USER INSTRUCTIONS FOR COMPUTER ACCESS

DATABASE SEARCHING:
Refer to your communications software documentation for procedures on dialing and connecting with an online database. When you are connected, press <Return>. One of the following will display:
1) One or more I I I l's may appear followed by Title? If the Title? prompt appears, you are ready to begin your search. See search strategies below. OR ...
2) Only I I I I 's will appear. Type N and press <Return>. If the screen responds with Title? you are ready to search. If the screen responds
with more I I I l's type ru.Ilk. and press <Return>. This should get the screen to display Title? You are ready to search. See search strategies below. OR ...
3) Information will start scrolling up the screen. Hold down your <Control> key and press the <P> key, and then release both. This should cause the information to stop scrolling and the
computer should ask What do you want to do? Type ~ and press <Return>. The screen should now display Title? You are ready to search. See search strategics below.
Search Strategies Once the screen displays Title? you may search for an item by Author, Title or Subject. Always end your search statement with a $.

Title Displays After you enter your search strategy, press <Return>. Based on your search results, the computer will display one of the following:
1) If your search located one title owned by one or more SWAN libraries, a title record will display. (see sample Title Display) At the prompt to List items for other locations? type Y. and press
<Return> to see which libraries own the item and may have copies for check out. If you want
to search for something else or end your search, type N and press <Return> to display Title?
2) If your search located two or more titles, partial information will display for each title. To get
full informaton for a single title type the 10-character ID that displays just above the desired item's author-title listing. (see Title Display)
3) If your search located no titles owned by SW AN
libraries, the computer will display Not on file .. Another search strategy may be more successful.
Searching Tips To stop information from scrolling off the screen, press <Control> and the <S> key. Press any key to continue. OR press <Control> and the <P> key. Then type cont (continue) to continue the search or func (function) to start a new search.
For online assistance type he!pme at the Title? prompt. Searching instructions will display.
TO DISCONNECT:
To disconnect, you must return to the Title? prompt by pressing <ESC>. Failure to disconnect will make the line unavailable and you will continue to collect message units on your phone bill.

WHAT IS DIAL SWAN?
SWAN (System-Wide Automated Network) is the computerized catalog of over 63 libraries in the Suburban Library System, including public, academic and high school libraries. The database lists more than 850,000 titles of books, periodicals, records, cassettes, videos and other library materials. The database shows which libraries own a given title and if the item is currently on the shelf.
SW AN is now available to you at home or in your office through dial access .
HOW TO ACCESS SWAN:
Equipment Computer terminal or microcomputer with communications software, a 1200 baud m0<;lem, and access to a telephone line or jack.
Settings 1200 Baud Full Duplex Parity ODD 7 Data Bits and 1 Stop Bit
Hours Monday - Friday: Saturday: Sunday:
8:30 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
If, after connecting, you cannot access the database, you may wish to call your local library to see if the system is operating.
