IMPORTANT SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

Important! Read all of the safety instructions:

Warning! If the power cable is defective or the GT1 is damaged, you are not permitted to use the GT1 until a qualified expert has checked the device.

Warning! The power cable and measuring cable must not be laid across tables, benches or cabinets, and they must be placed in such a way that no one will trip over them. They must not be placed in the vicinity of hot objects or rotating parts.

Warning! The power cable must not be extended. Where possible, use only the power cable supplied.

Warning! If you are not using the GT1 for a longer period, switch it off at the on/off button and disconnect it from the power supply if the battery is charged. When you disconnect the power supply plug, do not pull the cable. Hold the power supply plug itself and pull it out of the socket.

Warning! You must not operate the GT1 in the vicinity of open fuel tanks or below floor height, for example in pits or similar locations; oth-erwise there is a danger of explosion or fire due to gases and/or vapors.

Warning! Ensure that there is adequate ventilation when you are working on vehicles with the engine running; otherwise there is a danger of poisoning.

Warning! Use the GT1 only in the manner prescribed in the "Components and Functions" manual. Use only the recommended and ap-proved devices and components with the GT1.

Important! The GT1 is a device of Protection Class 1 and is equipped with a power cable that has been tested for safety. It may be con-nected only to power supplies with a protective ground conduc-tor (TN systems) and/or power sockets with protective ground conductors.

Warning! The electrical installation must comply with the requirements stated in the "Components and Functions" manual and may be carried out only by qualified personnel.

Warning! The GT1 must not be operated at the diagnosis interface in a driven vehicle.

Warning! If you open the device without authorization or make unqualified repairs to it, you could be exposed to considerable danger.

Caution

The data transfer lines must not be connected or disconnected during thunderstorms.

Important

Fluctuations and deviations in the power supply voltage outside the permitted tolerance can lead to failures in the electronics.

1 General Information

The "Components and Functions" manual contains all of the information required for commissioning, maintenance, care and service for use in accordance with the intended purpose of the vehicle diagnosis system Group Tester One, hereinafter referred to as "GT1". It is supplemented by the "Working with the GT1" manual, in which you will find all the information regarding soft-ware installation, network administration, and diagnostic head connection.Both manuals ("Components and Functions", "Working with the GT1") are to be viewed as a whole. They address technical-ly qualified personnel who have relevant knowledge in the field of vehicle diagnosis and measuring systems.

Knowledge of and technically flawless implementation of the safety instructions and warnings contained in both manuals are a prerequisite for safe commissioning and for safety during op-eration and maintenance of the GT1.

So that the manuals remain easy to understand, they do not con-tain details of all versions of the described operating modes1 and are unable to take account of every conceivable case of commissioning, operation or maintenance and care.It can also be the case that the content of the screen displays shown deviates slightly from what is shown on the operating unit.

Read and comply with the safety instructions for the GT1. The general safety instructions follow the table of contents; specific safety instructions appear at the relevant positions in the "Com-ponents and Functions" manual.

1.2 Use in accordance with intended purpose

• The GT1 may only be used on vehicles.

• The described product has been developed, manufactured, tested and documented taking account of the relevant safety standards. If the technical safety instructions and prescribed commissioning, use in accordance with the intended pur-pose as well as recommended maintenance and care are ob-served, the GT1 will normally not represent any danger with regard to damage to property or the health of individuals.

1.3 Delivery

On receipt of the GT1, please comply with the following:1. Course of action in the event of transport damage on delivery

- The packaging is damaged: have the carrier confirm the damage on the delivery pa-pers.

- Packaging is undamaged, but the content is dam-aged:report the damage immediately to the SIEMENS Service responsible (address and fax number, see chapter 7).

2. Please check whether the power supply voltage on your pre-mises has a nominal range from 110 V to 240 V. The GT1 may only be operated within this range!

3. When the GT1 is delivered, dewfall must be prevented. For this reason, we ask you to leave the device at the place it will be operated for approx. 3 hours without switching on the power so that the temperature can balance itself out to an adequate extent.

4. Please read the safety instructions and commissioning in-structions prior to commissioning, see chapter 3.

5. To ensure optimized and rapid support within the framework of the three-year service agreement with SIEMENS Service, we require feedback regarding the GT1 components you are using.In this connection, please either use the Internet for- GT1 Online Registration (see chapter 7) or, if this is not

possible,

- take the GT1 Fax Registration Form from the Appendix to chapter 7, fill it out and fax it to the number specified on the sheet.

