1 IntroductionThis user manual has been written for the users operating the ultrasonic flowmeter FLUXUS. It contains important infor-mation about the measuring instrument, how to handle it correctly, and how to avoid damages.

Read the safety Instructions carefully. Make sure you have read and understood this user manual before using the mea-suring instrument.

All reasonable effort has been made to ensure the correctness of the content of this user manual. If you however find some erroneous information or miss information, we are grateful for any hint.

2 Safety Instructions

2.1 General Safety InstructionsPrior to starting any work, read the user manual carefully and in full.

Failure to comply with the instructions, in particular with the safety instructions, poses a risk to health and can lead to material damages. If you have any questions, please contact FLEXIM.

During installation and operation of the measuring equipment, observe the ambient and installation conditions specified in the documentation.

The following symbols are affixed to the measuring equipment:

The measuring equipment has to be checked for proper condition and operational safety before each use. If disturbances or damages have occurred during installation or operation of the measuring equipment, please inform FLEXIM.

It is not allowed to make unauthorized modifications or alterations to the measuring equipment.

If the measuring point is within an explosive atmosphere, the danger zone and present explosive atmosphere have to be determined. The transmitter, transducers and accessories have to be appropriate and approved for the conditions in this zone.

The personnel has to be suitably trained and experienced for the work.

Observe the "Safety instructions for the use in explosive atmospheres" (see document SIFLUXUS). Observe the instructions for hazardous substances and the respective safety data sheets. Observe the regulations for the disposal of electrical equip-ment.

2.2 Intended UseThe measuring equipment is intended for the measurement of fluid properties in closed pipes. By means of connected transducers, the transit times of the ultrasonic signals in the fluid and the pipe as well as other related properties, such as temperature and pressure, are measured and evaluated.

The transmitter uses these values to calculate the sought physical quantities, e.g., volumetric flow rate, mass flow rate, heat quantity, density and concentration. Through comparison with the values stored in the transmitter further physical quantities can be determined. The physical quantities are provided via configurable outputs and the display.

• All instructions of this user manual have to be observed to ensure intended use.

• Any use beyond or other than the intended use is not covered by warranty and can present a danger. Any damage aris-ing from not intended use shall be solely the liability of the operator or user.

• The measurement is carried out without direct contact to the fluid in the pipe. The flow profile is not influenced.

• The transducers are fixed to the pipe using the supplied transducer mounting fixture.

• If an extension cable is required to connect the transducers to the transmitter, a junction box can be used (optional). Ob-serve the safety instructions in the user manual. For the technical data of the junction box see "Technical specification".

• Observe the operating conditions, e.g., environment, voltage ranges. For the technical data of the transmitter, transduc-ers and accessories see "Technical specification".

2.3 Not Intended UseNot intended use in terms of a misuse means:

• any work on the measuring equipment without observing all instructions in this user manual

• use of transmitter, transducer and accessories combinations not intended by FLEXIM

• installation of the transmitter, transducers and accessories in explosive atmospheres they are not approved for

• any work on the measuring equipment (e.g., installation, dismounting, connection, start-up, operation, service and main-tenance) carried out by unauthorized and untrained personnel

• storage, installation and operation of the measuring equipment outside the specified ambient conditions (see "Technical specification")

2.4 Safety Instructions for the UserAny work on the measuring equipment has to be carried out by authorized and suitably trained personnel. Observe the safety instructions in the user manual. For the technical data of the transmitter, transducers and accessories see "Techni-cal specification".

• Observe the safety and accident prevention regulations applicable on the site of operation.

• Only use the supplied mounting fixtures and transducers as well as the intended accessories.

• Always wear the required personal protective equipment.

2.5 Safety Instructions for the Operator• The operator shall qualify the personnel to perform their assigned tasks. They shall provide the required personal protec-

tive equipment and oblige the personnel to wear it. It is recommended to risk assess the workplace.

• Besides the safety instructions in this user manual, the health, safety and environment regulations applicable for the range of application of the transmitter, transducers and accessories have to be observed.

• With the exceptions stated in chapter 11, the measuring equipment is maintenance-free. Any components and spare parts may only be replaced by FLEXIM. The operator shall carry out periodic checks for changes or damages that can present a danger. If you have any questions, please contact FLEXIM.

• Observe the specifications for the installation and connection of the transmitter, transducers and accessories (see chap-ter 5 and 6).

2.6 Safety Instructions for Electrical Work• Prior to any work on the transmitter (e.g., installation, dismounting, connection, service and maintenance), the transmit-

ter has to be disconnected from the power supply. It is not sufficient to remove the internal fuse of the instrument (see section 6.3).

• Electrical work may only be carried out if there is enough space.

• Only open the transmitter in safe ambient conditions (e.g., air humidity < 90 %, no conductive pollution, no explosive at-mosphere). Otherwise, additional protective measures have to be taken.

• The degree of protection of the transmitter is only ensured if all cables are fitted tight using the cable glands and the housings are firmly screwed.

• The condition and tight fit of the electrical connections have to be checked at regular intervals.

• When connecting the transmitter to the power supply, an appropriate cutoff device according to IEC 60947-1 and IEC 60947-3 has to be installed as disconnector. The cutoff device has to disconnect all live wires. The ground conductor connection must not be interrupted. The cutoff device has to be easily accessible and clearly marked as a disconnector for the transmitter. It should be located near the transmitter.If the transmitter is used in an explosive atmosphere, the cutoff device has to be installed outside the explosive atmo-sphere. If this is not possible, it has to be installed in the least hazardous area.

• The connection may only be made to networks up to overvoltage category II. When connecting the inputs and outputs as well as the power supply, observe the installation instructions, in particular the terminal assignment.

• The front plate must not be removed (see Fig. 2.1). The transmitter does not contain any components to be maintained by the user. For repair and service work, please contact FLEXIM.

• Observe the safety and accident prevention regulations for electrical systems and equipment.

2.7 Safety Instructions for Transport• If you detect a transport damage when unpacking the delivery, please contact the supplier or FLEXIM immediately.

• The transmitter is a sensitive electronic measuring instrument. Avoid shocks or impacts.

• Handle the transducer cable with care. Avoid sharp bends or kinks. Observe the ambient conditions.

• Select a solid surface to put the transmitter, transducers and accessories on.

• The transmitter, transducers and accessories have to be properly packed for transport:

– Use, if possible, the original packaging by FLEXIM or an equivalent cardboard box.

– Position the transmitter, transducers and accessories in the middle of the cardboard box.

– Fill any voids with appropriate packaging material (e.g., paper, foam, bubble wrap).

– Protect the cardboard box against humidity.

2.8 Recommended Procedure in Hazardous Situations

Fire Fighting Measures

• If possible, disconnect the transmitter from the power supply.

• Prior to extinguishing, protect any electrical parts that are not affected by the fire (e.g., using a cover).

• Select a suitable extinguishing agent. Avoid, if possible, conductive extinguishing agents.

• Observe the applicable minimum distances. The minimum distances differ depending on the used extinguishing agent.

3 Handling

3.1 First InspectionThe measuring instrument has already been tested thoroughly at the factory. At delivery, proceed to a visual control to make sure that no damage has occurred during transportation.

Check that the specifications of the measuring instrument delivered correspond to the specifications given on the pur-chase order.

The type and the serial number of the transmitter are shown on the nameplate. The transducer type is printed on the trans-ducers.

