Module 2 Session 2 Activity 4 Charades with Words Scenarios Note to Facilitators: These quotes are from the perspective of 14 different market actors in the rice value chain. Each quote says something about the nature of the relationship with at least one other market actor or group of actors (underlined). Choose 8 of these quotes, write them on to 8 separate cards and give 2 cards to each group. Ask the groups to prepare two 60-second skits to demonstrate the correct position of this relationship on the CC4U matrix. The aim of the skit is to enable the other participants to get the right answer by plotting the relationship in the correct box. 1. Importer of White Rice o “It makes no business sense to produce locally with all the risk and untrustworthy local rice traders. 2. Local Rice Trader o “There are few good rice mills and the ones that are good are difficult to work with in terms of getting the quality and volumes at a fair price.” 3. Local Paddy Trader o “The commercial guys are okay, but working with small paddy farmers is a real pain because they do not honor agreements and always want me to take all the market risk.” 4. Large Scale Rice Miller o “I cannot get enough quality paddy because the paddy farmers – of all sizes - just do not want to invest in producing quality white rice.” 5. SME Agro-Input Dealer Module 2 Session 2: Charades with Words Scenarios 1

Note to Facilitators: These quotes are from the perspective of 14 different market actors in the rice value chain.

1. Importer of White Riceo “It makes no business sense to produce locally with all the risk and

untrustworthy local rice traders.”

2. Local Rice Tradero “There are few good rice mills and the ones that are good are difficult to

work with in terms of getting the quality and volumes at a fair price.”

3. Local Paddy Tradero “The commercial guys are okay, but working with small paddy farmers is a

real pain because they do not honor agreements and always want me to take all the market risk.”

4. Large Scale Rice Millero “I cannot get enough quality paddy because the paddy farmers – of all

sizes - just do not want to invest in producing quality white rice.”

5. SME Agro-Input Dealero “My business depends on what products I can afford to buy from the larger

input suppliers or wholesalers, since I can push farmers to buy whatever I have.”

6. Large Input Supply Firmo “Small paddy farmers are important to my business, but they just do not

have any money, so why should I invest in them?”

7. Small Paddy Farmer o “Rice farming is first a way to get food and second a way to get as much

money from the paddy traders as I can—even if it means adding a bit of stuff to my bag.”

8. Small Scale Emerging Commercial Paddy Farmer o “Getting quality seeds is a real problem because the government puts a lot

of controls on the seed industry.”

9. Tractor Service Providero “Bankers are completely not interested in my business; I mean they barely

have time to talk to me after I spend hours traveling to talk to them.”

10. Ministry Of Agriculture Officialo “We want the private sector to step up, but they just refuse to do the right

thing. That is why we need to intervene directly to provide seeds and inputs.”

11. Rural Bank Managero “We are a small bank, so why would I be interested in organizing products

for agricultural clients? I cannot afford that much risk.”

12. Credit Officer from a Large Banko “Until the agricultural sector invests in better, more reliable production,

why should I risk my job when there are plenty of other less risky options I can bank?”

13. Spraying Service Provider o “I get asked a lot to provide spraying, mostly as part of barter transaction

with friends and family, but if I could work with an input supply firm maybe spraying could turn into a full-time job.”

14. Ag Extension Officero “I get no money for transport. I get paid maybe every couple of months,

and then I hear government say they are hiring more extension workers. Why don’t they just pay me regularly and provide me resources to do my job?”