2 Setup and Operation

The GT1 has been prepared for operation in a motor vehicle workshop. By means of a diagnostic head connected to the ve-hicle, it supports the technician in troubleshooting, locating faults and using the measuring system. The diagnostic head connected to the GT1 can be used to set up communication with the vehicle. For your orientation, this chapter describes all the components of the GT1.

Stationary and mobile operation

You can operate the GT1 as a stationary or mobile unit. • In the case of stationary operation, the operating unit is

kept in a docking station, where it is supplied with voltage.

• In the case of mobile operation, the operating unit is not connected to the docking station. It receives its power supply from its own battery or across an adapter cable from a vehi-cle electrical system. With the integrated battery, you can op-erate the operating unit for approx. 2.5 hours.

You are able to use the measuring system of the operating unit for both stationary or mobile operation.

2.2 Operating unit

The operating unit is the central component of the GT1. The operating system, application programs as well as the neces-sary data are stored on the hard disk built into the operating unit.

Front The following components are located on the front:1. PCMCIA interface (radio card slot; in the left handle. Service

2.2.1 Monitor

Touch screen The surface of the monitor is covered by a touch-sensitive plas-tic sheet that senses the pressure of a finger or of the supplied touch-pen and transfers it to the system. This special surface is referred to as a touch screen. It replaces the conventional function of a mouse or keyboard.

Important

The touch screen reacts to any tactile contact. When you are us-ing the operating unit, make sure it is protected against inadvert-ent contact by devices or persons.

Caution

Only use your finger or the supplied touch-pen to operate the touch screen. If other objects are used, this can damage the sur-face and under certain circumstances make it necessary to re-pair the GT1. The repair will be charged.

Select To select display elements such as texts, fields or buttons, you have to touch these at the appropriate point on the touch-screen surface. These are then highlighted by a change in color:

• Texts are highlighted in a bright color and with a dark selection bar

• Buttons assume a dark-gray color and appear in a sunken perspective (relief).

As long as you are still touching the touch-screen surface, you can change the selection. If you stop touching the screen, the selected element is activated and the corresponding function is started. In the following, this operation is referred to as pressing.

Touch-pen The touch-pen is an ergonomic operating aid for the touch screen and it makes it easier to operate the displays: you can use its tip, for example, to make targeted selections of screen ele-ments that are too small to operate using your finger.

Virtual keyboard If the system asks you to enter data, a virtual keyboard appears in the screen display. It is operated in a similar way to that famil-iar to you from a conventional mechanical keyboard.

Note

The supplied optical keyboard is intended for service purposes only, not for the operation of the system.

The virtual keyboard can consist of a letter block (alpha-numeric keypad) and/or a numeric keypad.

Alpha-numeric keypad

If an alpha-numeric keypad appears on the touch screen, you can enter lower and upper case letters as well as blanks. You can read your input in the corresponding area on the touch screen.

If upper case letters are entered, they are reset to lower case as soon as they are keyed in!

Important

Please note that the arrangement of the alpha-numeric keypad corresponds to that of a US computer keyboard: some keys might therefore be located in different positions to those on a standard keyboard commercially available in your country. Spe-cial national characters such as accents, umlauts, etc. cannot be entered using the virtual keyboard.

Special keys The alpha-numeric keypad contains the following special keys:

• Upper case: these are two keys that are marked with an ar-row pointing upwards. If you press an upper case key, the let-tering of the keys switches from lower to upper case letters and vice versa.

• Backspace: this key is marked with an arrow pointing to the left. It deletes the last entered character.

• Return/Enter: this key is marked with an arrow pointing downwards to the left. It completes an entry or switches to the next line.

Numeric keypad If a numeric keypad appears on the touch screen, you can enter numerical values and possibly mathematical functions. You can read your input in the corresponding area on the touch screen.

Note

As required, it is possible that only a selection of the keys shown in the above example appears.

Special keys The numeric keypad might also contain special keys for basic arithmetical calculations (+ - * /) and a decimal separator.

Important

The only decimal separator you can use is a decimal point (period). Entering a comma leads to an error message.

