Overview - Facility Power Quality monitoring via Cloud
An automated utility data collection tool. MeterNet is the Department of State’s centralized, real-time, and automated smart-metering system for utility data. Securely tunneling through Internal and External networks, data is transferred from U.S. Embassies and Consulates to Department offices in Washington, DC. Centralized data collection enables facility managers and management officers to identify system anomalies, track energy use, and identify opportunities for conservation and cost savings. Additionally, MeterNet establishes reliable baselines of consumption that are required to track and report improvements made by posts.
![Page 22: Using IoT to Enable Smart Cities and Smart Infrastructure | AWS Public Sector Summit 2016](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022070602/587a22281a28abbd388b458d/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
Overview - Facility Power Quality monitoring via CloudThe data is also used to prioritize renewable energy and water projects as well as leveraging private financing. MeterNet supports the Energy Policy Act of 2005 (EPAct), which requires all federal buildings over 464 square meters be metered to facilitate efficient energy and water use. MeterNet enables the Department to monitor its energy, natural gas and water consumption in real-time. Metering helps posts identify ways to conserve resources and reduce operational costs. It also enables management to prioritize:• Energy & water conservation and other utility conservation projects• Energy reduction competitions and campaigns• Energy power purchase agreements and energy saving performance
contracts

Overview - Facility Power Quality monitoring via Cloud
Power Quality Meters. Locations connected to unstable power grids, with a history of electrical equipment damage, receive a Power Quality Meter (PQM) package to monitor energy coming off the grid. These advanced power meters enable users to track power quality in addition to energy consumption. This offers posts the data required to respond to and report power quality problems from the grid as they arise.

Facility Power Quality monitoring via Cloud
Benefits Summary - Why did OBO and the Department invest in Power Quality Monitoring via Cloud?
Cost Saving. Actively monitoring and analyzing power quality trends and events will provide data that facility managers and engineers can use to improve maintenance management processes. Time Saving. Saving time to repair or improve facility systems by providing support to post before equipment failure. Presently the majority of projects for electrical are reactions to failures or emergencies reported from the field, and we send teams to follow-up.
Continuous Improvement. We have limited visibility of the variable power system conditions in our facilities. We rely on isolated reports and random samples of power quality. Continuous trending and active PQ monitoring provides a robust tool to conduct thorough and sound engineering analysis. Ultimately leading to improved systems designs and operational efficiency.
