Games 45-47 eCU 2017 UsF BaseBall Game Notes4

NOTESHISTARTIC The Bulls saw their 19-game winning streak snapped on at No. 15 FGCU on March 22 in a close 2-1 defeat. USF lost twice last week, which was more than it had the first five weeks of the season. But the streak will go down in the record books, as it was the second longest in program history. The Bulls did not taste defeat for over a month, saw two men hit over .400, the arms strike out 215 while posting a 1.92 ERA. USF scored over seven runs per game and hit .316 as a unit.

RANK TOP Following a 2-1 series win over then No. 23 Houston this past weekend, the Bulls finally entered the rankings in the top three polls. USF checked in at No. 24 according to Baseball America, marking the first time it has been ranked by the publication since May 6, 2013. USF is ranked No. 25 according to D1 Baseball and No. 23 in the USA Today poll. The Bulls are ranked as high as 18 in Perfect Game's edition of the college poll.

THIRTY EARLY The Bulls became the 11th team in the nation to reach 30 wins this season with a 4-2 win at Memphis on April 21. In doing so, they became the fastest team in program history to reach the 30-win mark since the 1996 squad that did so on April 12 of that year.

OKKKKKKKK The Bulls' pitchers are averaging an astounding 10.6 strikeouts per 9.0 innings to lead the country. USF has topped 500 K's in back-to-back seasons and is on pace to fan over 650 batters this year.

HIT IT? QUIT IT The Bulls' pitching staff has limited the opposition to 7.07 hits per nine inninngs this season, ranking fifth in the country. The six arms used against No. 3 FSU on Feb. 21 combined to hurl a one-hitter and the four used against Villlanova on March 8 allowed just two hits.

YEARNING FOR RUNS As if the strikeouts and ability to disallow hits wasn't enough, the USF arms hold a combined 2.77 ERA, a figure that stands seventh on the Division I circuit.

WHIP, IT'S GOOD For you non-baseball aficionados, WHIP is a sabermetric measurement of the number of baserunners a pitcher has allowed per nine innings. The Bulls' pitchers are amongst the best in the country at limiting the number of base runners with a nack for working 1-2-3 frames. USF sits sixth in the country with a 1.16 WHIP. MIGHTY MERRELL Junior Kevin Merrell opened the new year hitting .400 with a pair of RBI, as he walked four times in a 6-0 win on Feb. 19 against Iowa, tying for the second most base on balls in program history. Merrell has walked four times in three separate games this season and at the dish he currently sits first on the team and 13th in the country with a .403 average. He has scored 35 runs and has 17 steals. He was named the AAC player of the Week on March 13 following a five-game weak in which he hit .526, drove in a personal-high five RBI and powered two homers over the right field fence in a March 8 win over Villanova. Entering the contest, Merrell had hit just one homerun in his career, coming Feb. 23 of last year.

EVERY DAY WE HIT The Bulls offense has certainly held its own this season, coming to the aid of the arms. Led by five players hitting over .300, the USF bats are hitting .303 to rank 33rd in the country, first in the conference, and sit 22nd in the nation with a .397 on base percentage. Having tallied double-digit runs twice all of last season, USF has done so seven times this year. The bats have clubbed 10 or more hits 24 times this season and have produced at least 13 hits 15 times. The Bulls plated 14 men on March 19 against Harvard, marking the first time the team has scored 14 runs in a game since March 12, 2012.

RY-WIN VALDES Redshirt-senior Ryan Valdes was forced to miss the 2016 campaign due to Tommy John Surgery, but is back this season and has filled any role he has been assigned to. He has made four starts, has appeared in 15 games and holds a team-low 2.70 ERA, good for third in the league. He has struck out 49 and has posted nine wins, as he is a perfect 9-0 on the year. The nine wins are tied for the most in the nation.

I'LL HAVE A JOE CAV Junior righty Joe Cavallaro was a member of the starting rotation last season due to the four arms being out that underwent Tommy John Surgery. Cavallaro is back to his best role, often the first reliever brought in from the pen. Cavallaro holds a 1.88 ERA in 23 appearances, and he has struck out 59 batters in 43.0 innings, averaging a team-best 12.3 strikeouts per nine innings. Cavallaro picked up two saves over the weekend's series win against Houston, pitching 4.1 scoreless innings. He was named the American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday.

ON THE BORDER Luke Borders is doing everything a designated hitter is asked to do. Now in his senior season, Borders is having arguably his best year. He sits third on the team with a .356 batting average, has scored a team-leading 37 runs, driven in a conference-high 44 men and has reached base safely in all but two games. NOTESDUKE HAS MASTERED Junior Duke Stunkel Jr. currently sits second on the Bulls with a .379 average, has scored 26 runs and leads the team with 11 doubles. He had not been in the lineup prior to this past weekend since April 11 due to a wrist injury. Stunkel Jr. hit a team-high .538 during a series win over Houston, as he was named to the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll. Stunkel Jr. is batting .417 during conference play.