2.2.2 Block of controls

The block of controls is located directly beneath the touch screen. It consists of the following elements:1. IR interface

IR interface (1) The IR interface serves to set up the connection to the supplied optical keyboard (see section 2.6).

LEDs (2 to 4) The three LEDs indicate the operating status of the operating unit:

LED "Tempera-ture", one color.

This lights up red when the operating unit is no longer being adequately cooled. In this event, it switches itself off automatically after approx. 10 seconds. Then initiate the measures described in section 6.2.

LED "Battery", one color.

It lights up: yellow when the battery is being charged,yellow (flashing) if excess temperature per-sists. In this case, the operating unit cannot be started.

LED "Opera-tion", two colors.

It lights up: green for external power supply,orange for internal power supply from the bat-tery,orange (flashing) for internal power supply from the battery when it is almost discharged,green/orange (flashing alternately) for ex-ternal power supply when the battery has been removed or is defective.

On/off button (5) You use the on/off button to switch the operating unit on and off or to initiate a forced switch-off (see "Working with the GT1" manual).This does not affect the battery charging operation.

2.2.3 Connections

Top side On the top side of the operating unit is a DVD drive as well as most of the connections for accessories.

1. DVD drive: for playback of DVDs and CD-ROMs, see section 2.2.6

2. VGA: for connection of an external monitor

3. COM: for future applications with serial connection4. LAN: for connection to a local workshop network

( LAN) or a diagnostic head

5. USB: double, for connection of USB devices6. Audio input: for connection of a microphone

7. Audio output: for connection of headphones or loudspeak-ers

8. Firewire (IEEE 1394): e.g. for multimedia functions

9. Base measuring system/vehicle electrical system: for connection of measuring cables or an external power supply from the vehicle electrical system

2.2.4 Power supply

The power supply of the operating unit is from a choice of three voltage sources:• internal from the integrated battery (operation period

approx. 2.5 hours)

• external by means of docking station• external from the vehicle electrical system (connection at

cigarette lighter or electrical system socket with adapter cable possible)

2.2.5 Operating modes

The operating unit differentiates between the following operating modes:

Standby The operating unit is switched off; the GT1 might be connected to an external power supply. If the battery is adequately charged, all the LEDs are off; during charging, the LED "Battery" lights up.

Power up The GT1 is booted. The LED "Operation" lights up green or or-ange depending on the type of power supply. If the battery is be-ing charged, the LED "Battery" also lights up.

Normal operation The application software is loaded; the touch screen can be op-erated. The LED "Operation" lights up green or orange depend-ing on the type of power supply. If the battery is being charged, the LED "Battery" lights up.

Shut down The GT1 is switched off or switches itself off, e.g. to avoid dam-age that could be caused by overheating. The running applica-tions are closed; the operating system is shut down. The LED "Operation" goes out. If the battery is being charged, the LED "Battery" stays lit up.

Forced switch-off The GT1 is switched off immediately without the running appli-cations being closed and the operating system being properly shut down. The LED "Operation" goes out. If the battery is being charged, the LED "Battery" stays lit up.

Caution

Only use the forced switch-off in emergencies. Otherwise, the operating system of the operating unit can become inconsistent and a complete new installation will be required!

Energy save If the GT1 is not operated for several minutes, an energy saving mode becomes active. The touch screen switches itself off if it is not operated for 10 minutes. As soon as you touch the touch screen, the window that was last opened is displayed again.

Note

There is no impairment of the running functions.

Important

The touch screen also switches off when a program is running and no input is made for a longer period.

2.2.6 DVD drive

The DVD drive is accessible from the top of the operating unit (see fig. 2-7). It can take DVDs and CD-ROMs, with which you load programs, applications or updates onto the operating unit.

Caution

When you open or close the DVD drive, the operating unit must not be inclined more than 14° from the horizontal, as otherwise the drive tray or the inserted data medium can be damaged (see section 2.3.2). Due to its high power intake, the DVD drive should not be used in mobile operation (with power supply from the bat-tery). When you eject the DVD tray, sensitive parts of the optical scan-ner elements become accessible. Make sure that these are not soiled or damaged.

Important

When you insert a CD or DVD, make sure that it fully engages in the centering or retaining bracket on the DVD tray. When engag-ing the data medium, support the drive tray with your free hand, otherwise the vibration and mechanical load could alter the set-ting of the scanner head.

