This User’s guide describes the operation of theBeoSound Ouverture music system. Each functiondescribed in this guide is accompanied by a set ofbuttons which will guide you through theoperation step-by-step.
The BeoSound Ouverture may be used withvarious types of active Bang & Olufsenloudspeakers, or it may be used as a music centrein a Bang & Olufsen AV system. This guide appliesto both situations.
Note: Complete setting-up and maintenanceinstructions are found in the Setting-up guide,which is also enclosed with the BeoSoundOuverture.
Be sure to keep the Setting-up guide. You willneed it for cleaning and maintenance instructions,and when you move or rearrange your BeoSoundOuverture setup in the future.

Your BeoSound Ouverture musicsystem is versatile, mobile... andresponsive!
You can move the whole systemaround at will and place it whereveryou like – on the wall in a speciallydesigned bracket, on a table, or on thespecially designed stand.
But no matter where you place yourBeoSound Ouverture, it will alwaysrespond to a wave of your hand.
As soon as you reach out to touch theoperation panel, the glass doors openautomatically, revealing the musicsystem concealed behind the screen.

The top section holds the tray forcompact discs. The disc is kept inplace by a clamp, which can beraised or lowered by pressing theLOAD button (top right-handbutton). Discs must always be loadedwith the text side facing you!
The middle-section contains thedisplay and the buttons foroperating the system.

The BeoSound Ouverture radio onlybecomes visible when it is being used.The display then lights up with radioprogram information.
The bottom section is for tapecassettes. Cassettes must be loadedwith the tape slot pointingdownwards!

The step (� �) and wind (ss tt) buttons let youstep or wind through radio programs and tracks.

The display can give you threedifferent types of information aboutthe radio program you are listening to:
• Program name*• Program number• Radio frequency
To switch from one display to theother, you must press the DISPLAYbutton repeatedly while the radio isplaying.
Your chosen display indication for theradio will be maintained until youselect another via the DISPLAY button.

*Nice to know about RDS...The program name function requires that yourradio is equipped with the RDS facility.
RDS is not a standard feature in all BeoSoundOuverture radios. Please contact your Bang &Olufsen dealer for further information.
The RDS facility enables you to give a short nameof your own choice to your radio programs. If youhaven’t named a program yourself, the station’sown name may appear instead, provided such aname is being transmitted by the station.
In this way, the RDS facility enables you toremember a station not only by its programnumber, but also by a particular name.

Playing your radio programs
To turn on the radio simply press theRADIO button. The program you werelast listening to starts playing, and youwill see the indication RADIO followedby a program number in the display.
If you have given a name to the radioprogram, or if the radio station you arelistening to transmits a name of itsown, the display may read out thatname instead*.
To switch to another program you caneither use the step buttons � or �, oryou can key in the exact programnumber you want, using the numberbuttons.

Presetting radio stations
To be able to use the radio asdescribed on the previous page, youmust first tune in to your favouriteradio stations and store them onprogram numbers of their own.
You can store up to 30 radio stationsand, if your radio is equipped with theRDS facility, you will even be able togive a short name of your own choiceto each program.
The TUNE button gives access topresetting radio stations. When youhave pressed TUNE, presetting a radiostation is like having a conversationwith the BeoSound Ouverture display:
The display prompts you to dosomething; then press � or � to revealother options. Pressing the PLAYbutton accepts any information that iscurrently shown in the display.
All in all, the tuning procedure takesyou through five stages...
1. First you must select the band in which youwant to tune – FM or AM.
2. Then you can make the radio search for astation by pressing � or �. Searching stops atthe first station producing an acceptablesignal. If this is not the station you want, justpress � or � again to continue searching.
3. When you have found a station, you must storeit on a program number of its own. The displayautomatically offers you a vacant programnumber, but you may select another if you like.If the number in the display is blinking, it is toindicate that the station you have found hasalready been stored once – and on thatprogram number.
4. Then, if you like, you can give a short name ofyour own choice (8 characters) to your newradio program*; or you can skip the namingfunction by pressing PLAY – in that case, youwill see the name transmitted by the radiostation (if any) instead when you play the radioprogram*.
5. Finally, you must store your new radio programalong with all the information you have keyedin with it.
* Note: This function is only available if your radiois equipped with the RDS facility. Please refer topage 10 for further information.