SHANE-O-MAC Redshirt-freshman Shane McClanahan missed the 2016 season due to an arm injury and made his long-awaited debut on Feb. 18 against Iowa. McClanahan tossed 4.0 scoreless innings of one-hit baseball and struck out nine batters. His fastball was in the low-mid 90s for much of the outing and he needed just 73 pitches to record 12 outs. He is allowing just 5.65 hits per nine innings this season to rank 20th nationally and is striking out 12.24 batters per nine innings, good for 15th in the nation. McClanahan tossed a seven-inning complete game in the opener of a March 18 double-header vs. Harvard. He fanned a career-best 11 batters and did not allow a walk.

JOEY BATS Sophomore Joe Genord had a slow start to the season, but has elevated his play tremendously of late. Hitting under .100 at one point earlier in the year, the first baseman is now batting .285 and has hit .292 over the last 10 games. Genord leads the Bulls with seven homeruns, clubbed a pair of two-run jacks over the weekend series at Tulane, and hit a walk-off bomb on March 12 against Valpo. It was the first walk-off blast for USF since Buddy Putnam did so on March 29, 2015.

HOT COCO Sophomore second basman Coco Montes is having a strong second campaign, as he is hitting .302. He has eight doubles and four homeruns, already a career high. He has scored 29 times and driven in 18 men. The Miami native was riding a 15-game hitting streak earlier in the year. He produced a career-high four hits against UCF on April 8.

ACCO-LADEN The Bulls as a whole have been recognized for their efforts this season, primarily in the American Athletic Conference. But Kevin Merrell has been acknowledged on a more national stage . Merrell was rated the fifth-best shortstop in the nation according to D1Baseball on March 23 and was named to the Perfect Game Mid-Season All-America First Team on April 6. He came in at No. 49 on D1Baseball's Top 100 Prospect list on April 12 and was also named to USA Baseball's Golden Spikes Midseason Watch List on the same day.

LEAD-OFF BLAST Kevin Merrell has five dingers on the season and has hit a lead-off homer three times this year. He did so in game two of a March 18 double-header vs. Harvard with a bomb to right field, becoming the first Bull to lead off a contest with a long ball since March 30, 2010. He repeated the feat on April 9 against UCF and on April 16 vs. Cincy.

LIGHTS, CAMERON, ACTION Sophomore Cam Montgomery has appeared in 23 games this season and has made 13 starts. Though he has just 55 at bats this season with 11 hits, he has come up in key situations for the Bulls over his last three appearances off the bench. He has either scored a run or driven in a run in each appearance. Montgomery pinch hit against UCF on April 7, picked up a single and a RBI before scoring the game-winning run. He then pinch ran on April 8 and also scored the game-winning run. At Stetson on April 11, Montgomery pinch hit in the eighth with the Bulls trailing, 6-3, and laced a two-run double into right center. The sophomore is hitting .324 over the last 10 games.

DAVID IS GOLIATH Sophomore third baseman David Villar was on fire in the series against Harvard from March 17-19. He hit .636 (7-for-11) with seven runs scored and 12 RBI. Villar clubbed three homers over the four-game sweep of the Crimson, including a grand slam in the series finale. It was the first grand slam for the Bulls since Luke Borders hit one on April 14, 2015. He is hitting .299 on the year with 27 runs scored and 41 RBI.

SWEEEEEEP EMOTION The Bulls swept their intrastate rivals UCF over the weekend, marking the first series sweep of three games against an AAC opponent since March 27-29 of the 2015 season (Cincy). It was also the first time that USF had swept UCF in back-to-back games in Tampa since 1993 and just the third series sweep of at least three games in the history of the competitive series. The last time USF swept the Knights was back in 1985 when it took four-straight games in Tampa.

KNOCKING OFF THE NOLES For the first time since 1989, the Bulls defeated Florida State with the Feb. 21 4-2 victory. It marked just the 17th win in program history against FSU and it also ended a 15-game losing streak. The Bulls defeated the Noles twice back in 1989 and have now beaten FSU five times in Tallahassee. It marked USF's first victory over a top-five opponent since beating then No. 2 Florida on April 24, 2012 by a score of 5-3, a game which was also played on the road.

YOUNG GUNS The Bulls received stellar performances from new faces in the victory over FSU, particularly three freshmen pitchers. The trio of Noah Yager, Carson Ragsdale and Collin Sullivan were thrown into the fire and responded with 4.0 perfect innings againast one of the more potent offenses in the nation. The three did not allow a baserunner and each struck out two batters.