Note

The safest way to perform actions with the DVD drive is when you operate the operating unit in the DVD 14° operating position in the docking station. CDs/DVDs may only be inserted, removed and operated in this inclination!

2.3 Docking station

The docking station is intended for stationary operation of the operating unit.

It consists of the following elements:1. Operating unit reception point with docking interface

(not visible in the illustration)

2. Hinge with interlock for use at various inclinations3. Key to release the interlock when the inclination is changed

2.3.1 Connections

The docking station provides the power supply for stationary op-eration of the operating unit. It also has interfaces for the con-nection of a USB device and to the workshop network.

The following connections and interfaces are on the docking sta-tion:1. Docking interface

Important

No telephone or modem may be connected to the LAN interface (RJ45 socket).

2.3.2 Mechanical use

Docking and undocking

In stationary operation, the operating unit is supplied with power via the operating unit reception point and it is connected to the interfaces of the docking station. Inserting the operating unit in the operating unit reception point (establishing the connection) is referred to as docking; disengaging (breaking the connection) is referred to as undocking.

You can set the operating unit reception point in multiple stages to a suitable inclination of the docked-on operating unit so that you can see and operate the touch screen in the best possible way. When changing the inclination, you can use the red button on the docking station to open the inclination lock.

Standard inclination

The monitor inclination for optimum operability is 80° (standard inclination).

Note

In this inclination, the optical keyboard can be used via the infra-red connection.

DVD inclinations The DVD inclination is 14°. It is marked with a CD-ROM symbol. Lock the docking station at this inclination if you are installing programs or updates from a CD.

Caution

You must not use the DVD drive at inclinations above 14°, other-wise read errors can occur.

Other inclinations You can set the docking station to inclinations of 65°, 50° and 35° in order to be able to read the touch screen more clearly in spe-cial situations.

2.4 Diagnostic head

The diagnostic head enables operation of the diagnosis interface either by radio or cable. In a workshop, a number of diagnostic heads of this kind can be used. For this purpose, with the oper-ating unit in the "Administration" operating mode, the "Connec-tion setup", window identifies the individual diagnostic heads.

2.5.1 Measuring cable

Multifunction cable MFK 1

The multifunction cable MFK 1 consists of an ODU connector, size 3, for connection to the base measuring system/vehicle electrical system socket, a junction, one red and one black test tip. The red test tip has the button for activating the freeze image function in the measuring system (see "Working with the GT1" manual). The black test tip is used for the ground connection and can be unplugged.

The MFK1 can be used to measure electrical variables.

Multifunction cable MFK 2 has the same external appearance as the MFK 1; the only difference is that the junction bears the let-tering "MFK 2". It can be used to measure voltages of up to ±500 V peak values.

LAN diagnostic head cable

The LAN diagnostic head cable is 10 meters long and consists of an RJ45 connector, the cable itself and a 7-pin, orange-clad plug connector for connection to the diagnostic head. You use it to connect the diagnostic head via the two LAN adapters to the operating unit.

2.6 Optical keyboard

The optical keyboard receives its power supply from four 1.5-V batteries of type AA. It consists of the keypad, an IR interface that can communicate with the IR interface of the operating unit, and an identification key for unique identification of the keyboard on the operating unit.

Note

The optical keyboard is only for service purposes and future ap-plications.

2.7 Vehicle battery adapter cable

The vehicle battery adapter cable is 1.5 meters long and it has an ODU connector, size 3, and a standard Euro connector of type BSB-12. You can use it to supply power to the operating unit from a vehicle electrical system in mobile operation.

3 Commissioning

This chapter describes how you commission the GT1 for opera-tion.

Warning

Due to the danger of explosion of gases and vapors, the GT1 must be set up at least 50 cm above the workshop floor. It should not be exposed to direct sunlight, excessive heat, moisture or fluids.The power supply must be freely accessible: in emergencies, it must be possible to disconnect the power supply plug immedi-ately!

3.1 System number

In order to ensure unique allocation of the new GT1 to the user, it is necessary to assign a system number to each system. This number is also retained if individual system components are re-placed. You need it:

1. to register your GT1 with the Siemens Service Center and2. for every fault notification to the Siemens hotline responsible

per fax or online.

This is why you receive a label with your GT1, the upper section of which contains the system number (see fig. 3-1). You can peel it off and attach it to the "Components and Functions" manual. Place the lower section in the supplied sleeve and secure it in the vicinity of your desired GT1 work center.

