8 Operational (Trigger) Modes

8.1 Introduction

TheCyclops 160B thermometer has three operating modes:

• Classic

• History

• Burst

Thethermometertriggerisusedtocontroltheoperation of the thermometer in each mode. Thetriggerhastwostages:T1 and T2(Seeinset).

Alightpressonthetriggerwillmoveittoposition T1,atwhichpointastrongerpresswillbe required to move the trigger a small, further distance to the second position T2.

Thissectionoftheuserguidedescribesthemeasurement and data collection options availablebyusingthetwo-stagetriggerfunctions.

8.2 Classic Mode

ClassicModeisthesimplestoperatingmodeandtheonethatmostcloselyresemblestheoperationofearlierCyclopsportablethermometers.

InClassicMode,thetriggeroperationissinglestage(T1)only.However,notethatinClassicMode,movingthetriggertotheT2 position has no further effect.

Allfourmeasuredtemperaturetypes(Peak, Continuous, Average and Valley)aredisplayedonthesideLCDpanel,althoughonlythehighlightedtemperaturetypeisdisplayedintheviewfinderandstreamedseriallytotheDL-1000dataloggingsoftware(wiredconnectionorviaBluetooth).Dataisstreamedin0.5sintervalswhenthetriggerispressedin.Whenthetriggerisreleased,streaming stops and the temperature is logged.

8.3 History Mode

In History mode all data collection and transfer is controlled by the dual stage trigger operation. In summary, the T1 position is used to align the instrument on the chosen target and the T2 position is used to generate the logged data.

With the trigger pulled to the T1position,operationisexactlythesameasinClassicmode.Allfourtemperaturetypes(Peak,Continuous,AverageandValley)aredisplayedwiththeselected(highlighted)typebeingdisplayedinternallywithintheviewfinderaswellasbeingstreamedseriallyin0.5secondintervals(wiredconnectionorBluetooth).

If the trigger is pulled to the T2position,thisisconfirmedbyasingle‘blink’ontheinternalviewfinder,coupledwithasingle‘beep’onthesounder(ifswitchedon).WhenthetriggerispulledtotheT2position,boththeviewfinderandsidedisplaysare‘frozen’anda‘packet’ofdataisgeneratedandsentoutfordatalogging.Thispacketofdatacomprisestheoverallpeak,lastcontinuous,overallaverage and overall valley temperature measurements taken during the time that thetriggerwaspressedtotheT1position.Theemissivitysetpointandwindowcompensation indicator value in use are also output, as part of the data packet.

ThetemperaturecomponentsofthisdatapacketarealsoretainedwithintheinstrumentsmemoryandmaybeviewedonthesidedisplaybygoingintoMenumodeandre-selectingtwiceontheHistorymodeicon.

Notethatfurtherdatapacketswillonlybeaddedaftereachpressofthetriggerto the T2positionandthedataaddedwillbethemeasurementsmadeattheT1 position during the time preceding the press to T2.Anymeasurementmadeatthe T1positionwithoutgoingtotheT2positionwillnotbestored.

Ifadditionaldataisadded,anyhigherpeak(orlowervalley)temperaturerecordedwilloverwritetheearlierstoredvalue.Thenewaveragevaluewillthenbecometheaverageoverallstoreddataandthecontinuousvaluedisplayedwillbecomeanaverageofthelastcontinuousvaluesforeachdatapacketwithintheoverall stored sets.

When the stored data set has been inspected the user has the option of deleting thedatabyselectingthe‘wastebasket’icon, orexitingthedatasetwithoutdeletion(exiticon)inwhichcasefurtherdatamaybeaddedtothestoredset.

8.4 Burst Mode

BurstmodeisonlyintendedforusewhendataloggingtoanIPAQorlaptopcomputer.

Itcanbeusedformonitoringrapidfluctuationsoftemperatureorrecordingatemperatureprofile,suchasalongstripofmaterial.

Burst mode requires dual stage trigger operation. With the trigger pulled to the T1position,theinstrumentoperatesasperClassicmode(SeeSection8.2).However,notethatinburstmode,theinstantaneousreadings(only)arealwayshighlightedonthesidescreenanddisplayedinternallywithintheviewfinder.

When the trigger is pulled to the T2position,livetemperaturedata(only)isstreamedatthemaximumcollectionrate(approximately33readingspersecond)totheserialportandtheBluetoothmodule.Thismodeofoperationisdenotedbytheinternaldisplay‘blinking’inunisonwiththesounder‘beeping’(ifswitchedon)atapproximately0.5secondintervals.

If the trigger is released back to the T1position,Classicmodeoperationisresumed.