Games 45-47 eCU 2017 UsF BaseBall Game Notes6

NOTESONE AND DONE Along with the three freshmen hurlers, the Bulls used a total of six arms in the statement win over FSU. The collection of tossers also included starter Ryan Valdes (3.0 IP, 1 H, 2 ER, 1 SO), senior Mark Savarese (1.0 IP, 0 H) and sophomore Andrew Perez (1.0 IP, 0 H, 2 SO). The USF staff combined to throw a one-hitter, the first since March 27 of last year. PRE-EMPTIVE The Bulls were projected to finish sixth in the preseason coaches' poll in the American Athletic Conference. It marked the second-straight season that USF was picked to finish sixth in the conference.

WELCOME TO THE HERD The Bulls have 12 newcomers this season, 10 of which are freshmen. USF returns just one starting pitcher from 2016, right-hander Phoenix Sanders. The senior was the Bulls' Friday night starter throughout the 2016 year.

NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK The Bulls have added 12 new players to the roster this season, including nine freshmen. The dozen new Bulls account for just 35 percent of the team’s roster this season, down from 62 percent last year.

L/L WELCOME ON BACK The Bulls return their entire coaching staff from the 2016 season, including head coach Mark Kingston, assistant coaches Mike Current, Billy Mohl, and Chris Cates. This is the third consecutive season where there have been no changes to the coaching staff of the USF baseball program.

500-500 The USF baseball pitching staff has recorded 500 or more strikeouts in back-to-back seasons for the first time in program history. The team’s 517 strikeouts in 2016 were the second most, trailing just the 546 strikeouts the Bulls accomplished in the 1995 season. USF has only achieved 500 or more strikeouts four times in the program’s 51 year history.

KEEPING IT LOCAL The USF baseball team boasts 34 players this season, 32 of which are from the state of Florida. Over the past two years, 66 of the 68 roster spots have been filled with Florida natives.

BAY AREA BOYS The Bulls are proud to call the Bay Area their home and the majority of the baseball team hails from the surrounding area (within 30 minutes of the USF campus or Tampa Bay). Eight Bulls are from Hillsborough County (Garrett Bye, Nick Cerelli, Chris Chatfield, Michael Farley, Anthony Gonnella, Andres Leal, Jordan Santos, Ryan Valdes), two are from Polk County (Levi Borders, Luke Borders) and Pasco County (Kevin Merrell, Carson Ragsdale) and one from Sarasota County (Joe Cavallaro). The team has no representation from Pinellas County this year.

TAMPA ROOTS The Bulls have four players that call Tampa home (Nick Cerelli, Andres Leal, Jordan Santos, and Ryan Valdes).

PLAYER OF THE YEAR Sophomore catcher/first baseman Joe Genord was named the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League Player of the Year in 2016 (.296, seven HR, league record 45 RBIs).

KEVIN MERRELL KUDOS Shortstop Kevin Merrell was named preseason all-conference by the American Athletic Conference this season. The junior from Odessa, Fla. has led USF in batting average each of the last two seasons (.346 in 2015, .320 in 2016). Merrell also posted a team-high .418 on-base percentage in 2016 and his 16 stolen bases ranked eighth in The American.

FRESHMEN TO SOPHOMORES USF’s top 10 national signing class, which debuted in 2016, gained a lot of experience last season. A year ago, the Bulls found themselves fielding seven freshmen in the lineup at times. Freshman outfielder Chris Chatfield (Riverview, Fla.) led the team in home runs (seven) as freshman catcher Joe Genord (Lake Worth, Fla.) was named the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League Player of the Year. This season, those freshmen have progressed into sophomores and look to build upon their inaugural collegiate debuts with another step forward in 2017.

WAR ON I-4 USF and the University of Central Florida announced the official recognition of the “War On I-4” rivalry series in September. The Green & Gold and the Black & Gold will compete for year-long bragging rights with the winners in each of 14 sports scoring toward a final tally for each program. The winning university of the football match-up will take possession of a large trophy shaped like the iconic I-4 road sign, which will be displayed on their campus for the following year. There will also be a similar plaque bestowed to the overall winning school each year.USF and UCF will score head-to-head in 14 sports programs represented at both universities. Nine of those programs will compete head-to-head during the regular season. The programs that don’t compete directly against each other will determine a winner based on the best overall conference post-season performance of each team.

Winning teams can accrue up to six points toward the overall yearlong, school total. The performances of both athletic programs in the annual NCAA Graduation Success Rate will be used as a tie-breaker, if necessary.

Total points will be tallied and announced throughout the year with progress available for viewing on the “War on I-4” website (www.War-On-I4.com). The overall winning school will be presented the “War On I-4” trophy following completion of the last scored competition in the spring semester. The score is currently 24-15 UCF. The two teams will meet

again on March 2 at USF. For more information on the rivalry, please visit: War-on-I4.com .

BULLS ON NATIONAL TV The May 20 game at UCF will air to a national audience on CBS Sports Network. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. in Orlando, Fla.