Fine tuning a radio station
If the sound from a radio station is notcoming through clearly, it may bebecause the station needs fine tuning.
The fine tuning function enables youto move slowly through thefrequencies, or to detune a stationslightly because of noisy reception.
To do so, just follow the instructions tothe left, and listen carefully as youproceed...
Mono/stereo reception
The current setting is indicated in the display –stereo or mono sound.
If you have tuned in to an FM stationbroadcasting a stereo signal, this signalwill be stored along with the radioprogram.
The system automatically switches tomono if the stereo signal is not strongenough to produce an acceptablesound.
However, you can overrule thisautomatic function if you wish, andselect mono or stereo manually. Seehow to the left on this page...

Pressing the LOAD button raises theclamp which hold the CD in place. Youcan then remove any CD from thecompartment and load the one youwant to play. Always load the CD withthe text side facing you!
Pressing LOAD again lowers the clamp.You may also press the CD button tolower the clamp and start playing theCD at once.

Playing the CD
When you press the CD button to startplaying, all information on the CD – forexample the total number of tracks –will first be registered. Then the CDstarts playing from the beginning.
While the CD is playing, you can stepthrough the tracks by pressing the stepbuttons � or �; or you can key in theexact track number you want to hear,using the number buttons.
By pressing tt or ss you can searchfor a specific passage on a CD (forwardor backwards) – just as if you werewinding through an audio tape.
Searching continues for as long as youkeep your finger on the button – at alow speed to begin with and, after 3seconds, at a high speed. When you liftyour finger off the button, the CDresumes playing – or pausing, if it waspaused when you started.
By means of the PAUSE and PLAYbuttons you can pause and resumeplayback any time.
When the CD has been played throughonce, the CD player stops – waiting foranother instruction to play.
If you select another source, the CDplayer switches off automatically. Toswitch off the entire system, press thestand-by button •.
Note: If the CD player is left paused or stopped formore than 30 minutes, the system automaticallyswitches to stand-by.

Playing tracks in random order
Playing the CD over and over again
The random play function enables youto play all the tracks on a CD in randomorder. To do so, you must press theRANDOM button.
Whenever you press RANDOM, thedisplay shows the current setting. Then,to change from one to the other, justpress RANDOM again.
When all the tracks on the CD havebeen played through once – in randomorder, the CD player stops, waiting foranother instruction to play.
The CD-repeat function makes the CDplayer play the CD over and over againfor up to 12 hours. The REPEAT buttongives access to this function.
Whenever you press REPEAT, thedisplay shows the current setting. Then,to change from one to the other, justpress REPEAT again.
After 12 hours of uninterruptedplaying, the system automaticallyswitches to stand-by.
Note: The CD-repeat function remains on for 12hours; until you change it via the REPEAT button;or until you switch the system to stand-by.

Programming a sequence of tracks
You can program the CD player eitherto play specific tracks on the CD youhave loaded, or to leave out certaintracks.
To do so, you must start playing theCD. If you don’t want playing tocontinue while you program the tracksequence, press PAUSE.
You can then either select the tracksyou want in the sequence, using theSELECT button; or you can reject thetracks you want to leave out, using theREJECT button. The display will guideyou through the programming.
Pressing PLAY (or CD) makes the CDplayer start playing your programmedsequence of tracks – in numericalorder.
The CD player memorizes the tracksequence until you unload the CD. Butyou may also clear (cancel) thesequence yourself by pressing REJECTfor two seconds (while the CD isplaying).
Note: By pressing the step buttons � or �, youcan step through the tracks in the sequence asyou like.
Whenever you press the SELECT or the REJECTbutton, the display prompts you to key in a tracknumber.
The display then writes SELECTED (included) orREJECTED (excluded) indicating that the CD playernow memorizes the track number. Then pressSELECT or REJECT again to key in the next tracknumber you want (or don’t want) in yoursequence of tracks.

