Kentucky is famous for its Bourbon, but craft breweries have brought vari-ety and vibrancy to local cultures. Nationally, the Brewers Association esti-mates that 22.2 million barrels of craft beer were produced in 2014, an 18%increase in volume and a 22% increase in retail dollar value since 2013, whilethe overall beer industry grew by only 0.5% in 2014. Kentucky’s share of thenation’s craft brewing is small, but growing. According to the BrewersAssociation, there are 33 breweries in Kentucky, and 18 are craft breweries.Lexington is currently home to six brewing companies – Alltech, BlueStallion, Chase, Country Boy, Ethereal, and West Sixth.

According to the Beer Institute, in 2014 the beer industry has added 8,079direct jobs to Kentucky’s economy with a total payroll of $246 million. Whenindirect and induced jobs are included, such as in agriculture and retail,Kentucky’s beer industry supports a total of 16,322 jobs, paying $607 millionin wages, $429 million in tax revenue, and producing a total economic con-tribution of $2.19 billion. Furthermore, consumers’ willingness to spendmore of their disposable income on craft beer indicates a healthy economy. On August 11th, Bluegrass Tool & Industrial broke ground on an

expansion of its Lexington operations with Lexington Mayor Jim Grayand Commerce Lexington Inc. Board Chair Herb Miller. Bluegrass Tool& Industrial is a one-stop supplier for industrial manufacturers special-izing in hoist and crane sales, fabrication, electrical and mechanicalcontracting. LEADERSHIP LEXINGTON CLASS PROJECT UPDATE

A Leadership Lexington class project which hasties to the 2012 Commerce Lexington Inc.Leadership Visit to San Antonio is nearing itscompletion. A group that started to work onimproving pedestrian way-finding in downtownLexington during the 2012-13 LeadershipLexington program and continued that effort longafter the class concluded began to see way-findingsigns being installed in downtown Lexington inmid-August. These signs are “beefed up” versionsof those from the pilot program put forth by thegroup.

In total, more than 100 way-finding signs willbe installed in two phases at nearly 60 intersec-tions in the downtown area and around theUniversity of Kentucky and TransylvaniaUniversity. The new signs are expected to be putup within a four to six-week period.

During Commerce Lexington’s trip to SanAntonio in 2012, the decision was made to utilizethe Leadership Lexington program as a potentialconduit to move some of the trip’s recommenda-tions forward. One of the recommendations fromSan Antonio called for enhanced pedestrian way-finding signs downtown. A Leadership Lexingtongroup called “VisionLex” took hold of that recom-mendation, collaborated with the LexingtonDowntown Development Authority and theDowntown Lexington Corporation, and workedthrough logistics with VisitLEX, Kentucky Utilities, and the Lexington-Fayette Urban CountyGovernment to make this project a reality.

Pictured above left to right: Renee Jackson(Downtown Lexington Corp.), Leadership Lexington2013 graduates John Hinkel and Andy Shea, andMary Quinn Ramer (VisitLEX) with one of the newWalkLEX signs that are appearing around downtown.Other Leadership Lexington class members who con-tributed greatly to make this project a reality were DiBoyer, Ron Edmondson, Will Graham, Teddi Hibberd,Ashley Chatham, Alan Waddell, Sarah Sloan, LanceMann, and Patrick Quirk.

The Leadership Lexington class recently partici-pated in its Orientation Retreat, where class mem-bers came together to get to know each other, aswell as learn how our personality traits may be dif-ferent in the work environment versus the socialenvironment.

On August 11th, the journey began with mem-bers meeting up with their respective driving groupsto make the trek to Jabez. Leadership Lexingtonclass members stayed at the Lake Cumberland 4-HEducational Center where many groups from allover the state have used this facility to help theirorganizations learn about one another and grow.Being part of this retreat wouldn’t have been possi-ble without our wonderful presenting sponsorKentuckyOne Health. Opening Remarks wheregiven by Lynnette Rauvola Bouta from KentuckyOneHealth.

The day started with mixers led by Dr. VirgilGrant that the group participated in to get to knoweach other and learn why teamwork is very impor-tant in any group environment. Over/Under andSquare were two unique learning opportunitieswhere teams stood in lines and passed a ball overand under the other person to see through team-work who could get the ball to the end of the line thequickest. If we thought that activity was easy, wewere soon met with a challenge of being blindfoldedto help our team form a square, which proved to bedemanding, but we were successful. These mixerstaught us so much about our group dynamic andhow teamwork is crucial.

Classmates were excited to pitch their class proj-

ect ideas, where we had seven projects pitched andfour selected. These projects will be our communityprojects for the year, and we will work on them tohelp enrich the community and help make our areaa better place for the citizens we serve.

More mixers occurred where the teams werechallenged in the Zoom and Egg Drop activities. These activities taught us even more about whycommunicating with your team is important andunderstanding how each person on your teambrings a special element to your project. The nightended with a bonfire during which team memberswere able to interact with people that they may nothave met, as well as enjoy s’mores by the fire.

Friday, August 12th, was spent with Ryan Lisk ofLisk Associates who helped each of us individuallygo through our DISC Assessments. Our class wasthoroughly educated on what DISC motivatorsmean and how this would play out in our communi-ty based project groups. This was an eye-openingexperience for our class and many were very movedby the report as it told a story that educated andassessed who you are as a person and what itmeans to be you.

The day ended with group leaders bringingtogether their group members to work on individualcommunity projects. This time was spent to lay thegroundwork for each team and an update was givenby each team to inform the class of progress andhow other members may be able to help each other.Overall, the experience was an exciting way to kick-off the Leadership Lexington class year, and we lookforward to what we are going to be able to accom-plish with our group projects this year.