3.2 General Precautions

FLUXUS is a precision measuring instrument and has to be handled with care. To obtain good measurement results and not damage the measuring instrument, it is important that great attention is paid to the instructions given in this user man-ual, particularly to the following points:

• Protect the transmitter from shocks.

• The housing may only be opened by authorized personnel. The degree of protection of the transmitter will only be en-sured if the front plate is tightly screwed to the housing.

• Keep the transducers clean. Manipulate the transducer cables with caution. Avoid excessive cable bend.

• Make sure to work under correct ambient and operating temperatures. The ambient temperature has to be within the op-erating temperature range of the transmitter and the transducers (see Technical Specification).

• Observe the degree of protection (see Technical Specification).

3.3 Cleaning• Clean the transmitter with a soft cloth. Do not use detergents.

• Remove traces of the coupling compound from the transducers with a soft paper towel.

4 Handling ConceptThe handling of the transmitter occurs via the keyboard.

By pressing keys or the following program branches are displayed consecutively:

•Parameter

•Measurement

•Options

•Spec. functions

The program branch is displayed between two arrows (see Fig. 4.1).

For the description of the different program branches, see Tab. 4.1.

When the transmitter is operated for the first time and connected to the power supply the program branch Parameter will be displayed. At each start-up the measured value will be displayed if the measurement was not stopped before discon-necting the transmitter from the power supply. If the measurement was stopped, the program branch Parameter will be indicated.

After starting the measurement the parameter settings or configuration of the outputs of the transmitter can be displayed without interrupting the measurement.

Several keys have multiple functions. They can be used for entering data, for navigating through scroll lists as well as for executing special functions (e.g., activation of the FastFood mode).

The command panel can be accessed by opening the front plate.

• Fix the instrument mounting plate (2) to the pipe using the shackles (1) (see Fig. 5.7).

• Tighten the nuts (3) to fix the transmitter with the shackle to the pipe.

Installation on a pipe > 2"

The pipe mounting kit is fixed to the pipe using tension straps.

• Fix the instrument mounting plate (2) to the pipe using the tension strap instead of the shackles (1).

FLUXUS F721 with aluminum housing

Installation on a 2" pipe

• Fix the wall mount (1) with 3 countersunk-head screws (2) and nuts (3) firmly to the instrument mounting plate (4) (see Fig. 5.8).

5.2 Transducers

5.2.1 Preparation

5.2.1.1 Selection of the Measuring Point

The correct selection of the measuring point is crucial for achieving reliable measurement results and a high measurement accuracy.

A measurement on a pipe is possible if:

• the ultrasound propagates with a sufficiently high amplitude (see user manual – Advanced Functions, section 3.1)

• the flow profile is fully developed (see user manual – Advanced Functions, section 3.2)

The correct selection of the measuring point and the correct transducer positioning guarantees that the sound signal will be received under optimum conditions and evaluated correctly.

Because of the variety of applications and the different factors that influence the measurement, there is no standard solu-tion for the transducer positioning. The measurement is influenced by the following factors:

– diameter, material, lining, wall thickness and shape of the pipe

– fluid

– gas bubbles in the fluid

• Avoid measuring points in the vicinity of deformations or defects of the pipe and in the vicinity of welds.

• Avoid measuring points with deposit formation in the pipe.

• Make sure that the pipe surface at the selected measuring point is even. The pipe may not be corrugated.

• The ambient temperature at the measuring point has to be within the operating temperature range of the transducers (see Technical Specification).

• Select the location of the transmitter within the range of the cable of the measuring point.

• The ambient temperature at the measuring point has to be within the operating temperature range of the transmitter and the sensor (see Technical Specification).

• If the measuring point is within an explosive atmosphere, the danger zone and gases that may be present have to be de-termined. The transducers and the transmitter have to be appropriate for these conditions.

5.2.1.2 Preparation of the Pipe

• The pipe has to be stable. It has to be able to withstand the pressure exerted by the transducer mounting fixture.

Rust, paint or other deposits on the pipe absorb the sound signal. A good acoustic contact between the pipe and the trans-ducers is obtained as follows:

• Clean the pipe at the selected measuring point:

– If present, the paint layer has to be smoothed by sanding. The paint does not need to be removed completely.

– Remove any rust or loose paint.

• Use coupling foil or apply a bead of acoustic coupling compound along the center line of the contact surface of the trans-ducers.

• Observe that there must be no air pockets between the transducer contact surface and the pipe wall.

• higher accuracy of measurement because the accuracy increases with the number of sound paths

• The sound beam plane (see user manual - Advanced Functions, section 2.2.1) has an angle of 90° to the elbow plane. The elbow is upstream of the measuring point.

• The sound beam plane (see user manual - Advanced Functions, section 2.2.1) has an angle of 90° ± 45° to the elbow plane. The elbow is upstream of the measuring point.

With measurements in both directions With measurements in the reflection arrangement with 2 beams and -2 planes

• The sound beam plane (see user manual - Advanced Functions, section 2.2.1) is selected according to the nearest elbow (horizontal or vertical, depending on the pipe orientation - see above).

• The 2 sound beam planes (see user manual - Advanced Functions, section 2.2.1) have an angle of 45° to the el-bow plane. The elbow is upstream of the measuring point.

• With horizontal pipes, the transducers are mounted on the upper half of the pipe.

5.2.2.1 Orientation of the Transducers and Determination of the Transducer Distance

If the transducer mounting has been done properly the engravings on the transducers form an arrow (see Fig. 5.10). The transducer cables show in opposite directions.

The transducer distance is the distance between the inner edges of the transducers.

Installation

When measuring in reflection arrangement, the transducer mounting fixtures are mounted on the same side of the pipe (see Fig. 5.12).

When measuring in diagonal arrangement, the transducer mounting fixtures are mounted on the opposite sides of the pipe (see Fig. 5.13).

When measuring in reflection arrangement and small transducer distance, only one transducer mounting fixture has to be mounted (see Tab. 5.1).

In the following, the mounting of two transducer mounting fixtures in reflection arrangement is described (one transducer mounting fixture for each transducer).

Band clamp clasp

The clasp is fixed to the tension strap (see Fig. 5.15).

Quick release clasp

The clasp is fixed to the tension strap (see Fig. 5.16).

• Cut the tension straps to length (pipe circumference + at least 120 mm).

Ratchet clasp

• Cut the tension strap to length (pipe circumference + at least 120 mm).

• Insert approx. 100 mm of the tension strap into parts 1 and 2 of the clasp (see Fig. 5.17 a).

• Bend the tension strap.

• Insert the tension strap into part 1 of the ratchet clasp (see Fig. 5.17 b).

• Tighten the tension strap.

• Repeat the steps for the second tension strap.

Step 3: Fixing the Tension Strap to the Pipe

One tension strap is fixed to the pipe (see Fig. 5.18). The second tension strap is mounted later.

Select the installation instructions of the delivered clasp:

Band clamp clasp

• Insert the tension strap into the tension strap clamp (see Fig. 5.19).

• Position the clasp and the tension strap clamp on the pipe (see Fig. 5.18).On a horizontal pipe, mount the tension strap clamp on the side of the pipe, if possible.

• Place the tension strap around the pipe and insert it into the clasp (see Fig. 5.21).

• Tighten the tension strap.

• Tighten the screw of the clasp.

Quick release clasp

• Insert the tension strap into the tension strap clamp and the metal spring (see Fig. 5.19 and Fig. 5.20).

