––– Welcome from Dean Koker Good evening and welcome to the 5th annual Musica Viva! I have attended many extraordinary and moving student performances on the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh campus. In addition to being entertained, the performances give me a time to reflect and imagine. I am glad you are able to join me for this evening of music as you assist in providing the best education possible for our students. It is our goal that students become well-rounded individuals who are able to critically examine the human condition as a result of the study of cultures, science and art. Our extremely talented faculty and staff in the Department of Music prepare students to work through complicated and uncertain situations. Our music program is part of a comprehensive education that empowers individuals with broad knowledge and transferable skills, and a strong sense of values, ethics and civic engagement. It is one that is characterized by challenging encounters with important issues and leads to successful and remunerative careers in a wide array of professions with a strong likelihood of achieving long-term professional success both inside and outside the music profession. Enjoy Musica Viva! and know that your generosity will be rewarded with the knowledge that you are supporting our citizens and musicians of tomorrow. John Koker, Dean College of Letters and Science

Welcome––– Chris Kuborn is a long-time jazz lover, radio broadcaster and composer and has been involved with music and broadcasting for most of his life. Whether he was subjecting his family to recorded “broadcasts” from the bedroom as a kid or working through college at WRST, WBLV and WOUB or podcasting “Pan In Harmony” the only steel drum music podcast to date; Kuborn has always enjoyed “bringing the music to the masses.” Kuborn holds a MM from Ohio University in music composition and a BM in music from UW Oshkosh. He has been playing percussion and steel drum around the world for more than 20 years, including the 2015 Panorama Competition with “birdsong” – Andy Narell’s Trinidadian-based 100+ member steel band. He is currently a faculty-member in the Northeast Wisconsin Technical College in the Digital Media Technology Program where he focuses on audio and video production and Internet broadcasting. He is also an adjunct instructor in music business at UW Oshkosh. In 2009, Kuborn won the prestigious PRX Zeitfunk Award – “Most Licensed Debut Producer” – for his show: Jazz Odyssey, and has placed in the top 10 most downloaded shows each year since. Kuborn is the host of the music program “Jazz Odyssey” which airs on WPNE-FM and WHND-FM on Wednesday evenings at 10 p.m. Learn more about “Jazz Odyssey” at jazzodc.com.

––– Our Thanks to Wally Messner Wally Messner, M.S.T., B.M.E. is retiring at the end of the spring semester after an impressive 41-year career teaching and leading the UW Oshkosh Department of Music’s Recording Technology program. A UW Oshkosh alumnus, Wally joined the UW Oshkosh music faculty in 1974 and founded UWO’s Recording Technology program. That program was the only one like it in the state at the time. To this day it remains the state’s only comprehensive four-year recording technology program, in which music students can earn a Bachelor of Music degree with an emphasis in recording technology and/or music business. The program continues to thrive and has seen great success under Messner’s direction. UW Oshkosh students won two Grammys from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, two alumni have won Grammys and one alumni has won an Emmy for sound. Graduates of this program continue to be competitive and in high demand in the studio, in the classroom and throughout the various sub-fields of recording and live sound. Wally Messner has toured throughout the U.S. with various recording celebrities and engineered in Nashville, Tenn., Mississippi, Alabama and throughout the Midwest. He has remained active as a session musician, engineer and producer. His legacy at UW Oshkosh will long be remembered and appreciated.
