Blumler & Katz (1974) Two researchers attempted to discover what it is about
different media outlets which make them successful and popular. They came up with 5points which they believed any media product needs to give an audience.
Education/Information: Keep up to date with what’s happening in the world. Learn about things we do not know and to keep informed. A high percentage in tabloids are about sport, showbiz and celebrities.
Entertainment: Stories in papers can be funny, and often about things that interest us i.e: horoscopes, cartoons, crosswords and puzzles which are for entertainment.
Social Interaction: We talk to people about what’s happened in papers, showing them stories ‘HAVE YOU SEEN THIS?’ If we know what’s happening in the world we can join in conversation & discussion.
Escape: While reading about other people & events we’re taken out of our day to day concerns for a while so they provide an escape like TV.
Identification: When we read about other people and what’s happening. We often put ourselves in their place and imagine what it’s like to have the same thing happen to us. This makes us more involved and interested in a story.
Information as to what is happening within the area and keep up to date with information that we may
have not heard about previously from other
newspapers making the story exclusive
Social Interaction: we will talk about this story to others and show them to giving it that shocking
factor also its informative because it
provides us with information that is
happening within our area to learn about
things we did not know at the time.
Entertainment: Events that are taking place that
may interest us also giving us information keeping us up to date
about when the festival is taking place so it gives a chance for the audience to be informed, soon the audience start to rely on
the newspaper to feed the information about
different events that are occurring making the newspaper appealing.
Social Interaction: Causes us to talk about the story especially if we have an
interest in music, in relation it proves us with entertainment because music is something that
may interest the audience urging the audience to
read.
Escape: We’re reading about people and events so we’re taken out of our day to day
lives for a while and in relation introducing
identification when we are putting ourselves in the
shoes of others
Information about the elections and campaigners, keeping the audience up to
date with the latest information that is currently occurring making it reliable
source to consume information
Social: We will talk to other members of the target
audience about elections this enables us to join in
conversations and discussions
Social: It’s our borough so there would be some
discussion/conversations within our
area.
Information: up to date with
what’s happening as well as being education about something that
we are yet still to read until we are
given this newspaper giving
it that more exclusive touch, this makes the
newspaper more attractive for it’s demographic and
also builds up excitement for the audience
itself as well as using this
newspaper as a reliable source to consume various information about different stories
that are occurring within the area at the
moment.
Identification: We try to jump into their shoes and
putting ourselves at risk like those in the stories. This gives audience a sense of parcitpation also makes it easier for the audience to interpret the information
that is given and also makes the story more exciting
Social interaction: A story to talk
about with our fellow peers to
let them know to and to get their opinions. Also

provided that interest us in this case those who
interested in politics. Also giving
us information about what is
happening which we don’t know

Information: About what happened within our area and being educated about different
events that are happening within the area in this case

Information: we are up to date with the latest stories
happening around the area and educated about a story which
we are not aware of in this case the leaders blog spells out
hope. Also social interaction, something we can talk about.
Escape: reading about people & events, takes us
away from day to day lives and
having the opportunity to be informed about events that are occurring so it
educates its audience and
makes the audience want to read on
and come back to consume more
information
Information: we are informed what is
happening so therefore the
website is educating us about something
that has recently occurred so as well as giving us up to
date news it is also giving us crucial
information about the local area and in this case we can use it as a warning for
the local community to stay safe.
Social interaction: we would talk about this story to let others now what’s happened and it also gives it that ‘wow’ shocking factors, making the audience
react is a huge sign showing that they are fully engaged within the newspaper/website.
Identification: We put ourselves in his shoes and
relate which is a distressing thing

nevertheless makes the
audience feel the need to participate
and makes it attractive.
Information: We are informed
about other stories within the area,
giving us the opportunity to
react to them and to let our opinions
know so it also gives us a chance to interact with
other people about the stories that
have been added to the website

an opportunity to talk about various amount of stories/issues that have been exposed within the
