IntroductionCongratulations for the purchase of TMS ScanControl.

TMS ScanControl is the system control software for Leica HDS, Z+F Imager and AmbergProfiler 5003 scanners. It is required for data acquisition in the field.

1. Supported instrumentsTMS ScanControl supports the following measuring devices:

• Leica HDS6000/6100/7000 (min. firmware version 7.5)

• Z+F Imager 5006/5010 (min. firmware version 7.5)

• Amberg Profiler 5003 (min. firmware version 7.5)

• FARO Focus 3D

Note

Since program version 1.9.8.1, controlling Leica HDS4500 is no longer supported. Toaquire scans with ScanControl and HDS4500, you may use a program version up to1.9.6.10 on your field computer. However, positioning and processing of scans fromHDS4500 is fully supported also in version 1.9.8.1 and above.

Note

Before shipment the Panasonic CF notebook is configured to optimize the data collectionwith scanner device. Do not install other software on the notebook or change notebooksettings.

3.2. Software installation3.2.1. Latest software releaseTMS ScanControl is a module within TMSOffice. You may download the latest software releaseof TMS Office on our home page http://www.amberg.ch/at

3.2.2. InstallationThe installation of TMS ScanControl is included in the installation of TMS Office. A separatestart icon will be created on the desktop to have a quick entry into the measuring interface.The TMS Office program is supplied in a compressed form and can be used only after it hasbeen installed on the hard-disk.

The procedure is as follows:

1. Insert the CD-ROM

2. A menu is automatically loaded and displayed. Select from here "Install TMS Office".

3. If the menu is not loaded automatically, double-click on the file Autorun.exe on the CD-ROM.

4. If you have downloaded the program from the Internet, unzip the file to an empty directoryand double-click on the file Setup.exe.

5. Follow the instructions during the installation.

When you have a full license of the software, you must additionally install the dongle and thedrivers for the dongle.

3.2.3. De-InstallationUse the function "De-Installation" to remove the software from your operating system.

Please note, only files that are unmodified, can be un-installed. Therefore demo data files willnot be un-installed automatically. You will need to delete themmanually (e.g. with MS Explorer).

Chapter 1. Introduction to TMSScanControlTMS ScanControl contains the functions for successful data acquisition with the systems LeicaHDS, Z+F Imager, Amberg Profiler 5003 and FARO Focus 3D.

The software is optimized for field work. All important functions for the measurements can beexecuted by specific icons on the touch screen. Within TMS ScanControl the measuring pro-cedure follows the concept of the Amberg Positioning Method (APM).

1.1. User InterfaceFigure 1.1. User Interface

The screen view is made up of different sections:

• Status information

• Operation buttons

• Output window

1.2. Status informationCurrent status is shown. Follow the instructions on the screen to make sure that the positioningprocedure is done correctly.

Note

To change the view in the window press CTRL+A. This will provide information requiredduring trouble shooting and to check release numbers of the software and firmware.

Chapter 2.Workingwith Leica HDS, Z+FImager or Amberg Profiler2.1. Start-up procedureTo start a measurement follow the steps below:

• Setup the scanner system on the tripod and connect all cables.

• Level the scanner by using the tribrach.

• Setup the sphere prism in a distance of approximately 10m (depending on the scan resolu-tion).

• Check that the cables are not tangled up.

• Start the notebook.

• Start TMS ScanControl by double-clicking on the corresponding desktop icon.

• The software will automatically communicate with the scanner. If the scanner was not re-cognized, check the network connection between the notebook and the scanner.

• Select one of the available scanning resolutions.

• Set a new scanner position.

• Set face one position and measure the prism on top of the scanner.

• Start the scanner. While scanning measure the sphere prism with the total station.

• Set face two position and measure the prism on top of the scanner.

• Finish scan.

• Close image after a quick check.

2.2. Data transmissionIn order to be able to use the Leica HDS, Z+F Imager or Amberg Profiler 5003, the connectionhas to be set. Choose File » Options » Scanner... in TMS Office. The dialogue below will beopened. In TMS ScanControl you can only reach this dialogue, if the Scanner Measurementwindow is closed. So if you start TMS ScanControl and you haven't already done the settingin TMS Office, you must first close the Scanner Measurement window and then open thedialogue.

Activate the option Use and input the IP-address of the scanner. This IP-address you can findon the display of the Leica HDS, Z+F Imager or Amberg Profiler 5003 after the start-up of thesystem.

2.3. Prism on ScannerIn order to be able to use the Amberg Positioning Method for the positioning of the scanner, aprism is needed on top of the scanner. There is a certain prism adapter that can be mountedon the housing of the scanner. Take care that the prism is mounted on the side where thedisplay is installed. This is important for the determination of the orientation of the system.