• Position the clasp, the metal spring and the tension strap clamp on the pipe (see Fig. 5.18):

– On a horizontal pipe, mount the tension strap clamp on the side of the pipe, if possible.

– Mount the metal spring on the opposite side of the tension strap clamp.

• Place the tension strap around the pipe and insert it into the clasp (see Fig. 5.22).

• Tighten the tension strap.

• Tighten the screw of the clasp.

Ratchet clasp

• Insert the tension strap into the tension strap clamp and the metal spring (see Fig. 5.23). It is not necessary to mount the met-al spring:

– on steel pipes or

– on pipes with an outer pipe diameter < 80 mm or

– on pipes that are not subjected to significant temperature fluctuations.

• Position the clasp, the metal spring (if necessary) and the tension strap clamp on the pipe (see Fig. 5.18).

– on a horizontal pipe, mount the tension strap clamp on the side of the pipe, if possible

– mount the metal spring on the opposite side of the tension strap clamp (if necessary).

• Place the tension strap around the pipe and insert it into part 3 of the clasp (see Fig. 5.24).

• Tighten the tension strap.

Step 4: Fixing the Rail to the Pipe

• Place one tension strap clamp in the rail (see tension strap clamp 1 in Fig. 5.25). Observe the orientation of the tension strap clamp.

• Tighten the nut of tension strap clamp 1 slightly.

• Screw the rail to tension strap clamp 2 (see Fig. 5.26).

• Tighten the nut of tension strap clamp 2, but not too firmly in order not to damage the tension strap.

• Select the installation instructions that correspond to the delivered clasp:

Band clamp clasp

• Insert the tension strap into tension strap clamp 1 (see Fig. 5.27).

• Place the tension strap around the pipe and insert it into the clasp (see Fig. 5.28).

• Tighten the tension strap.

• Tighten the screw of the clasp.

• Tighten the nut of tension strap clamp 1, but not too firmly in order not to damage the tension strap (see Fig. 5.27).

Quick release clasp

• Insert the tension strap into tension strap clamp 1 and the metal spring (see Fig. 5.29 and Fig. 5.27).

• Place the tension strap around the pipe and insert it into the clasp.

• Place the metal spring on the opposite side of tension strap clamp 1.

• Tighten the tension strap.

• Tighten the screw of the clasp.

• Tighten the nut of tension strap clamp 1, but not too firmly in order not to damage the tension strap (see Fig. 5.27).

Ratchet clasp

• Insert the tension strap into tension strap clamp 1 and the metal spring (see Fig. 5.27 and Fig. 5.30).It is not necessary to mount the metal spring:

– on steel pipes or

– on pipes with an outer pipe diameter < 80 mm or

– on pipes that are not subjected to significant temperature fluctuations.

• Position the clasp, the metal spring (if necessary) and tension strap clamp 1 on the pipe. Mount the metal spring on the opposite side of the tension strap clamp.

• Place the tension strap around the pipe and insert it into part 3 of the clasp (see Fig. 5.31).

• Tighten the tension strap.

• Cut off the protruding tension strap (see Fig. 5.31).

• Tighten the screw of the clasp.

• Tighten the nut of tension strap clamp 1, but not too firmly in order not to damage the tension strap (see Fig. 5.27).

Step 5: Installation of the transducers in Variofix L

• Press the transducers firmly on the transducer clamping fixture in the covers until the transducers are firmly fixed (one transducer in each cover). The transducer cables show in opposite directions (see Fig. 5.33).

• Adjust the transducer distance displayed by the transmitter (see section 8.3 and Fig. 5.34).

• Fix the cables of the transducers with the strain relief clamp to protect them from mechanical strain (see Fig. 5.34).

• Put coupling foil (or some coupling compound for a short-term installation) on the contact surface of the transducers. The coupling foil can be fixed to the contact surface with a small amount of the coupling compound.

• Put the covers with the transducers on the rail.

• Correct the transducer distance, if necessary (see section 8.3).

When measuring in reflection arrangement, one transducer mounting fixture is mounted on the side of the pipe (see Fig. 5.37).

When measuring in diagonal arrangement, two transducer mounting fixtures are mounted on the opposite sides of the pipe (see Fig. 5.38).

In the following, the installation of one transducer mounting fixture is described (transducers in reflection arrangement).

• Cut the tension strap to length (pipe circumference + at least 120 mm).

• Insert approx. 100 mm of the tension strap into one of the slots of the tension strap clamp and bend it (see Fig. 5.41).

• If necessary, insert the long end of the tension strap into the metal spring (see Fig. 5.42). It is not neces-sary to mount the metal spring:

– on steel pipes or

– on pipes with an outer pipe diameter < 80 mm or

– on pipes that are not subjected to significant temperature fluctuations.

• Place the tension strap around the pipe (see Fig. 5.43).

• Position the metal spring (if mounted) and the tension strap clamp (see Fig. 5.43):

– On a horizontal pipe, mount the tension strap clamp on the side of the pipe, if possible.

– Mount the metal spring (if necessary) on the opposite side of the tension strap clamp.

• Insert the long end of the tension strap into the second slot of the tension strap clamp (see Fig. 5.43 a).

• Tighten the tension strap and bend it.

• Bend both ends of the tension strap (see Fig. 5.43 b).

• Repeat the steps for the second tension strap. Position the tension strap at the distance s (see Fig. 5.43).

• Put the rail on the tension strap clamps.

• Use the screws to fix the rail to the tension strap clamps (see Fig. 5.44).

• Tighten the screws.

Installation of the rail with the ratchet clasp

• Cut the tension strap to length (pipe circumference + at least 120 mm).

• Insert approx. 100 mm of the tension strap into parts 1 and 2 of the ratchet clasp (see Fig. 5.45 a).

Step 3: Installation of the Transducers in Variofix C

• Put coupling foil (or some coupling compound for a short-term installation) on the contact surface of the transducers. The coupling foil can be fixed to the contact surface with a small amount of the coupling compound.

• Position the transducers on the rail in such way that the engravings on the transducers form an arrow. The transducer cables show in opposite directions (see Fig. 5.50).

• Adjust the transducer distance displayed by the transmitter (see section 8.3 and Fig. 5.50).

• Slide the spring clips on the transducers (see Fig. 5.51).

• Fix the transducers by tightening the tensioning screws slightly. The end of the screw has to be placed above the hole in the transducer (see Fig. 5.50).

• Correct the transducer distance, if necessary (see section 8.3).

• Tighten the tensioning screw.

• Fix the spacing element on the rail to mark the transducer position (see Fig. 5.50).

• Use a cable tie to fix the transducer cables in order to protect them from mechanical strain (see Fig. 5.51).

• Put the cover on the rail (see Fig. 5.52).

• Tighten the screws on both sides of the cover.

The cover can be removed from the mounted transducer mounting fixture Variofix C as follows:

• Use a lever tool to remove the cover.

• Insert the lever tool in one of the four openings of the cover (see Fig. 5.53).

• Press the lever tool against the fixture.

• Bend the cover outwards and release it from the anchoring.

• Repeat the steps for the other three openings.

• Remove the cover from the rail.

5.2.2.4 Installation with Mounting Shoe and Band Clamp Clasp

• Insert the tension strap into the groove on the upper side of the mounting shoe (see Fig. 5.54).

• Position the mounting shoe and the clasp on the pipe. On horizontal pipes, mount the mounting shoe on the side of the pipe, if possible.

• Place the tension strap around the pipe and insert it into the clasp.