The tape cassette must be loaded withthe tape slot facing downwards – andwith the A-side out.
Insert the top section first, then push inthe bottom half of the cassette until itis properly seated in the compartment.
The display can give you two differenttypes of information about where youare on a tape:
• Track number• Counter position
To switch from one display to theother, you must press the DISPLAYbutton while the tape is playing.
Your chosen display indication for thetape recorder will be maintained untilyou select another via the DISPLAYbutton.
Note: The tape recorder only recognizes tracks ifthere is a pause (or blank) of at least 3 secondsbetween them.
Note: When you first load a tape, the taperecorder does not know how many tracks itcontains, or which track is currently playing, andthere will be no indication of track number in thedisplay.

To unload the tape, grip the sides of thecassette – a little below the middle –and gently but firmly pull it outwards.
Note: The tape recorder adjusts automatically tothe type of tape you are using: ferro, chrome ormetal.

Only when you ask for a specific track, will thetape recorder start registering track numbers: Thetape is rewound to the beginning and then for-warded until the tape recorder finds your chosentrack number.
When the tape has been played through once, thetape recorder knows exactly how many tracks itcontains. When you ask for a specific number, ittherefore immediately starts winding until it findsyour chosen track.
Note: Likewise, the counter indication will alwaysstart at 0000 when you load a tape, even if it ishalfway through. Therefore, if you want thecorrect counter indication, you must rewind thetape to the beginning before you start playing orrecording.

Playing the tape
Pressing the TAPE button starts thetape recorder. If you press TAPE then 1,the tape will be rewound to thebeginning to start playing from thefirst track.
The tape recorder automaticallyreverses the tape at the end of the firstside and, within one second, resumesplaying. If you want to “turn” the tapeto play the other side, just press TURN.
While the tape recorder is playing, youcan step through the tracks on the tapeby pressing the step buttons � or �; oryou can key in the exact track numberyou want to hear, using the numberbuttons.
You can also rewind or fast forwardthe tape to a specific position. To doso, press ss or tt. When the tapereaches the point you want, just pressPAUSE to pause the tape recorder, orpress PLAY to resume playback.
PAUSE and PLAY can also be usedduring playback to pause and resumeplaying the tape at any point you like.
When the tape has been playedthrough once, the tape recorder willpause, waiting for another instructionto play.
If you select another source, the taperecorder switches off automatically. Toswitch off the entire system, press thestand-by button •.
Note: If the tape recorder is left paused for morethan 30 minutes, the system switches to stand-by.

Instant recording on tape
The buttons you will use for recordingare the three buttons with green text:RECORD, PAUSE, and RETURN.
Whenever the BeoSound Ouverture isplaying, you can start recording directlyon the tape in the tape recorder – justpress the RECORD button twice.
When you press RECORD the first time,the tape recorder gets ready forrecording. The display indicates thatthe system is ready by, alternately,displaying RECORD and the source youare listening to.
Press the RECORD button again, andrecording starts immediately.
You can pause your recording any timeby pressing the green PAUSE button.The tape recorder automatically insertsa pause of 4 seconds on the tape.
Then press RECORD again to resumerecording; or press another sourcebutton, for example RADIO, to stoprecording and switch off the taperecorder.
If you press the RETURN button duringrecording or while the recording ispaused, the tape recorder will rewindthe tape to the spot where yourrecording started – that is to the spotwhere you last pressed RECORD.
You can then play back what you havejust recorded (press TAPE), or if youregret your recording, just pressRECORD again to record somethingelse.
Nice to know...• Before you start recording, don’t forget to set
the Dolby NR function and the automatic tapereverse function as you prefer. See page 26.
• The recording level is adjusted automatically,which ensures that your tapes will not beoverloaded.
• The four-second pauses between yourrecordings are important for the tape recorderto be able to register the tracks on a tapeduring playback.
• When the source for your recording stops (e.g.the CD player), the tape recorder pauses as well– quite automatically.
• If the tape runs out, the tape recorder leavesthe recording mode and the source for yourrecording stops simultaneously. If no furtherinstructions are received, the system auto-matically switches to stand-by after 30 minutes.

