analysis as Director of the SPEED Clinic at the University of Virginia. Through this
innovative venture, Jay was able to blend the fields of clinical practice and engineering to better
understand and eliminate the cause of overuse injuries in endurance athletes. His unique approach goes
outside the traditional model of therapy and aims to correct imbalances before they affect your
performance.
Jay literally wrote the book on running gait assessments: he is author of “Anatomy for Runners”, writes
columns for numerous magazines, and has published over a dozen professional journal articles and
three book chapters. Jay has had an active research career, teaches nationally, and consults for
numerous footwear companies, the US Air Force and USA Track and Field. His ongoing research focus on
footwear and the causative factors driving overuse injury continues to provide him cutting edge
knowledge to educate and provide patients with an unmatched level of innovation and success. Having
taught in the Sports Medicine program at UVA, he brings a strong bias towards patient education, and
continues to teach nationally to elevate the standard of care for Therapists, Physicians, and Coaches
working with endurance athletes.
In addition to his clinical distinction, Jay is a certified coach through both the United States Track and
Field Association and the United States Cycling Federation, and certified Golf Fitness Instructor through
Titleist Performance Institute. He has a competitive history in swimming, triathlon, cycling, and running
events on both the local and national level, and has coached athletes from local standouts to national
medalists. He is excited to share this passion with the team at Rebound, and explore the Pacific
Northwest with his family on knobbies, skis, boards, and soles.

me”, Ken says, “having to adjust to an orthopedic challenge like none I have faced before”. After helping
so many others regain physical function after serious injury, he now was forced to experience things
from the other side. Ken did adjust, and soon was able to ride, and then race, mountain bikes
competitively. This eventually led to racing road bikes, a sport that he still participates in today at age
50.

Greg Mueller
After a brief high school running career, Greg discovered the sport of bicycle racing
at college - and was hooked! He began training and competing in earnest that year
at the 1989 edition of Indiana University's Little 500 bicycle race, and by 1993 came
o-so-close to the win with a 2nd place in the now famous annual race. Greg's
passion for the sport continued after college with him achieving the level of USAC
Cat. 1 on both the road and track. His successes included many wins, notably a State Road Race
Championship, State Time Trial Championship, and a 14th place finish in the Points Race at the 2000 US
Olympic Track Cycling Trials. By 2002 Greg was looking for new challenges and began racing triathlons.
His fitness and training from cycling success, allowing him to turn Professional within one short year.
That year he won almost half of the races he entered (a challenging feat) and continued with multiple
wins and course records over the following years. In 2010, Greg placed 10th overall at the Best of the
U.S. National Championships, and 3rd in his age group at the USAT Nationals.
Always interested in how to be a better athlete, he was tenaciously exploring new ways to train smarter,
Greg experimented with many training and recovery plans - often involving his training partners, who
weren't always eager for his "new adventures" in training - training that often times represented cutting
edge thinking for the time, and is now considered "standard practice". Coupling that knowledge (gained
and reinforced by his own experiences) with his more formal coaching education, ultimately lead to a
passionate understanding of human physiology and why and how the human body does what it does,
and more specifically ....what it can do!
Utilizing his passion and knowledge of training, Greg began coaching in 2001. He founded Innovative
Endurance and TEAM IE in 2002, and continues to work diligently to provide the balance, insight,
motivation and support that has helped many athletes, pro's and age-groupers alike, to find success.

Luis Vargas
Luis Vargas is a co-founder of MarkAllenOnline.com along with The Grip himself. Luis met Mark in 1990 in Boulder, Colorado and has a lot of incredible (if not painful) memories of training with him. Luis has a broad background in the world of athletics that started early in his life. He was born in Ibague Colombia, but moved to San Juan
Puerto Rico when he was 12 years old where he ran cross country, swam, and participated in varsity soccer and volleyball during high school. In 1978 he went to the University of Miami were he combined one year of varsity swimming with three years of varsity soccer. In 1983 he earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and in 1985 a Masters of Science from Arizona State University. Like many people in the 80’s Luis had watched coverage of the Ironman on television and after finishing his schooling decided to give some shorter races a try. He eventually qualified for the National Championships of the USTS series, and then progressed to half Ironman distance races, and eventually to the full Ironman distance. Luis qualified for the Ironman World Championships in Kona five times and posted a personal best in 1993 with a total time of 9:34. In 1996 Luis changed his focus from training himself to training others. "When I was young my coaches were some of the most influential people in my life. So I decided to get into coaching myself". Luis first coached boys soccer for five years with outstanding results. One of his teams went from a losing season to an undefeated and championship winning season in two years.
By 2001 he was ready to come full circle and begin coaching in the sport of triathlons. That year he received his USAT coaching certification and joined forces with Mark to provide the first ever artificial intelligence triathlon coaching engine. Luis, a programmer by trade and a triathlete by passion, helped Mark bring online the knowledge, training methods, and experience Allen gained as a world-class athlete. Luis had not only the sophisticated programming expertise necessary to execute such a daunting task, but also provided an age grouper’s insight to the project. Together they combined a champion’s experience with the realities of family and work commitment into a joint vision that provides the best possible triathlon coaching available. Still living in Boulder Colorado with his wife Kelly, son Camilo and daughter Sofia all avid triathletes.
