•The NF Environnement ecolabel is a voluntary certification ecolabel issued by AFNOR Certification.
• This ecolabel, which was created in 1991, is the official French ecological certification. It is awarded to products that have a reduced effect on the environment while offering an equivalent performance.
• To be issued the NF Environnement mark, the product must comply with ecological and fitness for purpose criteria. These criteria are the result of negotiations between representatives of manufacturers, consumer, environmental protection and distributor associations and public authorities.
• The use of products bearing the NF Environnement ecolabel, as of those marked with the European ecolabel , contributes to ecologically responsible consumer behaviour. It is recognized by the public authorities• For stationery, criteria have been issued in July 2008 : NF 400, & for the following product groups : Ball pen / Fountain pen / Felt pen / Mechanical pencil /Pencil / Highlighter / Marker / Eraser
Among the 40 criteria defined for stationery : * Drop test * Writing length & capacity * Cap-off time * Wash ability * Marker & highlighter ink flow * Sharpening ability * Availability of refills * Surface treatment * Raw material for wooden pencils * Raw material for erasers * Scents in erasers * Limitation of dangerous preparation in inks * Limitation of dangerous substances in inks ; Limitation of heavy metals in inks * No VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) * Limitation of the quantity of raw material per writing length; Ban or limitation of certain phthalates in writing instruments and erasers
