Goals of Meeting• Understand how electronic data is used to

assess quality and efficiency; particularly for physicians and physician practices

• Understand the strengths and weaknesses of using electronic data, as well as how weaknesses can be minimized

• Gain insight into the implications of using electronic data for performance reporting for Medicare policy

• Discuss opportunities to advocate for its appropriate use in assessing performance


Overview of Electronic Data

• Who produces electronic data?

– Health plans, purchasers, public health agencies, providers, pharmacies

• What type of information is available in electronic data?

– Demographic, diagnoses, procedures, revenue codes, lab results, prescriptions filled


Issues to Consider

• Accuracy and validity of performance reporting

• Integrity of data

• Burden of collection

• Patient privacy


Future Directions

• Adding data fields to assess performance

• Electronic health record

• Interoperability standards

• Platform for expanded rewards for performance
