USB 3.0THE UNIVERSAL SERIAL BUS

ARJUN C C ROLLNO 9 R7 A

INTRODUCTION A serial bus standard to connect devices to a host computer. Designed to allow many peripherals to be connected using a single standardized interface socket. Designed to improve plug and play capability. The design of USB is standardized by the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF).

USB 3.0 It is the upcoming version of USB. Super speed architecture. But still backward compatible.

HISTORYThe USB 1.0 specification was introduced in1994. (12 Mbit/s) The USB 2.0 specification was released in April 2000 and was standardized by the USB-IF at the end of 2001(480 Mbit/s,) The USB 3.0 specification was released on November 17, 2008 by the USB 3.0 Promoter Group.

ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW

COMPONENTS HUB HOST DEVICE

COMPONENTSHUBThe hub provide electrical interface between USB device and the host It provide device connect and disconnect detection provides bus fault detection It provide support to both super speed and USB 2.0 device

COMPONENTSHOSTIt also include super speed and normal speed buses which works simultaneously. The host interact with device by the help of a host controller. There are some root downstream port, through these ports it controls both the control flow and data flow. The ports also help to provide power to the attached devices.

COMPONENTSPERIPHERAL DEVICEA USB peripheral device must support both super speed and non-super speed bus In order to perform data transfer all devices will be assigned by an address from host Identifying and assigning unique address to the device is called enumeration Simultaneous operation of super speed and non-super speed modes are not allowed for peripheral devices

FEATURES

DATA TRANSFER RATES Low speed Full speed High speed - 1.5 Mbit/s - 12 Mbit/s 480 Mbit/s 5.0 Gbit/s

Super speed -

OTHER FEATURESBackward compatible. Plug and play capability. Higher Power Supplied to the USB Devices. (100miliamps to 900 milliamps) Lower Power Consumption by the USB Devices It can drive more devices (single hub 4 devices) Full- duplex data transfer It support hot swapping

COMPARISONS

USB 3.0 vs FIREWIREUSB 3.0 is more faster than fire wire S3200 (4.8Gb/sec and 3.2Gb/sec) FireWire is capable of delivering more power over a single cable than USB 3.0 FireWire also allows for cable runs of up to 100 meters peer-to-peer nature in firewire USB is master/slave Unlike USB, FireWire ports are typically available only via add-in cards or on certain higher-end motherboards

USB 3.0 vs USB 2.0The two series shares the common things like plug and play, backward comparability etc. Even the appearance is same for an ordinary user USB 3.0 is about 10 times faster than 2.0 3.0 Can provide more power for the devices Unlike 2.0, USB 3.0 does not support the 1.1 version which is now old.

USB 3.0 vs USB 2.0USB 2.0 has 5 pins but the newer version was introduced with 9 pins. The inner side of 2.0 was appeared to be in white or gray or black, but for 3.0 it is blue. The USB 3.0 cable is a little thicker than the USB 2.0 cable. The USB 3.0 support about 3 mtr but the 2.0 can support 5 mtr

APPLICATIONSIt an connect a verity of devices such as flash drive, key boards, mouses, video cams, ipods etc. With the new version(3.0) it can support portable hard disk drives. It can also be used to provide power for low power conception devices The new version support high speed copying

CONCLUSIONfirst USB3.0 enabled motherboard was introduced by ASUS named P6X58 on 29 july

CONCLUSIONSince the newer version of USB ie the 3.0 support high speed, it will be replacing many connectors in future. Because of the backward comparability it will be in the next coming computers and pen drives By the end of 2009 the USB 3.0 will be in market The driver is already given for Linux OS.
