ILWU Intl President Bob McEllrath releases solidarty statement insupport of Occupy Wall StreetOCTOBER 5, 2011 11:37 AMOctober 5, 2011

    Dear Sisters and Brothers,

On behalf of 40,000 members in the International Longshore andWarehouse Union (ILWU), I want to thank you for organizing yourOccupy Wall Street protest in New York City which is inspiringmillions of Americans.

Most of us are tired of seeing a handful of the richest corporations

and executives behave as though theyre entitled to live like kings ateveryones expense:

They arent paying their fair share of taxes, so schools are cuttingback and colleges areraising fees leaving students with obscene debts. Its time for themillionaires the richest 1% to start paying their fair share so wecan support education and other vital services.

Theyre destroying our democracy and right to a voice in theworkplace. By making it almost impossible for workers to form unionsand negotiate fair agreements, corporate America is dragging down theliving standards for all working families.

Theyre threatening to destroy Social Security and Medicare for futuregenerations. We cant allow corporations to privatize and profit fromthese programs. Instead, we should close the loopholes socorporations and the rich start paying the same contributions aseveryone else.

Your decision to bring these and other issues to corporate Americasdoorstep is courageous and involves some risks. We werentsurprised that some of you have faced beatings and pepper spray fromoverzealous police. Your crusade to shine a light on the corruptionand injustice thats infecting Wall Street is bound to ruffle somefeathers. Weve experienced some similar rough treatment in Longview,Washington, where ILWU families are also taking a stand against

corporate greed. Our fight there is against EGT, a multi-nationalcorporation that took taxpayer subsidies to build a grain exportterminal then betrayed workers and the community.

Like you, ILWU members in Longview have been arrested, beaten andpepper spayed. We knowthat justice wont be won by asking greedy employers for permission orwaiting for politicians to pass laws. Thats why we hope that youllstand your ground on Wall Street while we do the same in Longview because An Injury To One Is An Injury To All!

    Date: Monday, October 03, 2011 11:36:31 PM

I'm in a hurry, so I'll have to keep this as brief as possible, but...Yesterday I sent an email announcing that supervised activities would be taking

place at the already designated kids' zone, starting Monday. I came by today to setup only to find everything gone. I talked to a bunch of people and no one really hadanswers. Oh well. That rug was getting moldy so I understand that, but anyway...

As a result, we'll have to put a hold on the kids' zone for now until we set upsomething new. Sorry!

New article detailing intense investigation of Koch Industries and their criminal acts.

I think it's really important to put a face on the evil perpetrated by corporations andthese guys have the perfect mug.

I've been printing these as handouts at various protests and usually put info on theback about my main concern, ecosystem collapse...but I'm in CA for another week,so if anybody wants to make these up and hand then out with info about OWS anda link to that article, feel free. You can get 3 to a page.

My experience is people take them because even though they know it's fake, theylove getting free money!

Fun way to get the message out, and with the publication of this article there isgoing to be quite a bit of media focussed on the Kochs.

If anyone wants to dress like a climate zombie and help me carry the banner when Iget back let me know, I've got the masks, tuxedo t-shirts and banner.

(Newser) NY PD cops better watch it w hen they get tough w ith OccupyWall Street protesters from now on, because the Marines are com ingtohelp protect the demonstrators. "I'm heading up there tonight in my dressblues," announced a Marine veteran in a message reposted by another

Marines and other vets have already been spotted in the grow ingmovement. A photo posted on a protest tweet shows tw o Marines recentlyin an Occupy Wall Street demonstration. One holds a sign reading:"Second t ime I 've fought for my country. First t ime I've known my

The Occupy Wall Street movement may have thought it broke new ground

when the NYC Transit Union joined their movement, but that ground justt ipped the R ichter Scale w ith news that United States Army and M arinetroops are reportedly on their w ay to various protest locations to supportthe movement and to protect the protesters.

Heres the message Ward R eil ly relayed from another Marine, on hisfacebook page:

Im heading up there tonight in my dress blues. So far, 15 of my fellowmarine buddies are meeting me there, also in Uniform. I want to sendthe following message to Wall St and Congress:I didnt fight for Wall St. Ifought for America. Now its Congress turn.

My true hope, though, is that we Veterans can act as first line of defensebetween the police and the protester. If they want to get to someprotesters so they can mace them, they will have to get through theFucking Marine Corps first. Lets see a cop mace a bunch of decoratedwar vets.I apologize now for typos and errors.

Typing this on iPhone whilst heading to NYC. We can organize once werethere. Thats what we do best.If you see someone in uniform, gathertogether.

We all took an oath to uphold, protect and defend the constitution of thiscountry. Thats what we will be doing.

    Hope to see you there!!

Kudos, Mr R eilly!Thank You for having the courage and foresight to seepast the transparently false and empty patriotism perpetually touted bythe defense skanks and petro whores in Congress in order to keep theircampaign coffers fi l led to the brim. Meanw hile, your brothers and sisterssuffer massive cuts and are forced to live w ith PTSD, w ith litt le if any helpfrom the very government and country for wh ich you have sacrificed somuch. Thank you for recognizing this movement not as a bunch ofscreaming w hite liberal kids with Henna tattoos, but as a universal andprofound rejection of the unchecked and undue influence the plutocratson Wall Street have had on the decision-making in Washington. Thank

You for your service, and thank you for seeing through all the mountainsof bullsh#t being shoveled around the clock by the Koch B ros. puppets inWashington via their lapdogs in the media.