Recording specific CD tracks
The system also allows you to startrecording from a specific track on a CD.
If you press RECORD while a CD isplaying, the CD player pauses. You canthen key in the track number fromwhich you want the recording to start.
Then, when you press RECORD again,the tape recorder starts recording andthe CD player starts playing from thebeginning of the track you havechosen.
At the end of the track, or later if youlike, press the green PAUSE button topause the recording.
Then press, for example, the CD buttonto switch off the tape recorder andreturn to just listening to the CD.

The BeoSound Ouverture is equippedwith the Dolby B NR system. From thefactory, the noise reduction system iscut in.
If you wish to change this setting, youmay do so by pressing the NR button.The display then shows the currentsetting. Press NR again to change fromON to OFF, or vice versa.
Note: The Dolby NR system reduces the back-ground noise on your tapes. If a tape is recordedwith the Dolby NR system cut in, the tape mustalso be played back with the Dolby NR system cutin.
The tape recorder always plays throughthe entire tape (A and B side) beforestopping – that is, you don’t have toturn the tape manually.
You can of course cancel the automatictape reverse function if you like, sothat only the current side will beplayed (or recorded on).
To do so, you must press the AUT REVbutton. The display then shows thecurrent setting. Press AUT REV again tochange from ON to OFF, or vice versa.

You can program the system to startrecording, to start playing, or to switchoff quite automatically – without youhaving to be there to control theprocess:
• The Timer Record function enablesyou to program the system to startand stop recording a radio program.
• The Timer Play function can, forexample, be used to wake you up inthe morning to the sound from eitheryour favourite radio program, CD ortape.
• The Timer Stand-by function enablesyou to program the system to switchoff automatically – for example afteryou leave for work in the morning.
The BeoSound Ouverture memorizesup to 11 such programmings at a time.
Once you have pressed the PROGRAMbutton to get started, programming anew Timer is just like having aconversation with the display...
Note: When you have programmed a Timer, makesure that the green timer indication in the displayis switched on! Please refer to page 30.
Nice to know...• If you happen to make a mistake or change
your mind while you are programming, justpress the PROGRAM button again – and startover.
• While you are programming a Timer, pressingthe ss button will take you back one step inthe programming sequence.
• For a Timer Stand-by programming, you willneither be asked to key in a source, nor a starttime. All the system needs to know, is at whattime you want it to stop playing, and howoften.
• The system has a 24-hour clock. This means thatthe display reads, for example, 22.15 for aquarter past ten pm. In order for the Timers tobe executed correctly, the clock must be set tothe correct time – see how on page 32.
• If you want to set the volume level higher orlower for your Timer, refer to page 34 forfurther instruction.
• “How often?”...The system must be programmed to carry out aTimer either once on a specific date (ONCE), oron selected weekdays in the future (WEEKLY).
If you select ONCE, the cue DATE in the displayprompts you to select a date within the nextmonth (1-31). Press � or � and then PLAY to doso.
If you select WEEKLY, seven dashes appear inthe display, prompting you to fill in theweekday(s) on which you want the system tocarry out the Timer: M T W T F S S. The lettersrepresent the seven days of the week, startingwith M for Monday. Press � to enter a day, andpress tt to move on to the next day you wantto enter. Finally press PLAY to accept the daysin the display.

When the BeoSound Ouverture is used in certaintypes of integrated Bang & Olufsen AV systems(see page 39), the Timer Play function will not beavailable. Timer Play must then be programmedvia your TV*.
*Note: If you make a Timer Play via your TV andwish to hear Radio in your TV speakers, then youstill have to cut in the Timer Play function onBeoSound Ouverture to get access to Radio.Cutting in Timer Play on Ouverture is described onpage 30.