• Tighten the tension strap.

• Tighten the screw of the clasp.

• Repeat the steps for fixing the second mounting shoe. Adjust the displayed transducer distance between the inner edges of the mounting shoes by means of the measuring tape.

• Tighten the screws of the clasps.

• Insert the transducers into the mounting shoes. Press the transducer firmly on the pipe. There should be no air pockets between transducer surface and pipe wall. Tighten the screw of the mounting shoe.

Note! The clasp has to be completely in contact with the pipe to ensure a good fixation.

5.3 Temperature Probes

5.3.1 Preparation of the Pipe

The pipe has to be stable. It has to be able to withstand the pressure exerted by the mounting fixture of the temperature probe.

Rust, paint or other deposits on the pipe isolate the temperature at the measuring point. A good thermal contact between pipe and temperature probe is obtained as follows:

• Clean the pipe at the selected measuring point:

– Remove any insulation material, rust or loose paint.

– If present, the paint layer has to be smoothed by sanding. The paint does not need to be removed completely.

• Use thermal conductivity foil or apply a layer of thermal conductivity paste or coupling compound to the contact surface of the temperature probe. Observe the corresponding operating temperature range.

• Observe that there must be no air pockets between the contact surface of the temperature probe and the pipe wall.

For the installation of the temperature probe (response time 50 s), see section 5.3.2.

For the installation of the temperature probe (response time 8 s), see section 5.3.3.

5.3.2 Installation of the Temperature Probe (Response Time 50 s)

Select the installation instructions of the delivered clasp:

• for the installation with a clasp see section 5.3.2.1

• for the installation with a FLEXIM clasp see section 5.3.2.2

• for the installation with a quick release clasp see section 5.3.2.3

5.3.2.1 Installation with a Clasp

• Cut the tension strap to length (pipe circumference + at least 120 mm).

• Make sure that part (2) of the clasp is on top of part (1) (see Fig. 5.55 a). The hooks of part (2) have to be on the outer side of the clasp.

• Pull approx. 20 mm of the tension strap through the slot of the clasp to fix the clasp to the tension strap (see Fig. 5.55 b).

• Bend the end of the tension strap.

• Position the temperature probe on the pipe (see Fig. 5.56).

• Place the tension strap around the temperature probe and the pipe.

• Insert the tension strap through the parts (2) and (1) of the clasp.

• Pull the tension strap firmly and engage it in the inner hooks of the clasp.

• Tighten the screws of the clasps.

5.3.2.2 Installation with a FLEXIM Clasp

• Cut the tension strap to length (pipe circumference + at least 120 mm).

• Insert approx. 20 mm of the tension strap into the slot of the clasp (see Fig. 5.57).

• Bend the end of the tension strap.

• Position the temperature probe on the pipe (see Fig. 5.56).

• Place the tension strap around the temperature probe and the pipe.

• Insert the tension strap through the parts (2) and (1) of the clasp.

Attention! Observe the "Safety Instructions for the Use in Explosive Atmosphere" (see document SIFLUXUS).

Note! In case of great temperature differences, it is recommended to thermally insulate the temperature probe from the environment.

• Pull the tension strap firmly and engage it in the inner hooks of the clasp.

• Tighten the screws of the clasp.

5.3.2.3 Installation with a Quick Release Clasp

• Cut the tension strap to length (pipe circumference + at least 120 mm).

• Position the temperature probe on the pipe (see Fig. 5.56).

• Place the tension strap around the temperature probe and the pipe.

• Insert the tension strap into the clasp (see Fig. 5.58).

• Tighten the tension strap.

• Tighten the screw of the clasp.

5.3.3 Installation of the Temperature Probe (Response Time 8 s)

• Fix the protection plate and the insulation foam to the temperature probe (see Fig. 5.59).

• Take the spring end of the ball chain and insert the last ball into one of the slots on the upper side of the temperature probe (see Fig. 5.60).

• Place the chain around the pipe. Tighten the chain and insert it into the other slot of the temperature probe.

It is recommended to run the cables from the measuring point to the transmitter before connecting the transducers to avoid load on the connectors.

• Remove the blind plug for the connection of the transducer cable (see Fig. 6.2).

• Remove the blind plug for the connection of the transducer cable (see Fig. 6.3).

• Open the cable gland of the transducer cable. The compression part remains in the cap nut.

• Push the transducer cable through the cap nut and the compression part.

• Prepare the transducer cable.

• Cut the external shield and brush it back over the compression part.

• Screw the gasket ring side of the basic part tightly into the housing of the transmitter.

• Insert the transducer cable into the housing.

• Fix the cable gland by screwing the cap nut onto the basic part.

• Connect the leads of the transducer cable to the terminals of the transmitter (see Fig. 6.1, Fig. 6.2 and Tab. 6.1).

6.1.4 Connection of the Extension Cable to the Junction Box

6.1.4.1 Without Potential Separation (Standard)

The connection of an extension cables to a junction box without potential separation ensures that transducer, junction box and transmitter are on the same potential. The extension cable should always be connected that way especially if power cables are laid near the extension cable.

See section 6.1.4.2 if earthing on the same potential cannot be ensured.

• Remove the blind plug for the connection of the extension cable (see Fig. 6.13).

• Open the cable gland of the extension cable. The compression part remains in the cap nut.

• Push the extension cable through the cap nut and the compression part.

• Prepare the extension cable.

• Cut the external shield and brush it back over the compression part.

• Screw the gasket ring side of the basic part into the junction box.

• Insert the extension cable into the junction box.

• Fix the cable gland by screwing the cap nut onto the basic part.

• Connect the extension cable to the terminals of the transmitter (see Fig. 6.13 and Tab. 6.9).

6.1.4.2 With Potential Separation

If earthing on the same potential cannot be ensured e.g., in measurement arrangements with long extension cables, ex-tension cables and junctions boxes have to be insulated from each other. The junction box and the transducers have to be on the same potential. Thus, no transient currents can enter the transmitter via the extension cable.

• Remove the blind plug for the connection of the extension cable (see Fig. 6.14).

• Open the cable gland of the extension cable. The compression part remains in the cap nut.

• Push the extension cable through the cap nut, the compression part and the basic part of the cable gland.

• Insert the extension cable into the junction box.

• Prepare the extension cable.

• Cut the outer shield and brush it back.

• Pull the extension cable back until the brushed back external shield is below the shield terminal (see Fig. 6.14). The ex-tension cable must remain completely insulated up to the shield terminal.

• Screw the gasket ring side of the basic part into the junction box.

• Fix the cable gland by screwing the cap nut onto the basic part.

• Fix the extension cable and the external shield to the shield terminal.

• Connect the extension cable to the terminals of the transmitter (see Fig. 6.14 and Tab. 6.10).

Note! For the installation of transducers to pipes with a cathodic corrosion protection see document TI-FLUXUS_GalvSep.

6.2 Sensor Module (SENSPROM)

The sensor module contains important transducer data for the operation of the transmitter with the transducers.

If transducers are replaced or added, the sensor module has to be replaced or added.

The sensor module is connected to the terminals of the transmitter (see Fig. 6.15).

• Disconnect the power supply from the transmitter.

• Insert the sensor module into the terminal strip for sensor modules (see Fig. 6.1 and Fig. 6.15). The slots X2 are assigned to the transducers of measuring channel A, the slots X3 are assigned to the transducers of measuring channel B.

• Connect the transmitter to the power supply.