3.2 Registration form

In order to ensure support from Siemens Service, now register your GT1 either by Internet (see chapter 7) or - if you do not have Internet access or the online registration does not work - with the registration form, which you can copy, fill out and fax to the Siemens Service Center in Germany (sample and fax number, see chapter 7).

3.3 System structure

As of CD 29 Depending on the on-site circumstances and technical require-ments, the GT1 can be set up and operated in different ways (see "Working with the GT1" manual).

Note

As of CD 33, the type of connection setup can change. You will be informed of this separately.

3.4 Docking station

If you operate the GT1 as a stationary unit, choose a dry location with a firm, level and clean surface for the docking station. Dock the operating unit in such a way that the docking plug is inserted into the socket as far as it will go.

3.5 Operating unit

3.5.1 Setting up the power supply

Note

The GT1 is supplied on a country-specific basis with one or more of the following seven power cables:

• EU power cable for the European Union except Great Britain and Ireland, parts of Africa, South America and Asia

• US power cable for North America, Central America, and parts of South America

• UK power cable for Great Britain, Ireland, and parts of Africa and Asia

• AF power cable for South Africa• CH power cable for Switzerland

• AUS power cable for Australia• CN power cable for China

Should it not be possible to connect the supplied power cable to your national mains supply, you can use the Siemens Hotline to have it replaced by a model that is usual for your country, that meets the standard for operation on grounded mains power sup-plies, and is approved for these (TN mains complying with VDE 8085, EN 60950, IEC 950, UL 1950, CSA 22.2 No. 950).Operation on ungrounded supplies or supplies grounded via im-pedance (IT networks) is not permitted.

Operation with docking station

If you operate the GT1 as a stationary unit with a docking station, set up the power supply as follows:

1. Set the operating unit reception point to the standard inclina-tion.

2. Dock the operating unit in such a way that the connector of the docking interface is inserted into the socket as far as it will go.

3. Connect the power cable to the power supply of the docking station.

4. Connect the power cable to the power supply of your work-shop. In doing so, ensure that you comply with the general safety instructions preceding the table of contents!

Operation via vehicle electrical system

The vehicle battery adapter cable can be connected to the ciga-rette lighter or electrical system socket of a vehicle. If you con-nect the other end to the base measuring system/vehicle electrical system socket, you can supply the operating unit with power from the vehicle electrical system. A prerequisite for this is that a vehicle voltage of at least 11 V is available.This kind of power supply is only possible for mobile operation.

Note

The battery of the operating unit is not charged in this case.

3.5.2 Charging the battery

When the operating unit is switched on, the internal components are supplied with voltage. If the operating unit is not connected to an external power source, the integrated battery supplies the power. In order to ensure reliable operation, you must now charge the battery for the first time. This takes place automati-cally as soon as you have set up a power supply via the docking station. The charging time is approx. 2 hours. While the battery is being charged, the LED "Battery" lights up yellow.

3.6 Optical keyboard

If you are operating the operating unit in the DVD inclination of the docking station and operating the optical keyboard under the infrared interface of the operating unit, there is no connection. To set up a connection, set the operating unit to the inclination 35° or standard inclination.

Note

When in use, the optical keyboard must have a clear path to the infrared interface on the front of the operating unit and not be more than 1 meter away from it. The ideal distance is below 0.5 meters.

Important

When using the optical keyboard, ensure that there are no other operating units within the range of your infrared interface, as oth-erwise it can react to inputs in an undesirable manner.

Power supply Insert the four supplied batteries of type AA in the battery com-partment on the underside of the optical keyboard. Ensure that the polarity is correct.

Important

If the batteries are old, there is a danger that they will leak.If you notice connection problems with the optical keyboard and the operating unit, replace the batteries (if necessary, determine this by measuring the charge status of the batteries).

Setting the identification

If you are operating a number of optical keyboards in one work-shop room, you should set them to different identifications so that the operating unit only receives control commands from one keyboard. Here, you have a choice of eight different identifica-tions.

1. Press the identification key on the back of the optical key-board and keep it pressed (see fig. 3-6).

2. On the keypad of the optical keyboard, press a numerical key between 0 and 7 to set your identification.

You can change the identification at any time by following steps 1 and 2.

