ope Benedict XVI said, "We are supposed tobe the light of the world, and that means we

should allow the Lord to be seen through us.When Jesus walked on this Earth, He called theApostles to co-work with Him in His mission. InMark, chapter 16:15, Jesus commands Hisapostles to “go into the world and proclaim thegood news to the whole of creation”. So tobecome a true disciple of Christ, we shouldco-operate with Him in carrying out this greatmission that is entrusted to us by Him.

Being a missionary does not always meangoing to distant lands or preaching tothousands of people. Your mission field can beyour school, workplace, college or your home.Witnessing to Christ could be something assimple as saying grace before your meals, thanking God for the simple things He hasgiven you. You could even share a testimonywith a friend about how God intervened inyour life. Every situation we come across in lifegives us an opportunity to improve the worldaround us. The greatest sign of love we canshow to those around us is to give them Jesus, through our kindness and generosity.

This is our 50 Issue and we are extremelygrateful to the Lord for all the blessings He hasshowered through this magazine. It is apowerful tool of evangelisation and the articles

are touching many hearts and through it,the Lord is drawing His children to Him.

We offer all our patrons, benefactors, writers and readers to the Lord, through the Immaculate heart ofMary, our Mother.

th

51: Evil in the world is an obscure andpainful mystery. Even the one Crucifiedasked His Father, “My God, why haveyou forsaken me?” (Mt 27:46). Muchabout it is incomprehensible. Onething, though, we know for sure: God isone hundred percent good. He cannever be the originator of somethingevil. God created the world to be good, but it is not yet complete. In violentupheavals and painful processes it isbeing shaped and moved towards itsfinal perfection. That may be a betterway to classify what the Church callsphysical evil, for example, a birthdefect, or a natural catastrophe. Moralevils, in contrast, come about throughthe misuse of freedom in the world.

“Hell on earth” - child soldiers, suicidebombings, concentration camps areusually man-made. The decisivequestion is therefore not, “How cananyone believe in a good God whenthere is so much evil?” but rather, “Howcould a person with a heart andunderstanding endure life in this worldif God did not exist?” Christ’s death andResurrection show us that evil did nothave the first word, nor does it have thelast. God made absolute good resultfrom the worst evil. We believe that inthe Last Judgement, God will put anend to all injustice. In the life of theworld to come, evil no longer has anyplace and suffering ends.

Losing The World To Gain

ChristPrice Tag

Every day of our lives, we longfor an upgrade. Materialisticallyspeaking, we feel the need tomake an appearance at the topand always portray a betterversion of ourselves, even whenwe are struggling inside. Thebrands we wear, the phone weuse, the friends we have, theyall stick to us like a price tagtelling the world how muchwe’re worth. Why is it that we

strive to become of the world, but not of Heaven? Why do wetry to please the world and striveto become someone we are not?Why do we become sooverwhelmed by our worldlyvalue that we forget the value ofour soul? We often forget thesignificance of our soul and howworthy we are considered inHeaven. We are so desired byour Abba Father that JesusHimself was willing to die for us.Nowadays, people equate the

worth of their soul to theamount and value of theirmaterial belongings. We fail tounderstand that in reality, oursoul’s worth corresponds to theprecious blood of Christ that wasshed for us.

St Paul says in Philippians 3:8,“For His sake, I have suffered theloss of all things, and I regardthem as rubbish, in order that Imay gain Christ”. We only gainChrist when we are willing totake up the cross and renouncethe world and all that it has tooffer. St Paul was so purpose-driven that for him all thatmattered was his unity withChrist. This is where our lifeshould take us, into this beautifulintimacy with Christ, in which thepromise of our salvation isfulfilled.

Purpose Driven

Our Goal

Knowing Christ

Let’s compare our life to the lifeof an athlete. His only goal andfocus is to win a gold medal. Ona day-to-day basis, he sacrificeshimself entirely in all aspects ofhis life, including diet, sleep, leisure time, training, to achievethis goal. An athlete’s life is fullyconformed to this one aim. Histotal concentration is focussedon achieving his goal. Nothingdiverts his focus - the beauty ofthe world around him, hisfriends, family, social media, fame or popularity. This is notbecause he doesn’t see them orknow they’re there, but becausehe doesn’t consider anythingmore valuable than his goal. If anathlete trains so hard for aperishable thing, then how muchmore should we work harder to“gain Christ”?