Its safe to say to if Mr. Reilly and his fellow marines lend their voices, itcould be a defining moment that gives the Occupation of Wall Streetmovement the just right amoun t of fuel it needs to catch fire. After all, itwould be interesting to see the media ignore NYPD cops pepper sprayingdecorated w ar veterans, assuming the donut m archers dared to evenconsider the notion of trying.

I can't really do anything about this potentially dangerous idea, but

I'll point it out here in case someone else knows better:

A delightfully pointed sign from a video of the current occupationscaught my attention, openly stating that "The 99% includes the cops."Which made me wonder about what other groups would be included, andthe US military came to mind. Especially from what I've heard aboutrecruitment frequently targeting the poor.

A little support from the barracks would be rather unsettling for thepeople in charge, wouldn't it?

    WHEN: Thursday, October 6, 8 p.m.

WHERE: Ronald Reagan Building, U.S. Department of State, 14th Street Entrance

Washington, DC A group of youth and environmental activists, led by the Energy Action Coalition,

will hold #OccupyStateDept, a sleep-in and protest of the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline project,

and the role that TransCanada and Big Oil have played in the State Departments review process.

Protesters will gather at 8p.m., including Energy Action Coalition Co-Director Maura Cowley and

    Indigenous Environmental Networks Kandi Mossett.

Over the past few months, youth, indigenous and environmental activists, including Energy Action

Coalition, have urged President Obama to reject the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline. And Tuesday at

an Obama Campaign fundraiser in St. Louis over 100 youth activists rallied outside, and two entered

the fundraiser to take the demand to reject Keystone XL to President Obama. They interrupted his

speech, and despite not getting a direct response, he acknowledged their presence and demands.

Fridays Keystone XL public hearing is the final hearing in a process riddled with controversy. The

State Departments process has recently been called into question after internal emails were

discovered connecting a major lobbyist for the project to Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, and

management of the hearings have seemingly favored Big Oil and their supporters.

At previous hearings along the pipeline route, big corporations and their front groups have bussed in

people, paid for line sitters, and skirted the rules, said Cowley. Well camp outside of the Reagan

building to make sure that our leaders get the chance to speak out against this potentially

catastrophic project. TransCanada and Big Oil are occupying our political system, it's time for us to

    occupy the State Department.

The private public space situation is amazing for us. There is a need to expand. I'vecc'ed this information to the september17 google group.

    Hi Drew,

I would send this to tactical but they don't seem to have an online presence. Please forward as you see fit.

I'm an urban planning student, so naturally I was interested in the legal frameworkthat made it possible for us to be in Zuccotti park. After some research I foundthe NYC Dept. of City Planning's zoning regulation and inventory of all privatelyowned public spaces (POPS).

Since I hope that OWS gets so many people that we have to take over other sites,I thought we should start planning for what those sites are. I took the NYC DCP'sinventory list, looked them up on google earth, and made a map of all the spacesthat I think are large enough to accommodate another occupation site. Yellow iswhat I think is best, red is okay, blue is iffy, and pink is I'm not sure it's a POPS(the inventory is somewhat ambiguous by only listing street numbers and notproviding maps of each site.

I've attached the map I made, the NYC DCP inventory, the zoning reg (legalese),and a summary of POPS in NYC. Again, feel free to share.

I am for elaborating collective discourse, but perhaps better in termsof general GOALS rather than demands. Demads are naive at thispoint, to put it shoftly. This is not incompatible with strategic actions that may achieve shortterm victories. Due to our location I think we should provide ourview of the economic facts, and prioritize our actions toward shortterm and long term solutions.

Regarding the elaboration of collective discourse, perhaps we shouldtry some form of open source or similar wiki-process that wouldfacilitate multiple contributions from diverse viewpoints.Cesar

    (inevitably unflattering) terms.

The only thing preventing millions of people from goingout onto the streets on their own is that they don'tunderstand how Wall Street works or what it does. Thatto me is why the movement needs to be specific. It has aresponsibility to explain these problems to the general

public and to show that solutions do exist and thatthey're attainable. People I think need more than just theknowledge that they can protest -- they need to believethat they can fix things and that someone out there hasthe answers. And a lot of the people on this email list dohave the answers and could provide that leadership thatis so desperately needed.

The "We are the 99%" is a VERY powerfulmessage. It basically says "We don't need tonegotiate. This is our country and we want itback from the top 1% which has been selling usout." The 1% know damned well what the99% want. If you forced any 10 in the top 1%

of them to make a list of 10 things they thoughtthe other 99% wanted, I guarantee you'd haveno more than 16 real issues (at most) amongthe 100 answers you'd get in total. And Istrongly suspect the 99% would agree or atmost restate them.

They are MUCH better off making a generalstatement along the "We Are 99%" that holdstheir ground, and makes clear that their first

priority is establishing their presence, building acritical mass and representation around the US.There should be a clever way of throwing thedemand for demands back on the media: "It hastaken years to create this mess, the public hasbeen sold on the idea that it is powerless. Ourfirst aim is to convey that the bottom 99%

doesn't merely have the right to a seat at thetable, it should not have to negotiate with thetop 1% because the elites depend on ouracquiescence and support for their verysurvival."

There has to be a nice way to say that, but Iwould brush off the demand and make it clearthat organization/membership building and (Ihate to use that tired 60s term, but it fits)consciousness raising are the first priorities. Themore the numbers swell, the more power this

effort has. Issuing demands is not on thecritical path right now and has the potential todeter people from joining. The broader publicunderstands damned well what the aims areeven if the elites and their media lapdogs areplaying stupid.

Bring back competition by limiting the size of these, either in termsof % of deposits or dollar amounts. Many ways to accomplish this, including