• Enter all parameters of the program branch Parameter.

• Start the measurement.

Note! The serial number of sensor module and transducer have to be identical. A wrong or incorrectly con-nected sensor module will lead to incorrect measured values or to a measurement failure.

6.3 Power Supply

• Connect the external protective earth to the equipotential bonding terminal on the housing of the transmitter (see Fig. 6.16). It must always to be connected.

• Connect the power cable to the transmitter.

For the connection of the power cable to the transmitter, see box Cable Connection, Fig. 6.18 and Tab. 6.11.

Attention! Observe the "Safety Instructions for the Use in Explosive Atmosphere" (see document SIFLUXUS).

Attention! According to IEC 61010-1:2010, a switch has to be provided near the measuring instrument in the building installation, easily accessible for the user and marked as a disconnection device for the mea-suring instrument.

If the transmitter FLUXUS F721**-A20*S is used in an explosive atmosphere, the switch should be installed outside the explosive atmosphere. If this is not possible, the switch should be installed in the least hazardous area.

Attention! The degree of protection of the transmitter will only be guaranteed if the power cable fits firmly and tightly in the cable gland.

If the polarity of the current source is inversed, only the sign of the measured current will change. For the assignment and the activation of the current input see user manual – Advanced Functions, chapter 6.

Connection of a Passive Current Source

For the connection of the input cable to the transmitter, see box Cable Connection p. 54, Fig. 6.20 and Tab. 6.14.

At full load (20 mA), a voltage of 22.9 V DC is available for the supply of the passive current source.

For the assignment and the activation of the current input see user manual – Advanced Functions, chapter 6.

6.5.2 Binary Input

The transmitter can be equipped with 1 or 4 binary inputs. Binary inputs are able to process physical quantities with short pulse times.

Via the binary inputs, it is possible to remotely trigger some functions of the transmitter (see user manual – Advanced Functions, section 8.6).

For the connection of the input cable to the transmitter, see box Cable Connection p. 54, Fig. 6.19 and Tab. 6.15).

6.6 Temperature Sensor

Temperature probes Pt100/Pt1000 (4-wire) can be connected to the inputs of the transmitter (optional).

For the assignment and the activation of the temperature inputs see user manual – Advanced Functions, chapter 6.

6.6.1 Direct Connection of the Temperature Probe

• Remove the blind plug for the connection of the temperature probe (see Fig. 6.20).

• Open the cable gland of the temperature probe. The compression part remains in the cap nut (see Fig. 6.21 and Tab. 6.16).

• Push the cable of the temperature probe through the cap nut, the compression part, the basic part, and the reducer.

• Prepare the cable.

• Insert the cable into the housing.

• Screw the gasket ring side of the reducer tightly into the housing of the transmitter.

• Tightly screw the basic part into the reducer.

• Fix the cable gland by screwing the cap nut onto the basic part.

• Connect the temperature probe to the terminals of the transmitter (see Fig. 6.20 and Tab. 6.17).

6.6.2 Connection with an Extension Cable

• Remove the left blind plug for the connection of the extension cable (see Fig. 6.20).

• Open the cable gland of the extension cable. The compression part remains in the cap nut (see Fig. 6.21 and Tab. 6.16).

• Push the extension cable through the cap nut, the compression part, the basic part, and the reducer.

• Prepare the extension cable.

• Insert the extension cable into the housing.

• Screw the gasket ring side of the reducer tightly into the housing of the transmitter.

• Tightly screw the basic part into the reducer.

• Fix the cable gland by screwing the cap nut onto the basic part.

• Connect the connectors of the extension cable and the temperature probe.

• Connect the extension cable to the terminals of the transmitter (see Fig. 6.20 and Tab. 6.18).

Connection to the Transmitter

• Fix the cable gland by screwing the cap nut onto the basic part.

• Connect the extension cable to the terminals of the transmitter (see Fig. 6.20 and Tab. 6.18).

Connection of the Extension Cable to the Junction Box

• Remove the blind plug in the middle for the connection of the extension cable (see Fig. 6.23).

• Open the cable gland of the extension cable (see Fig. 6.21 and Tab. 6.16). The compression part remains in the cap nut.

• Push the extension cable through the cap nut and the compression part.

• Prepare the extension cable.

• Cut the external shield and brush it back over the compression part.

• Screw the gasket ring side of the reducer into the junction box (see Fig. 6.21).

• Tightly screw the basic part into the reducer.

• Insert the extension cable into the junction box.

• Fix the cable gland by screwing the cap nut onto the basic part.

• Connect the extension cable to the terminals of the transmitter (see Fig. 6.23 and Tab. 6.19).

Connection of the Temperature Probe to the Junction Box

7 Start-up of the Transmitter

7.1 Switching OnAs soon as the transmitter is connected to the power supply, the menu is displayed with the default language. The lan-guage of the display can be set (see section 7.4).

For the operation of the transmitter see chapter 4.

If the transmitter was switched off during the measurement, the message Measurement started on active chan-nels will be displayed after connecting the transmitter to the power supply. The measurement is carried out with the pa-rameters last set.

By pressing key in the program branch Measurement the measurement can be stopped via the list item Stop mea-surement or the actual parameter setting can be displayed in Show parameters.

7.2 Operation State Indication

The operation state is indicated by LEDs (see Fig. 7.1).

Note! Parameters cannot be changed during the measurement. If the parameters are to be changed, the measurement has to be stopped.

7.3 Program BranchesThe following contains an overview of the program branches. For a detailed overview of the menu structure see annex A.

7.4 Language Selection

The transmitter can be operated in various languages:

• Select the program branch Spec. functions\System settings\Language

• Select the language in the scroll list.

• Press ENTER.

After selecting the language the menu is displayed in the selected language. The selected language remains activated when the transmitter is switched off and on again. After an initialization of the transmitter, the language is reset to the de-fault language.

The selection of the language can also be performed via the input of a HotCode (see user manual – Advanced Functions, section 9.7).

7.5 InitializationDuring an initialization (INIT) of the transmitter, all settings are reset to the factory default settings.

Stored data are deleted.

Proceed as follows to execute an initialization:

• While switching on the transmitter: keep keys and C pressed.

• During the operation of the transmitter: press keys , C and ENTER at the same time. A RESET is executed. Release only key ENTER. Keep keys and C pressed.

After the initialization has been executed, the message Initialization activated is displayed.

7.6 Time and Date

The transmitter has a battery-powered clock. Measured values are automatically stored with the date and time.

• Select Time/date.

The adjusted time is displayed.

• Enter the current time above the numeric field.

• Press ENTER.

The adjusted date is displayed.

• Enter the current date above the numeric field.

• Press ENTER.

7.7 Instrument Information

• Select Device info.

• Press ENTER.

• Press key or to scroll through the list.

• Quit the menu by pressing key .

The following information relating to the transmitter are displayed:

8.1 Parameter Input

The pipe and fluid parameters are entered for the selected mea-suring point. The parameter ranges are limited by the technical characteristics of the transducers and the transmitter.

• Select the program branch Parameter.

• Press ENTER.

• Select the channel for which the parameters are to be entered (here: channel A).

• Press ENTER.

The display will not be indicated if the transmitter has only one measuring channel.

8.1.1 Transducer Selection

• The transducer connected to the transmitter (here: CDP2E52), is displayed.

• Press ENTER.

The display will only be indicated if transducer and sensor mod-ule are connected to the transmitter.

The parameter input can also be carried out without connected transducer or sensor module.

