to do later in life but are not quite sure about the career direction

that they want to follow. This route allows students to scroll through a list of over 100 subjects and careers such as Accounting, Art and Design, English

to Floristry.

Students can find out more about their interested subject by clicking on

the title or they can click on details where they can explore the subject

more. Students can also add the subject to their choices by clicking the

thumbs up icon and will be able to view in my subjects.

Students understand subjects and Kudos allows them to see what

careers are suited to the subjects they like. Students can click on the

career title they like, this will open up a section which explains the career

and includes a video so that students can gain hands-on information from

experienced individuals. They can also click on details for more information

or click add which will add the career to my careers. Students will also be

able to view how Kudos has matched the career according to their skills.

This is a powerful tool for students who have careers in mind and

therefore don’t need to go through the classic CASCAID matching

process. Students can search for the career they have in mind and see the

career that is suitable for them, or if not, why not. They can also click on ‘Details’ to find out more about the

career.

If the student has entered health issues that may be an issue for a

career, this is also highlighted. Very occasionally careers may be removed

from the suggestions list but only if there is a statutory health requirement

(there are very few careers where this is the case). It is important that students discuss such issues either with a teacher or an adviser to get

personalised advice.