4.1 Transporting in the workshop

Caution! Always transport the components of the GT1 separately. Never leave the operating unit docked on the docking station, not even for transport over short distances!

Operating unit While you are working, you can hold the operating unit comfort-ably with one hand and use the touch-pen with the other.

Docking station Should it become necessary to reposition the docking station, proceed as follows:1. Undock the operating unit.

2. Disconnect all the cable connections from the docking station.

3. Transport the docking station to its new location. Comply with the setup instructions (section 3.3).

4. Reconnect all the cable connections.5. Dock the operating unit on again.

4.2 Shipping

For return transport of a defective component to Service, you may pack it in the transport cases in which you received the re-placement parts from Service (see section 6.3). The components are given the optimum protection in these cases.

Operating unit If the operating unit has to be replaced, you have to decommis-sion it properly:1. Check whether a CD is inserted in the DVD drive and remove

it if applicable.

Caution

Bear in mind that when you open the DVD drive the operating unit must not be inclined away from the horizontal by more than 14°! For shipping, the integrated battery remains in the device.

2. Switch the operating unit off.3. If you operate the operating unit at the docking station, un-

dock it.

4. Unfasten all connected cables.

5. Pack the operating unit in the transport case and send it to the relevant Service point.

Docking station If the docking station has to be replaced, you have to decommis-sion it properly:1. Undock the operating unit.

2. Unfasten all connected cables.3. Lock the operating unit reception point at inclination 14°.

4. Pack the docking station in the transport case and send it to the relevant Service point.

Accessories Diagnostic heads that need to be replaced are also sent to you in a transport case. Defective cables and adapters can also be returned in the packaging in which you received the replacement parts.

5 Maintenance and Care

5.1 Visual inspection

So that the GT1 can be used to optimum effect, it is required that you keep it in perfect condition.Perform regular visual inspections of the GT1. Check all compo-nents for damage (e.g. breaks) and soiling. Examine the touch screen in particular for damage or soiling. Clean it, if necessary, in accordance with section 5.2.

Regularly check all cables for damage.

Warning! Damaged power cables must be replaced in all cases.

5.2 Cleaning the GT1

If the casing is soiled, undock the operating unit and clean the operating unit and docking station with a lint-free, damp (not wet!) cloth.

Caution

Switch the device off. Disconnect all cables. Make absolutely sure that no fluid enters the casing.Do not attempt to clean the inside of the DVD drive.

If the operating unit or docking station become damaged, please contact the SIEMENS Hotline (see chapter 7).

5.3 Touch screen

The most sensitive component of the operating unit is the touch screen. Its sensitivity to touch can be impaired by dirt and scratches. Should it become soiled, clean with a soft, lint-free cloth. If the dirt cannot be removed in this way, you can use iso-propanol or ammonia-free glass cleaner.

5.4 Battery

5.4.1 Use and Care of the Battery

You achieve the longest service life of the integrated battery if you fully load the battery and then completely discharge it (if possible) and if you form the battery once a month, i.e. discharge and recharge.Forming is recommended also when the GT1 has not been used for a longer period, as the battery discharges itself in this period.

Forming with docking station

To form the battery, proceed as follows:1. Undock the switched-on control panel from the docking sta-

tion or disconnect the docking station from the mains supply.

2. Leave the control panel switched on until all LEDs have gone out. The battery is now discharged.

3. Dock the control panel on once again and/or connect the docking station to the mains supply to recharge the battery.

Charging the battery

The charge process takes approx. 2 hours. You will see that the charging has been completed when the "Battery" LED goes out.

If the standby period of the battery is not reached even after re-peated forming, you have to replace it.

Caution

Always replace a defective battery with a new battery. Never op-erate the control panel without a battery: if the power supply is suddenly interrupted, the installed operating system can be-come inconsistent.

5.4.2 Changing the battery

Change the battery as follows: 1. Switch the operating unit off properly and undock it.

2. Place the operating unit on a level, clean, free surface.3. Remove the screw on the right handle of the operating unit

with a suitable screwdriver.

4. Carefully pull off the handle to the right. Make sure that the connection cables of the battery are not torn out of the socket.