Checking or cancelling your Timers
You can look up each Timer you haveprogrammed to either check itscontents, or to cancel it completely. Todo so, you must press the PROGRAMbutton.
When you have pressed PROGRAM,you must first decide which type ofTimer it is that you want to look up:RECORD, PLAY, or ST.BY. (stand-by).
Then, display CHECK? – and pressPLAY. You will then find that eachTimer you have programmed withinthat group is listed.
To leaf through the Timers, just press �repeatedly. You can also check theexact contents of a Timer by pressingPLAY repeatedly.
At the end of each Timer, you will seethe cue MORE? in the display, mean-ing: “Do you want to check the nexttimer programming?” Press PLAY ifyou do; or press � or tt to revealCLEAR? instead.
While CLEAR? is displayed, pressingPLAY will clear (cancel) the Timer youhave just checked.
Note: If you want to clear a Timer, withoutchecking its contents first, just look up the Timerand press tt to step directly to MORE?, then press� or tt to reveal CLEAR...

Adjusting sound
The SETUP button gives access toadjusting the sound coming out of thespeakers connected to the BeoSoundOuverture. And it gives access tostoring the adjustment as a permanentsetting, if you like.
All you have to do is choose a sourceand then find SOUND? in the displayand press PLAY.
You can then adjust the volume leveland the bass and treble levels to suityour personal taste; you can alter thebalance between the left and the rightspeaker to direct the sound towardsyour favourite listening position; andyou can cut the loudness function in orout as you like.
Each time you press the PLAY button, a new cue appears in the display,indicating which adjustment can bemade, and showing the current setting.
Then use the step buttons � and �, orss and tt to adjust as required.
You can press RESET any time to resetthe sound levels to their originalsettings.
However, all you have to do to turnyour adjustment into a permanentsetting of the system, is keep pressingPLAY, until the display reads STORE?.Then press PLAY one last time to storeyour new sound setting.

The display shows the current volume level.Volume can be adjusted in steps of two within arange of 00 to 72.
The display shows the current balance setting –here neutral. Balance can be adjusted within arange of 7 to either side.
The display shows the current bass level – hereneutral. Bass can be adjusted within a range of-5 to +5.
The display shows the current treble level – hereneutral. Treble can be adjusted within a range of–5 to +5.
The display shows the current loudness setting –ON if it is switched on, OFF it is switched off.
The display asks you if you want to store thecurrent sound setting. Press PLAY if you do.
Nice to know...• When the BeoSound Ouverture leaves the
factory, all these sound levels are set to neutralvalues which will suit the majority of situations.
• All the current sound levels will be storedsimultaneously.
• If you make your sound adjustments withoutaccepting STORE? in the end, the soundadjustment cues simply disappear, and thesystem reverts to normal playback. But, whenyou switch off the system, the adjusted soundlevels will be reset to their original values.
• To adjust volume, you need not press the SETUPbutton first – just press the volume buttons ∧ or∨; or press MUTE to silence the speakerscompletely.
• The loudness function is used to compensate forthe human ear’s lack of sensitivity to high andlow frequencies when listening to low volumelevels. It “boosts” the high and low frequencies,so that the music becomes more dynamic.
• When the BeoSound Ouverture is used in a fullyintegrated Bang & Olufsen AV system (see page39), sound must be adjusted as described in theguide for your video system.

Playing auxiliary sources
The AUX button enables you to startplaying any extra Bang & Olufsenequipment* you may have connectedto the BeoSound Ouverture.
You will then hear the sound from theextra source through your BeoSoundOuverture speakers.
While the source is playing, you cancontrol some of the daily playbackfunctions via the BeoSound Ouverturekey-pad. The available functions areshown to the left on this page...
If you select one of the sources in theBeoSound Ouverture instead, the AUXfunction is stopped automatically.
Or, you may press the stand-by button• to switch off both the auxiliary sourceand the BeoSound Ouverturesimultaneously.
Note: The extra equipment must be connected tothe AUX-socket on the back of the BeoSoundOuverture. For further information, please referto the Setting-up guide which is also enclosedwith the BeoSound Ouverture.
* Note: Only Bang & Olufsen data-link productscan be used as described on this page.