• Select Connected transd. if neither transducer nor sensor module are connected to the transmitter.

• Press ENTER.

The display will not be indicated if a transducer and a sensor module are connected to a transmitter.

• Select Select transd. to use the standard transducer stored in the transmitter.

• Select the transducer.

• Press ENTER.

The display will not be indicated if a transducer and a sensor module are connected to a transmitter.

8.1.2 Input of the Pipe Parameters

Outer Pipe Diameter

• Enter the outer pipe diameter.

• Press ENTER.

It is possible to enter the pipe circumference instead of the outer pipe diameter.

Pipe Circumference

• Activate the input of the pipe circumference (see user manual – Advanced Functions, section 9.1).

• Press the key in the menu item Outer diameter. The menu item Pipe circumf. is displayed.

• Enter the pipe circumference.

• Press ENTER.

If the outer pipe diameter is to be entered, press key . The menu item Outer diameter is displayed.

Pipe Material

The pipe material has to be selected to be able to determine the corresponding sound speed.

The sound speeds for the materials in the scroll list are stored in the transmitter.

• Select the pipe material.

• Press ENTER.

• If the material is not in the scroll list, select Other material.

• Press ENTER.

Sound Speed of the Pipe Material

• Enter the sound speed of the pipe material.

• Press ENTER.

This display will only be indicated if Other material is selected.

For the sound speed of some materials see user manual – Advanced Functions, annex A.

Roughness of the Pipe Material

The flow profile of the fluid is influenced by the roughness of the inner pipe wall.

The roughness is used for the calculation of the profile correction factor.

In most cases, the pipe roughness cannot be determined exactly and consequently need to be estimated.

• If the pipe has a lining, press ENTER. The roughness of the lining will be included in the calculation.

• If the pipe does not have a lining, enter the roughness of the pipe material. Press ENTER.

This display will only be indicated if Other material is selected.

For the roughness of some materials see user manual – Advanced Functions, annex A.

Wall Thickness

• Enter the pipe wall thickness.

• Press ENTER.

Sound Speed of the Fluid

The sound speed of the fluid is used for the calculation of the transducer distance. The exact value of the sound speed for a fluid is not always known. Therefore, a range of possible values for the sound speed has to be entered.

• Enter the average sound speed of the fluid.

• Press ENTER.

This display will only be indicated if Other fluid is selected.

Sound Speed Range of the Fluid

• Select Auto if the range around the average sound speed has to be set to ±10 % of the entered sound speed.

• Select User defined if the area around the average sound speed has to be entered.

• Press ENTER.

This display will only be indicated if Other fluid is selected.

• Enter the range around the average sound speed of the fluid.

• Press ENTER.

This display will only be indicated if User defined is selected.

Kinematic Viscosity of the Fluid

The kinematic viscosity influences the flow profile of the fluid. The value is included in the profile correction (see user man-ual – Advanced Functions, section 4.2)

• Enter the kinematic viscosity of the fluid.

• Press ENTER.

This display will only be indicated if Other fluid is selected.

Fluid Density

The density is used to calculate the mass flow.

If the mass flow is not measured, an input is unnecessary. The default value can be used.

• Enter the operating density of the fluid.

• Press ENTER.

This display will only be indicated if Other fluid is selected.

Fluid Temperature

At the beginning of the measurement the fluid temperature is used for the interpolation of the sound speed and therefore for the calculation of the recommended transducer distance.

During the measurement, the fluid temperature is used for the interpolation of the density and the viscosity of the fluid.

The value entered here is used for the calculations if the fluid temperature is not measured and fed into the transmitter via an input.

• Enter the fluid temperature. The value has to be within the operating temperature range of the transducers.

• Press ENTER.

Fluid Pressure

The fluid pressure is used for the interpolation of the sound speed and the compressibility coefficient of the gas.

• Enter the fluid pressure.

• Press ENTER.

This display will only be indicated if in Spec. functions\Dialogs/Menus the menu item Edit fluid pres. or inSpec. functions\Measurement\Measurem. modes the list item Gas measurement is selected.

8.2 Measurement Settings

• Select the program branch Options.

• Select the channel for which the physical quantity is to be entered (here: channel A).

8.2.1 Selection of the Physical Quantity

• Select Phys. quantity.

8.2.2 Selection of the Unit of Measurement

For the selected physical quantity (except for the sound speed), a list with the available units of measurement is dis-played. The unit of measurement selected previously is dis-played first.

• Select the unit of measurement of the physical quantity.

• Press ENTER.

8.2.3 Input of the Damping Factor

Each displayed measured value is an average of the last x seconds, with x being the damping factor. If 0 s is entered as damping factor, no average will be generated.

The value of 10 s is appropriate for normal flow conditions. If the values fluctuate strongly, caused by a higher dynamic flow, a higher damping factor can be very useful.

• Enter the damping factor.

• Press ENTER.

8.2.4 Input of the Error Value Delay

The error value delay is the time interval after which the error value is transmitted to the output (see Tab. 8.3).

This display will only be indicated if in Spec. functions\Dialogs/Menus\Error val. delay the list item Edit is selected.

If the error value delay is not entered, the damping factor will be used.

• Enter a value for the error delay.

• Press ENTER.

• Press key to return to the program branch Options.

8.2.5 Configuration of the Output

If the transmitter is equipped with outputs, they have to be configured. In principle, the measured value or the status value of the selected physical quantity can be transmitted via the individual outputs.

In the following the configuration of the current output is described.

The configuration of voltage and frequency outputs is carried out analogous.

• Select the program branch Options.

• Press ENTER.

Selection of the Measuring Channel

• Select the channel to be assigned to an output (here: channel A).

• Press ENTER.

This display will not be indicated if the transmitter has only one measuring channel.

Assignment of an Output

• Select Outputs.

• Press ENTER.

• Select the output to be assigned to the channel (here: Current I1 (--)).

• Press ENTER.

The scroll list contains all outputs available in the transmitter:

– current IX (--)

– voltage UX (--)

– binary BX (--)

– frequency FX (--)

If the output has already been assigned to a channel, it is displayed as follows: Current I1 (A:).

• Select Yes to change the settings for an already assigned output or to assign a new output.

• Select No to cancel the assignment and to return to the previous menu item.

• Press ENTER.

Assignment of a Source Item

A source item has to be assigned to each selected output.

• Select the source item whose measured value, status value or event value is to be transmitted to the output (see Tab. 8.1).

Adjustment of the Transducer Distance

The transducer distance is the distance between the inner edges of the transducers (see section 5.2.2)

In case of a measurement in diagonal mode on very small pipes, a negative transducer distance is possible.

• Mount the transducers on the pipe adjusting the transducer distance. For fixing the transducers see section 5.2.2.

• Press ENTER.

Fine Adjustment of the Transducer Distance

The bar graph AMP= displays the amplitude of the received signal (see Fig. 8.1).

The bar graph SCNR= displays the ratio useful signal to correlated disturbance signal.

• Shift one of the transducers slightly within the range of the recommended transducer distance until the bar graph reach-es the max. length.

• In case of large deviations of the diagnostic values (see Tab. 8.5), check if the entered parameters are correct or repeat the measurement at a different point on the pipe.

• Press ENTER.

Input of the Transducer Distance

After the precise positioning of the transducers, the recommended transducer distance is displayed in brackets again.

• Measure the transducer distance.

• Enter the measured transducer distance.

• Press ENTER.