In Philippians 3:8, St Paul speaksabout how he regards all hisgains as loss for the “value ofknowing Christ”. What does itmean to “know” Jesus? In simplewords, knowing Christ means tomake Him our own. Now, whereare we in our relationship withJesus? We need to ask ourselves, how can I make Him my own if Idon’t love Him? But then again, how can I love Him, if I don’t

know Him? St Paul is one of themany great saints who ‘knew’Christ. In his lifetime he hadmany achievements, includingfame and money, as he washighly intellectual and a zealousPharisee persecuting earlyChristians. He gave it all up, justto ‘know Christ’. Furthermore, heexperienced persecution for thesake of Christ.

2 Corinthians 11:23-28 gives us adescription of all that St Paulwent through for the sake of hislove for God; three times he wasbeaten with rods, he was stonedonce and shipwrecked thrice.Through toil and hardships, such

as many sleepless nights, hungerand thirst, cold and nakedness,St Paul demonstrated aconviction of what eternity hadin store for him after thistemporary life on earth.

The question is, are weconvinced of what is stored forus in Heaven? I am not sayingthat we should abandon all ourpossessions and take up acontemplative lifestyle, but weshould be kind to our souls, putJesus above everything in theworld and make striving forHeaven our highest priority.

What doesit mean to

“know”

Jesus?

Iattended many retreats as ateenager and young adult,

but none of them changed myheart. I would pretend infront of others to be veryspiritual and that I kneweverything about Jesus. But Istarted leading an impure lifeand prayer became evenmore boring for me. Iattended many retreats in theUK, but I could only managefor the first few weeks beforefalling back into my old sinfulways. Afterwards, I wouldconvince myself that the Lordwas angry with me, so there isno point in reverting to a holylife. He must be tired ofhearing me confessing thesame sins over and overagain! In this manner, Isurvived from one day to thenext.

In 2013, I attended a Schoolof Evangelisation (SOE), aresidential youth retreat, organised by Sehion UKMinistries. The Lord used thisretreat to transform me. Icame to know Jesus, whounderstands me as I am andaccepts my flaws. In the otherretreats, the same Jesus wasthere, but I didn’t see Him.The grace of God startedmoving in me, the Holy Spiritstarted taking control. However, it still wasn’t acomplete transformation. In

October 2016, I had a painfulexperience. I was leftshattered. To me, it felt like Iwas standing in the middle ofan island, and all I could seearound me was an endless, stormy ocean. However, theLord wants us to keep Him atthe centre of our relationship, otherwise one little spark isenough for an explosion.

I was sorry for what I haddone and was ready tocorrect myself, but no onewas ready to give me asecond chance. Nobodytrusted me or believed in me.I used to go to church withoutmuch interest and sit at theback, gazing at the Cross, asking Him, “What now? Ihave lost everything. I don’tthink I am going to make thisthird year a success; I hadalready wasted three out ofnine months and had misseda lot of lectures and labs.Everyone else seemed happyand good but nobody seemedto care for me. “WHAT DOYOU WANT ME TO DO NOW?”I would ask angrily of Him,and everyone else. But theLord, who waited for me andloved me at my worst, whispered, “JUST TRUST INME”. He breathed into mysoul, once again.

Just like the Father embracedthe prodigal son, the Lordhugged me, and celebratedmy return. He didn’t carewhat wrongs I had done inthe last three years; He wasonly concerned about mypresent. I saw my Lordwalking on the water, comingtowards me. From the islandof isolation and depression,He took me by hand and weboth started walking on thewater. My problems, disappointments, anger,

flaws, weaknesses, losses andeverything that was about toswallow me were now undermy feet. I realised that eventhough the water was stillthere, it would not drown meanymore. The waves wererising, but they stayed besideme; they didn’t even dare totouch me, for I was holdingthe hands of the Almighty.