5. Press the battery lightly against its spring retainer on the top side of the handle and remove it carefully.

6. Press the retainer of the battery connector downwards and pull it carefully out of its socket.

7. Connect the connector of a new battery to the socket. The connector must snap into place in the socket.

8. Insert the new battery in the handle. The battery cable must point towards the underside of the operating unit and the bat-tery must lie with a narrow edge on the inner floor of the han-dle.

9. Place the handle on the operating unit in such a way that the tongue snaps into place at the bottom of the operating unit. The connection cable must not be pinched here.

10.Attach the handle using the screw removed in step 3.

11. In order to ensure safe operation, you now have to charge the replaced battery for the first time by setting up the power supply across the docking station. See section 5.4.1 "Use and care of the battery".

Important

Dispose of the battery in an environmentally friendly manner.

6 Troubleshooting

The GT1 is a product of SIEMENS. It was inspected before it left the factory. Carefully selected components and maintenance of numerous quality controls guarantee high resistance of the GT1. Should a fault occur in spite of this, please consult the instruc-tions in this chapter before contacting the Customer Service re-sponsible. Faults that can occur on the GT1 can be divided into the follow-ing groups:

• Faults caused by environmental influences: ambient temper-ature, (aggressive) moisture, dust, soot, grease, flying sparks, mains supply, transformers, large electric motors, ra-dio-control systems, vibration.

• Faults on the GT1: operating unit, docking station, diagnostic head, cables and other accessories such as keyboard.

In the "Working with the GT1" manual, you will find a table for each component listing symptoms, possible causes and how to rectify the faults (see "Working with the GT1" manual).

Please attempt to determine the fault and localize it as precisely as possible. Follow the suggested solutions provided and per-form all the recommended measures if possible.If the fault that has occurred cannot be rectified using the de-scribed measures, follow the instructions in section 6.2.

6.1 Self-test

After switching on, the GT1 automatically runs a self-test. It is ready for operation when the start window is displayed and op-eration via the touch screen is possible.

Note

This self-test is not identical to the self-test that can be called up manually in the "Administration" operating mode (see "Working with the GT1" manual).

If you receive error messages after this self-test, send a Fault Re-port Fax to the SIEMENS Hotline in accordance with section 6.2.

6.2 Fault reports to Customer Service

If the fault cannot be remedied, please contact SIEMENS Service.

Note

The quickest way for your fault report to reach SIEMENS Service is by phone. Explain the fault pattern as precisely as possible (report etc.), when and after which action the fault occurred, what you have done to pinpoint the fault, and what the result of this was. In certain cases it may be advisable to submit the fault in writing. Use the Fault Report Fax contained in the "SERVICE ADDRESSES" documentation for this pur-pose. To do this, print and fill out the form. Then send the fax form to the cor-responding fax number listed in the "SERVICE ADDRESSES". Keep all written fault reports.

6.3 Spare parts and accessories

During the warranty period and/or the three-year period of your Service Agreement, the GT1 is repaired by replacement of de-fined components. The SIEMENS Service responsible for your area will tell you which components are to be replaced in the event of a fault after you have submitted a fault report. The hot-line will then arrange for you to receive the required spare parts.

7 Forms and Addresses

7.1 Online registration

If you have access to the Internet, the simplest way to register your GT1 is online.1. Start your Web browser and enter the address

www.siemens.de/sidis. The Siemens SIDIS homepage appears.

2. In the top menu bar, choose between the languages "German" and "English".

3. Clicking the "Service" menu item in the left menu bar sets up a new page.

4. In the left menu bar, select the "For users" menu item.5. On the next page, select the "Online Registration" menu item.

6. On the "Online Registration" page, enter the identification "GT1" in the first field and the four-digit system number of your GT1 (see section 3.1) in the second field.

7. Press the "Send" button.

8. In the "GT1 Online Registration" form that is now set up, en-ter the required data. Mandatory fields where you must make an entry are indicated by an asterisk.

9. Select the "Send" button. You receive a note to the effect that the data have been sent successfully.

This concludes the registration procedure. Break the online connection and close your browser.

7.2 Forms for Registration / Fault Reports

The forms "Registration" and "Fault Report" are provided on the documentation CD.

Use copies of these forms. File the pages faxed to Customer Service.

8.1 Definitions

Term Explanation

Alpha-numeric keypad

Keypad that can be used to enter numbers and letters.

Button A button located in a window which changes from unpressed to pressed and starts a function.

CD-ROM Compact Disk - Read Only Memory: a data me-dium, externally similar to a music CD, that can only be read, not written.