2.4. Setup dialogPress the following button or choose ScanControl » Setup to open the setup dialog.

Scanner Setup

Choose one of the resolutions for your scans from the dropdown menu. Depending on thescanner you will have different options. Only calibrated configurations are shown.

Note

Recommended setting: Middle (50Hz and 5'000 pixels per rotation). One scan shouldtake less than one minute and you will get a resolution of about 12mm at a distance of10m.

Scans directory

Choose the directory where the data should be stored.

Note

You should always store the scan data in a different partition to where programs areinstalled.

Operator

Type in the name of the operator.

2.5. Measuring functionsThe following sections explain the procedure of the data acquisition with the Amberg PositioningMethod (APM).

The distance between the scanner and the prism bowl depends on the range you want to usethe data. It is recommended that you do not use data which is further away than the prismbowl. The setup order scanner, sphere prism and total station is the easiest way to take themeasurement. Otherwise it might be that you have to turn the sphere prism for the total stationmeasurement.

2.5.1. New StationPress the following button to set a new scanner position.

Use this dialog to input the name of the next scanner station.

Note

It is very important that the point numbering on the total station corresponds with thestation numbers.

2.5.1.1. Point numbering conceptThe point numbering for the total station measurements is the following:

• First prism measurement (Face I): StationNo + "1" at the end.

• Second prism measurement (Face II): StationNo + "2" at the end.

• Sphere prism measurement: StationNo + "3" at the end.

2.5.2. Set Face IPress the following button to set face I angle.

The software will read out the current scan position (horizontal angle encoder value). Thisangle will later be used to turn the scanner to the position of face II. After you have pressedthis button measure the prism on top of the scanner with the total station.

Note

Do not turn the scanner between pressing this button and measuring the prism with thetotal station.

2.5.3. Start measurementPress the following button to start the measurement.

After you pressed this button the scanner will turn back a little bit and start the measurement.The measurement is taken with the settings done in the ScanControl Setup dialog. The scanmay take some minutes depending on the set scan parameters. Make sure that nobody is

passing the scanned area during the measurement. Otherwise you have to use the "Stop"button to stop the measurement (see Stop measurement).

During the scanning measure the sphere prism with the total station.

2.5.4. Stop measurementPress the following button if you want to stop the scan.

Note

If you stop a scan it will not be possible to continue the scan. You have to start the pro-cedure again by using a new station number to avoid mismatch during the positioningprocedure.

2.5.5. Set Face IIPress the following button to turn the scanner to the face II position.

This function will turn the scanner exactly on the face II position. The face II position is exactly180 degrees different from face I position.

Note

Do not measure the prism with the total station before pressing this button. This mayresult in inaccurate orientation calculation later in TMS Office.

2.5.6. Finish measurementPress the following button to finish the measurement and open the scan image.

After recording some scan it could make sense to check what has been recorded.

Open a list of all scan stations within the current storage directory by using the functionScanControl » Open measured data... . Choose one of the scans and press OK to open theimage data in a separate window.

Chapter 3. Working with FARO Focus3DSince program version 1.9.6.0 TMS ScanControl supports measuring with FARO Focus 3Dscanner. This chapter describes how to use TMS ScanControl in combination with the FAROFocus 3D scanner.

3.1. Start-up procedureTo start a measurement follow the steps below:

• Setup the scanner system roughly leveled (+/- 5 degrees) on the tripod.

• Make sure that the prisms attached to the tribrach adapter are well visible from the totalstation.

• Start-up the scanner.

• Check the scanner parameters or select a profile that contains the recommended settings(see Section 3.3, “Recommended scan parameters” on page 20).

• Setup the sphere prism in a distance of approximately 10m (depending on the scan resolu-tion).

• Connect the scanner and the notebook with the network cable.

• Start the notebook.

• Start TMS ScanControl by double-clicking on the corresponding desktop icon.

• The software will automatically communicate with the scanner:

• If the scanner was not recognized check the network connection between the notebookand the scanner.

• When the scanner is recognized, the scanner display will show a message that it iscurrently controlled by an external software.

• Set the resolution parameter in the settings dialog. All other parameters will be read fromthe active profile on the scanner.

• Set a new scanner position.

• Start the scan.

• While scanning measure the two prisms attached to the scanner adapter and the sphereprism with the total station. Make sure you follow the point numbering convention correctly.

• Finish scan.

• Close image after a quick check.

3.2. Data transmissionTMS ScanControl and the FARO Focus 3D scanner communicate through LAN connectionwith static IP addresses.