The following January, determined not to let my pastruin my future, I returned touniversity. I had missed threemonths of lessons and thefirst semester exams were justaround the corner, for which Ihad only three weeks toprepare. I had to start from

scratch, with no teachersavailable to help me.Fortunately, some of myfriends helped me, and byGod’s grace I passed myexams. It was during this timethat I realised that God has apurpose for me. I chose toforget my past and forgivethose who had wronged me. Idecided to move on with mylife, living each presentmoment believing in abeautiful future because ofthe hope I have in Christ.

Ilove spring. Its the best time of theyear to be outdoors to enjoy the

breathtaking beauty of nature. When Isee the beauty around me, Iremember to thank the Creator andoften reflect on the beauty of Hiscreation, and yet I have to remindmyself that the masterpiece of Hiscreation is not nature itself, buthumans. How often do we rememberto thank and praise God for the gift ofpeople around us? Many times weassess people according to theirweight, size, colour and clothes, andfail to see and love the beauty of thereal person. Jesus Himself said, thesecond greatest commandment is tolove your neighbour as you loveyourself (Mark 12:31).

If we wait for people to change theirways or overcome their weaknesses inorder to love them, then we mighthave to wait until eternity. We are tolove and accept people in our lives asthey are. In today’s world when thingsbegin to go wrong inrelationships, many do nothesitate to make hasty decisionsand go their separate ways. Butlife is all about makingadjustments and compromises. Inthe absence of these two factors,relationships can become chaotic.If given a chance, many of uswould jump at the opportunity torectify our past and do thingsdifferently. Many parents wouldlove to be a cheerleader – not apoliceman, for their kids; manywould love to express greaterappreciation for their loved ones;

to find greater happiness andmeaning, always making sure thatthey are moving towardssomething they want in life. Weare all on a journey called life andwhat matters in the end is howmuch we have loved and areloved.

If, instead of imparting happiness,we cause sorrow and pain toothers, then we are journeyingalong the wrong path in life. Jesuscame to love and to save all, andso it is the duty of every Christianto love everyone around them inspite of all their shortcomings.Life is like a circle with God at thecentre and love as its radius. When our relationship withothers improve, our happinessmultiplies; we become more

Christlike and at peace withourselves.

Ever wondered what can be donewhen we find it difficult to loveothers in our lives? We can alwayspray for them, and ask Jesus toheal our wounds, grant us thegrace to forgive and forget, andlearn to love each other again. Inthis way we are being kind andconsiderate towards our fellowbeings. God our creator made us inHis image and likeness to impartlove and to live in harmony. Let uscontinue then on our journey toimpart this abundance of love thatwe have freely received from ourcreator with everyone around us.“You received without payment;give without payment”(Matthew 10:8).

Antioch was a populated city of ancient Syria. It isabout 15 miles inland from the Mediterranean Sea, in

what today is Turkey. During the days of St Paul, Antiochwas the third largest city in the Roman empire (afterRome and Alexandria) and had a large colony of migrantJews living there among the largely ‘Greek’ (non-Jewish orGentile) population.

The death of St Stephen, the first martyr for witnessing toChrist, opened the doors for greater and more fiercepersecution of the church throughout Jerusalem.Consequently, Antioch was one of the places the earlyChristians fled in order to escape persecution inJerusalem. In Antioch, as in other places, the exiledchurch began to flourish and grow. When the Christians inJerusalem heard that many people in Antioch werebecoming believers in Christ, they sent Barnabas there, who in turn brought Paul, to help the new converts(Acts 11:19-26). Paul lived and taught in the synagoguesof Antioch for fourteen years and Barnabas stayed therefor one year. St Paul began his second missionary journeyfrom there. It was in Antioch that the disciples of Jesuswere first called ‘Christians’ (Acts 11:19-26).

The first gentile church was founded in Antioch. Althoughone may find little evidence of the early Christian Churchcommunity, Antioch should be remembered for playing amajor role in establishing Christianity as the primaryreligious force in the world today. It bears the modernname Antakya and is now a decaying turkish town.

Kingdom Revelator is an important instrument for

communicating the “joy of the Gospel” by and to young

people. The testimonies contained in the magazine

strike a contemporary tone, even as they transit

faithfully the timeless wisdom of our Catholic faith in

Christ. I leave copies of Kingdom Revelator around the

diocesan chancery where I work, and invariably our

workers pick it up and share it with family members and

friends. My hope is that the magazine continues to find

a broad readership through its dissemination to clergy,

catechists, and youth ministers of our Church.