Music throughout the house
The Bang & Olufsen BeoLink systemenables you to “take your system withyou”.
As you move through your house, youcan communicate with your BeoSoundOuverture in any room in which youhave installed BeoLink equipment.
You can play any program or musicsource you like on the BeoSoundOuverture and hear it in the room withyour extra speakers or your extra TV.
The basic functions offered by theBeoSound Ouverture can even beoperated via your BeoLink products –just as if you were operating thesystem directly, using the remotecontrol.
Please refer to the User’s guide foryour BeoLink products for operatinginstructions.
For the BeoLink system to work, a BeoLinkinstallation is required from the BeoSoundOuverture (or your AV system) to the room whereyou want sound and pictures – or sound alone.
Different configurations are available. Your Bang & Olufsen dealer will assist you with furtherinformation.

All that is required for the audio/video integrationto work is that your Bang & Olufsen video systemand the BeoSound Ouverture are interconnectedby a special link cable.
The special link cable is available at your Bang &Olufsen dealer, who will also assist you withfurther information about audio/video integra-tion.

You can operate the BeoSoundOuverture in conjunction with a Bang& Olufsen video system*. You can thenhear any source you like in theloudspeakers of either system.
You can, for example, hear a musicvideo through the Ouverture speakers,or listen-in while the TV news isplaying; or you can use the system theother way around, and listen to theradio, a CD, or a tape on your TVspeakers.
To operate these audio/videofunctions, you must use the AV* LISTbutton on the Beo4 remote control.
Audio/Video recordingThe video sound you hear in the Ouverturespeakers can be recorded on the tape in theBeoSound Ouverture. To do so, just follow theusual recording procedure.
Likewise, the sound you hear in the TV speakerscan be recorded on the video tape recorder –please refer to the User’s guide for your videosystem to see how.
If only sound is heard in the TV speakers (that is ifthe TV screen is blank), you will record soundonly; but if the sound is accompanied by pictures,the pictures will be recorded along with thesound produced by your BeoSound Ouverture (=simulcast recording).
Note: A special recording lock function ensuresthat you cannot switch to another program whilesuch a recording is in progress.

BeoSound Ouverture withoutspeakers – AV system...The BeoSound Ouverture music centrecan also be used in a Bang & Olufsensurround sound AV system.
In an AV system, you have direct accessto all your audio and video sources –and they are all heard through thesame set of loudspeakers.
To play a source in the AV system, allyou have to do is press a single button– either directly on the system (audioor video), or on the remote control.
The Beo4 remote control integratesremote operation of all the sources inthe AV system.
Note: The operations described on page 38 do notapply to a fully integrated AV system as describedon this page.
Beo4 remote control and AV system...In a fully integrated Bang & Olufsen AV system,the AV button on the Beo4 remote control givesaccess to a few extra functions:
• Simulcast radio/TV transmissions...To watch a TV program while listening to thesound from a radio program at the same time,press TV then LIST until AV* is displayed, andthen RADIO on the Beo4 remote control.(Simulcast radio/TV transmissions can berecorded on the video tape recorder.)
• Recording on the ‘opposite’ recorder...In an AV system, the sound from your videosources (TV, Satellite, or video tape) can berecorded on the tape in the BeoSoundOuverture: To do so, you must press, forexample, TV then LIST until AV* is displayed,and then RECORD, RECORD on the Beo4 remotecontrol.
*Note: In order to display AV on Beo4, you mustadd the function to Beo4. Please refer to Beo4’sown User’s guide and the chapter Customisingyour Beo4 for further instruction.
When the BeoSound Ouverture music centre isused in a fully integrated Bang & Olufsen AVsystem, the video system takes over some ofthe functions mentioned in this guide, forexample the functions related to the BeoSoundOuverture SETUP button.
In an AV system, the loudspeakers (two or four)are connected to the video system.
Furthermore, in an AV system all remote controloperations (audio and video) must be directed tothe video system.

If you have BeoLink installed in yourhome and choose to place yourBeoSound Ouverture in a link room,operate your BeoSound Ouverture as ifit was placed in a main room.
You can listen to the sources availablein your link room BeoSound Ouvertureand you can hear the audio or videosources from your main room onBeoSound Ouverture as well.
You can furthermore also record thesound from the sources available inyour main room system onto yourBeoSound Ouverture audio taperecorder.