Note

The scanner IP address and subnet mask are printed on a sticker on the scanner. Thestatic IP address for the notebook must be in the same subnet as the scanner.

3.2.1. Setting a static IP address in Windows net-work settingsOpen the Windows Network connections window, from the Control panel. Right-click onLocal area network and select Properties from the context menu to access the Local areaconnection properties.

In the Local area connection properties window select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and clickProperties. The Internet protocol properties window appears.

Select Use the following IP address radio button and enter the static IP address and subnetmask. The static IP address must be in the same subnet as the scanner. The subnet maskmust be entered as it is written on the scanner.

Note

The static IP address of the notebook must be in the same subnet as the scanner IPaddress. The useable IP addresses depend on the subnet mask.

A typical example:

• Subnet mask on scanner 255.255.254.0 (printed on the scanner)

• IP address on scanner: 172.17.15.117 (printed on the scanner)

• IP address on notebook: 172.17.15.116

Click the OK button in the open windows to apply the changes.

3.2.2. Setting the scanner IP in TMS ScanControlTo set the scanner IP address in TMS ScanControl, choose File » Options » Scanner... inTMS Office. The dialogue below will be opened. In TMS ScanControl you can only reach thisdialogue, if the Scanner Measurement window is closed. So if you start TMS ScanControland you haven't already done the setting in TMS Office, you must first close the ScannerMeasurement window and then open the dialogue.

Activate the option Use and input the IP address of the FARO Focus 3D as it is written on thesticker on the scanner hardware. A hardlock with a valid TMS licence attached to the notebookis needed to change the scanner settings.

3.3. Recommended scan parametersAll scan parameters apart from the resolution are determined by the active profile in the FAROscanner software. The following parameter values are recommended when working with TMSScanControl:

• Qualtiy: 2x (higher quality will slow down the scanning process)

• Horizontal area: 0° to 360° (full extent)

• Vertical area: 0° to 65° (full extent)

• Scan with color: Off

• Clear contour (advanced settings): On

• Clear sky (advanced settings): On

You can set these parameters on the FARO Scan Parameters page or define a profile in theFARO scanner software for measuring with TMS ScanControl.

Note

The parameters above can not be changed while TMS ScanControl is connected to thescanner. To edit the parameters, you need to close TMS ScanControl first. After restartof the program, the edited parameters will be used for the next scan.

The operator name can be set in the FARO scanner software.

3.4. Prisms on scannerIn order to be able to use the Amberg Positioning Method for the positioning of the scanner,two prism are needed on the tribrach adapter. Prisms are mounted on prism adapter bolts, oneeach on the display side and battery side of the scanner. In scanning setup, the prisms mustface roughly the total station so that they can be measured. The prism measurements are im-portant for the determination of the orientation of the system.

3.5. Setup dialogPress the following button or choose ScanControl » Setup to open the setup dialog.

Scanner Setup

Choose the resolution of the scan.

Note

Recommended resolution settings: 1/8 will result in a resolution of approximately 10mmin a distance of 10m. Note that all other scan parameters (quality, clear contour filter,clear sky filter, operator name) are read from the currently active profile on scanner (seeabove).

Scans directory

Choose the directory where the data should be stored.

Note

You should always store the scan data in a different partition to where programs areinstalled.

3.6. Measuring functionsThe following sections explain the procedure of the data acquisition with the FARO Focus 3Dwith the Amberg Positioning Method (APM).

3.6.2. Start measurementPress the following button to start the measurement.

After recording a scan it can make sense to check what has been recorded.

Open a list of all scan stations within the current storage directory by using the functionScanControl » Open measured data... . Choose one of the scans and press OK to open theimage data in a separate window.

Chapter 4. Important hints4.1. Notebook / data storageThe notebook must have a separated partition where the scan data is stored. Do not run anyother software from this partition. After copying the data to another notebook or network, deletethe data on the measuring computer and defragment the partition where the scan data wasstored. Do not run other software during the data acquisition (especially virus scan softwarecan have a deep impact on the performance of the notebook).

It is higly recommended to backup the scan data after measuring.

4.2. Data handlingUse different directories for different sections of the tunnel. Use unique station number withinone measuring session to avoid mismatch during the positioning in the Office.

4.3. Laser security switch offThe scanner has an automatic switch off mode for the laser. If something is closer than approx-imately 0.30 meter (for Leica HDS, Z+F Imager or Amberg Profiler 5003) the laser will switchoff automatically. A message is shown on the screen whenever the laser is switched off duringa measurement. Check the data at the end of each measurement. If there are black areas inthe image the laser has been switched off during the measurement. If the data is not acceptablerepeat the measurement once again.