The measurement is started. The measured value is displayed.

8.4 Displaying the Measured ValuesThe measured values are displayed during the measurement as follows:

Additional physical quantities can be displayed during the measurement by pressing key or (see Fig. 8.2).

• Press key to display the measured values in line 5. The designation of the physical quantity is displayed in line 4 by pressing key for several seconds.

• Press key to display the measured values in line 4. The designation of the physical quantity is displayed in line 5 by pressing key for several seconds.

Toggling Between the Channels

If the measurement has been started on several channels, the display of the measured values can be adapted during the measurement as follows:

AutoMux mode

In the AutoMux mode the measured values of all activated channels (measuring and calculation channels) are displayed consecutively. The next active channel is selected after min. 3 s. The toggle time can be changed in the menu item Spe-cial Functions\Dialogs/Menus\Toggle time (see user manual - Advanced Functions, section 9.1).

HumanMux mode

In the HumanMux mode the measured values of one channel are displayed. The measurement on the other channels is continued.

• Press key to display the next activated channel. The measured values for the selected channel are displayed.

Each measurement starts in the AutoMux mode. Press key to toggle between the modes (see section 8.7).

Status Line

Important data of the ongoing measurement are displayed in the status line. Thus, the quality and precision can be esti-mated. Press key to scroll to the status line during the measurement.

By pressing key during the measurement, it is possible to scroll to the display of the transducer distance.

The recommended transducer distance will be displayed in brackets (41.1 mm). The measured transducer distance (here: 41.5 mm) will be displayed.

The recommended transducer distance might change during measurement (e.g., due to temperature fluctuations).

A deviation from the optimum transducer distance (here: -0.4 mm) will be compensated internally.

Storage Rate

The storage rate indicates the interval how often the measured values are transmitted or stored. If a time is defined to start storing the measured values, a storage rate has to be entered.

• Select in the program branch Spec. functions\.Data logger the menu item Configuration.

• Press ENTER until the menu item Storage rate is displayed.

• Select a storage rate in the scroll list.

• Press ENTER.

• If User defined is selected, enter the storage rate.

• Press ENTER.

Starting Time – Event-Based

If it is necessary to start the storing of measured values at a specific event, select Event-based as starting time. The event is signalized via an input (see user man-ual - Advanced Functions, chapter 6) or event trigger (see user manual - Advanced Functions, chapter 8.7). All configured inputs and event triggers are displayed in the scroll list.

• Select the input or event trigger which is to signalize the event.

• Press ENTER.

The storage rate indicates the interval how often the measured values are transmit-ted or stored.

• Select the storage rate for the measured values to be stored from the scroll list if the event is not triggered.

• Press ENTER.

• Select Off if no measured values are to be stored as long as the event is not trig-gered.

The Stor. rate FastF is the storage rate at which the measured values are stored in the FastFood mode.

• Select in the program branch Spec. functions\Data logger the menu item Configuration.

• Press ENTER until the menu item Stor. rate FastF is displayed.

• Enter a value for the Stor. rate FastF in ms.

• Press ENTER.

Ringbuffer

The activation of the ringbuffer influences the storing of measured values once the data logger is full.

If the ringbuffer is activated, the oldest measured values of the current series of measured values will be overwritten. Only the storage place that was free during the activation will be used by the ringbuffer. If more storage place is necessary, measured values in the data logger should previously be deleted.

• Select in the program branch Spec. functions\Data logger the menu item Configuration.

• Press ENTER until the menu item Ringbuffer is displayed.

• Select On if the ringbuffer has to be activated.

• Press ENTER.

If the ringbuffer is not activated and the data logger is full the storing of measured values will be terminated.

• Select Off if the ringbuffer has to be deactivated.

10 Transmission of DataAll data and parameters relevant for the transmitter can be transmitted to a PC. The transmission of data occurs via the in-terfaces of the transmitter.

10.1 Interfaces of the Transmitter• Select in the program branch Spec. functions the menu item Communication.

• Press ENTER.

All interfaces existing in the transmitter are listed.

The following figure provides an overview how communication takes place via the respective interfaces.

For the description of the communication protocols of fieldbuses see Supplement to the user’s manual SUFLUXUS.

10.1.1 USB Interface

The transmitter can be connected directly to the PC via USB interface. This interface is used to transfer and read device settings as well as for the temporary monitoring of the measurement during the installation.

• Connect the USB cable to the USB interface of the transmitter and the PC.

For the connection to the transmitter see Fig. 10.1.

10.1.2 Ethernet Interface

The transmitter can be integrated directly into a network via an Ethernet interface. According to the selected port the trans-mitter is able to communicate via FluxDiag with a connected PC or via a fieldbus with a control.

For the connection to a transmitter see Fig. 10.1.

• Select the program branch Spec. functions.

• Press ENTER.

• Select in the program branch Spec. functions\Communication the menu item Network.

• Press ENTER.

• Select Manual to enter the IP address.

Default values in the transmitter:

– IP address: 192.168.0.70

– subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

– standard gateway: 192.168.0.1

The IP address of the network and the transmitter have to be identical.

• Enter the IP address.

• Press ENTER.

• Select Auto to determine the IP address automatically.

• For the display of the generated IP address, select in the program branch Spec. functions\Communication\Net-work the menu item Show auto config.

• Press ENTER.

If a Fieldbus communication is established the provided IP address has to be entered.

The transmitter can be operated as sender (ASCII values) or Fieldbus interface via the RS485 interface. For potential fiel-buses, see Technical Specification.

The present fieldbus is displayed in the menu item Spec. functions\Communication e.g., Modbus.

• Select in the program branch Spec. functions\Communication the menu item Modbus.

• Press ENTER.

• Select a list item.

• Press ENTER.

10.2 Store DataThe program FluxDiag is used to transmit data to and from the transmitter.

The following actions are available:

• read stored data

• read/write device setup

• read stored snaps

The following actions can be carried out during measurement:

• monitoring of measured values and diagnostic values

• trigger and display snaps

For the use of FluxDiag see support in FluxDiag.

All data will be stored in a file (extension *.fluxus). This file contains:

• all stored measured values

• transmitter setup

• all generated snaps.

11 TroubleshootingIf any problem appears which cannot be solved with the help of this user manual, contact our sales office and give a pre-cise description of the problem. Specify the type, the serial number and the firmware version of the transmitter.

Calibration

FLUXUS is a very reliable instrument. It is manufactured under strict quality control using modern production techniques. If installed as recommended in an appropriate location, used cautiously and taken care of conscientiously, no troubles should appear. The transmitter has been calibrated at the factory and, usually, a re-calibration of the transmitter will not be necessary. A re-calibration is recommended if

• the contact surface of the transducers shows visible wear or

• the transducers were used for a prolonged period of time at a high temperature (several months >130 °C for normal transducers or > 200 °C for high temperature transducers).

In order to realize a recalibration under reference conditions either the transmitter, the transducers or the transmitter with transducers have to be sent to FLEXIM depending on which part needs to be calibrated.

The display does not work at all or fails regularly

Check the contrast setting of the transmitter (see user manual – Advanced Functions, section 9.6) or enter the HotCode 555000 to reset the display to medium contrast (see user manual - Advanced Functions, section 9.7).

Make sure that the correct voltage is available at the terminals. The destined voltage is indicated on the metal plate below the outer right terminal.

If the power supply is ok, the transducers or an internal component of the transmitter are defective. The transducers and the transmitter have to be sent to FLEXIM for repair.