COM "Communication": designation of the serial inter-face.

Control unit Electronic device for controlling and monitoring vehicle functions. Vehicle system

Deselection, deselect

Canceling a choice of program function or list entry. Selection.

Diagnosis The entire process of allocation between fault symptoms and possible defective functions, as-sembly groups or components, up to and includ-ing locating of a defective component. Can take place by calling up expert knowledge from the software data or directly through expert knowl-edge on the part of the user. Occasionally, the result of the processes is also termed "Diagno-sis".

Diagnosis connec-tion

Connecting socket for the diagnostic cable on the diagnostic head.

Diagnostic cable Connecting cable between vehicle and diagnos-tic head.

DVD Digital Versatile Disk : data storage medium similar to a CD-ROM, but with greater infor-mation density.

Energy-saving mode (standby mode)

Advanced Power Management (APM): if the touch screen is not touched for 10 minutes, the tester switches the display off to save power. The system continues to run. To switch on the screen display again, briefly touch any point on the touch screen.

Fault pattern The overall effects ( fault symptom) of a mal-function of vehicle functions, assembly groups or components.

Fault symptom A describable effect of a malfunction of vehicle functions, assembly groups or components. The symptoms together produce the fault pattern. In the software data of the vehicle diagnosis sys-tem, known symptoms are stored with alloca-tions to suspicious functions, assemblies and components. Diagnosis.

Function Every operation that the operating unit can run in its various operating modes. Individual func-tions are usually selected from a list displayed on the monitor.

IP address Internet Protocol Address: each station in a TCP/IP network uses a unique IP address. This consists of four byte values that can be set in the range from 0 - 255. The four segments (quads) are separated by periods. Network mask.

LAN Local Area Network: in contrast to a WAN (Wide Area Network), this connects workstations and networks in more than one region. "Local" in this sense refers to a shared location, for example company premises or a single room.

Navigation bar Functions in the lower section of the window to switch from the current display into other

functions.

Network mask The network mask (frequently also termed sub-net mask) determines which segments of an

IP address determine the network and which segments the station. A usual setting is "255.255.255.0", whereby the last "0" specifies that the fourth segment indicates the station. All stations of a workshop network have the same network ID, but different station IDs.

Numeric keypad Keypad that can be used to enter numbers but no texts.

Operating mode Each of the applications of the operating unit that can be started from the start window: "Di-agnosis", "Measuring system", "Administration" etc. Each operating mode is divided into a num-ber of individual functions.

Preselection The suggestion of the operating unit to start one of several functions from the current window. The preselection is shown on the screen by the

selection bar. It can be changed at any time. Selection.

Pull-down menu Selection menu that the operating unit brings onto the screen when certain buttons in the

"Services" line are operated.

Pull-up menu Selection menu that the operating unit brings onto the screen when certain buttons in the

navigation bar are operated.

Screen dump (hard-copy)

Paper printout of the screen contents ( window etc.).

Selection bar Optical highlighting of a selected line in a list by means of a dark (inverted) bar.

Selection, select Selection of an element from a list. The selected element is highlighted on the screen by a se-lection bar. Deselection, Preselection.

Services Functions in the top section of the window switch from the current display into other

functions or operating modes or to close them.

Start graphic Picture of a vehicle that appears in the start window.

Start window The representation shown on the screen by the operating unit after powering up. A choice of its four operating modes can be started here. Can be recognized by the start graphic.

Subnet mask Other designation for network mask.

System The software installed in the operating unit.

Touch screen (sensi-tive user interface)

Monitor that has a touch-sensitive surface. The corresponding hardware and software reacts to contact by objects such as a finger or a touch-pen, detects the touched position and starts up the function linked to it (e.g. a button). The touch screen replaces externally connected in-put devices such as keyboard, mouse, etc.

USB Universal Serial Bus: standard interface across which the peripheral devices, e.g. an external floppy disk drive, can be operated.

Vehicle system A control unit known by name, including the corresponding sensors, actuators and wiring.

Virtual keyboard The graphical image of a keyboard on the touch screen. The individual buttons can be

activated by finger pressure in the same way as with a real keyboard. The operating unit can offer

alpha-numeric or also numeric keypads.

Window Screen display with defined layout in different graphical elements such as fields, buttons, scrollbars, etc.