If the transmitter is connected only via USB interface, the backlight will be switched off.

An error is displayed in the status line (symbol )

Press key to return to the main menu. Select Spec. functions\System settings\Event log. Press ENTER. The list with error messages is displayed.

Date and time are wrong

The data backup battery has to be replaced. Send the transmitter to FLEXIM.

An output does not work

Make sure that the outputs are configured correctly. Check the function of the output as described in section 8.2.5. If the output is defective, contact FLEXIM.

A measurement is impossible or the measured values substantially differ from the expected values

See section 11.1.

The values of the totalizers are wrong

See section 11.6.

11.1 Problems with the Measurement

A measurement is impossible because no signal is received. A question mark is displayed behind the physical quantity. The LED lights red after the start of the measurement.

• Check if the entered parameters are correct, especially the outer pipe diameter, the pipe wall thickness and the sound speed of the fluid. (typical errors: The circumference or the radius was entered instead of the diameter. The inner pipe di-ameter was entered instead of the outer pipe diameter.)

• Make sure that the recommended transducer distance was adjusted when mounting the transducers.

• Make sure that an appropriate measuring point is selected (see section 11.2) and the number of sound paths has been entered correctly (see section 8.3).

• Try to establish better acoustic contact between the pipe and the transducers (see section 11.3).

• Enter a lower value for the number of sound paths. The signal attenuation might be too high due to a high fluid viscosity or deposits on the inner pipe wall (see section 11.4).

The measuring signal is received but no measured values can be obtained

• If the defined upper or lower limit of the flow velocity is exceeded or is below, Undef and an exclamation mark "!" be-hind the physical quantity will be displayed. The measured values are marked as invalid. The limit has to be adapted to the measuring conditions (see user manual – Advanced Functions, section 4.2).

• If no exclamation mark "!" is displayed, a measurement at the selected measuring point is not possible.

Loss of signal during the measurement

• If the pipe had been run empty: Was there no measuring signal afterwards? Contact FLEXIM.

• Wait briefly until acoustic contact is reestablished. The measurement can be interrupted by a temporarily higher propor-tion of gas bubbles and solids in the fluid.

The measured values substantially differ from the expected values

• Wrong measured values are often caused by wrong parameters. Make sure that the entered parameters are correct for the measuring point.

• If the parameters are correct, see section 11.5 for the description of typical situations in which wrong measured values are obtained.

11.2 Selection of the Measuring Point• Make sure that the recommended min. distance to any disturbance source is observed (see user manual - Advanced

Functions, section 4.2).

• Avoid measuring points with deposit formation in the pipe.

• Avoid measuring points in the vicinity of deformations and defects on the pipe and in the vicinity of welds.

• Make sure that the pipe surface at the selected measuring point is even. The pipe may not be corrugated.

• Measure the temperature at the measuring point and make sure that the transducers are suitable for this temperature.

• Make sure that the outer pipe diameter is within the measuring range of the transducers.

• When measuring on a horizontal pipe, the transducers have to be mounted on the side of the pipes.

• A vertical pipe always has to be filled at the measuring point and the fluid should flow upward.

• No gas bubbles should form (even bubble-free fluids can form gas bubbles when the fluid expands, e.g., upstream of pumps and downstream of great cross-section enlargements).

11.3 Maximum Acoustic ContactObserve the instructions in section 5.2.2.

11.4 Application Specific Problems

A fluid with a wrong sound speed was selected

If a fluid was selected whose sound speed does not fit the sound speed of the fluid in the pipe, it is possible that the trans-ducer distance is not determined correctly.

The sound speed of the fluid is used to calculate the transducer distance and is; therefore, very important for the transduc-er positioning. The sound speeds stored in the transmitter are only used as reference value.

The entered pipe roughness is not appropriate

Check the entered value. The state of the pipe should be taken into account.

Measurements on porous pipe materials (e.g., concrete or cast iron) are only possible under certain conditions

Contact FLEXIM.

The pipe lining may cause problems during the measurement if it is not firmly attached to the inner pipe wall or consists of an acoustically absorbing material

Try measuring on a liner free section of the pipe.

Note! If the temperature fluctuates at the measuring point, it is especially important that the inner hooks of the clasp engage in the tension strap. Otherwise, the contact pressure of the transducers will be in-sufficient at low temperatures.

Note! If the temperature fluctuates widely, it is recommended to use FLEXIM clasps with springs to fix the transducers. Contact FLEXIM.

Highly viscous fluids strongly attenuate the ultrasonic signal

Measurements on fluids with a viscosity > 1000 mm²/s are only possible under certain conditions.

A higher proportion of gasor solids in the fluid scatter and absorb the ultrasonic signal and therefore attenuate the measuring signal

A measurement is impossible if the value is ≥ 10 %. If the proportion is high, but < 10 %, a measurement is only possible under certain conditions.

11.5 Large Deviations of the Measured Values

A fluid with a wrong sound speed was selected

If a fluid is selected whose sound speed does not fit the sound speed of the fluid in the pipe it is possible that the measur-ing signal is being mistaken for a pipe wall signal.

The flow calculated on the basis of the wrong signal by the transmitter is very small or fluctuates around zero.

There is gas in the pipe

If there is gas in the pipe, the measured flow will always be too high because both the gas volume and the liquid volume are measured.

The defined upper limit of the flow velocity is too low

All measured flow velocities that are greater than the upper limit will be ignored and marked as invalid. All quantities de-rived from the flow velocity will also be marked as invalid. If several correct measured values are ignored, the totalizer val-ues will be too low.

The entered cut-off flow is too high

All flow velocities below the cut-off flow are set to zero. All derived quantities are also set to zero. The cut-off flow (default 2.5 cm/s) has to be set to a low value to be able to measure at low flow velocities.

The entered pipe roughness is not appropriate

The flow velocity of the fluid is outside the measuring range of the transmitter

The measuring point is not appropriate

Select another measuring point to check whether the results are better. Because pipes are never rotationally symmetric, the flow profile is affected. Change the transducer position according to the pipe deformation.

11.6 Problems with the Totalizers

The values of the totalizers are too small

One of the totalizers has reached the upper limit and has to be reset to zero manually.

The sum of the totalizers is not correct

The sum of both totalizers (throughput Q) is not valid after the overflow of one of the totalizers. (see user manual - Ad-vanced Functions, section 8.1.3).

Behind the value of the totalizer a question mark "?" is displayed

The measurement was temporarily impossible, therefore the value of the totalizer can be wrong.

11.7 Problems During the Heat Flow Measurement

The measured temperature values differ from the actual values.

The temperature probes are not sufficiently insulated.

On a pipe with a small pipe diameter, the temperature probe is lifted from the pipe surface by the insulation foam.

The measured absolute value of the heat flow is correct but has the opposite sign.

Check the assignment of the supply and return temperature to the temperature inputs (see user manual – Advanced Functions, chapter 7).

The calculated heat flow differs from the actual heat flow although the measured flow and temperature values are correct

Check the heat flow coefficient of the fluid (see user manual – Advanced Functions, section 7.2).

The storage rate of all measured and diagnostic values within a temperature range has to be change.

The normal storage rate of all measured and diagnostic values is 1 h. If the temperature is outside the operating temperature range 20...40 °C, the storage rate has to be 1 min. A record has to be made 10 s before and 60 s after the event.

The temperature range of 0...100 °C is to be detected by a current input of 4...20 mA.