In my life, I have alwaysstruggled to keep my faith,

whether it was due toseemingly unfair sickness, disagreements on churchteachings or just a spiritualdesert where it felt likenobody was around. However, recently I was struck by anastounding witness of God’slove. While I would have likedto have witnessed a miracle, itwas much more mundane, nestled among the crazinessthat is a high schooler’s life.

As a child, I went through thepublic-school system, untilmiddle school. I was exposedto the thoughts and views ofthose largely outside of apracticing Christian faith. So,after diving headfirst into adevout Catholic high school it

seemed at first to be difficult,as I struggled to adapt. In thiscrazy period of adjustment Iwas faced with aspects of thefaith, which at the time, Icouldn’t wrestle with. This putme to the test in myrelationship with Jesus.

Through all of this, I wassustained by the power ofGod’s care through the love ofothers. Countless times thecompassion of others, whodesired for me to be closer toGod who kept me within Hisgrasp when otherwise I wouldhave become a lost sheep. Sonow when I feel lost, I simplyturn to see the care of othersand am convinced, without ashadow of a doubt, that God isworking in my life. “Eventhough I walk through the

ST ANTHONY

OF PADUAPATRON OF LOST THINGS

Early Life

Call to Sainthood

Anthony of Padua came from a wealthyfamily. Born on 15 August 1195,Anthony was baptised with the nameFernando. At the age of fifteen, heentered the Abbey of Santa Cruz inCoimbra, a city known for its rich culturein Portugal. It was there that hedeveloped a deep interest in studyingthe Bible and reading the history of theChurch, gaining the theologicalknowledge that would bring to fruitionhis famous preachings.

In 1220, St Anthony had a major turningpoint in his life. The relics of fiveFranciscan missionaries turned martyrswere brought back from Morocco toCoimbra. This inspired a young Anthonyto aspire to a life like the Franciscan

th

martyrs, and he set about pursuing a lifeof Christian perfection. After making thisdecision, he asked for permission toleave the Augustinian Canons in order tobecome a Friar Minor. He was grantedpermission. He took the name Anthonywith the intention of going to Morroco, like the martyrs. However, God haddifferent plans for the young Anthony.

Anthony soon fell ill and had no choicebut to go back to Italy. In 1221, heparticipated in the Chapter of the Matsin Assisi, where he met another soon tobecome saint, St Francis. Anthony spentsome time living in solitude at a conventin northern Italy. It was while he was inForli that the Lord called him to a newmission. He attended a priest’sordination where there was no one to

preach. Anthony was chosen to speakand he so impressed his Superiorswith his articulacy, knowledge andwisdom that he was assigned tospread God’s word as a preacher.Anthony preached to the massesthroughout France and Italy and withsuch effect that those who had leftthe Church, returned, after hearinghim preach.

Anthony achieved another milestone;he was one of the first theologyteachers of the Friars Minor, startingin Bologna. He received blessings forhis ministry from St.Francis, who sawhow virtuous Anthony was St.Franciswas so impressed that he personallysent a letter to Anthony inviting himto teach theology to the brethren.

After becoming the ProvincialSuperior of the Friars Minor innorthern Italy, Anthony continuedpreaching, while still holding hisposition. After finishing his term asthe Superior, Anthony went to live inPadua, a town that he had frequentedquiet often in the past. The people ofPadua had always revered Anthonyand welcomed him with open arms onhis return and treated him with greatrespect while he was living there. Lessthan a year later, he died at the citygates on 13 June 1231. One yearafter his death Anthony wascanonized a saint by Pope Gregory IX,who had heard St.Anthony’s teachingshimself. Many people came forwardto tell of miracles occurring throughSt.Anthony’s intercession. His feastday is on 13 June.

St Anthony is known to be the patronsaint of lost things or lost causes.Things that most people would neverbelieve could happen, can happenthrough St Anthony’s intercession. The twists and turns of becomingunexpectedly ill and joining the friarswere all ultimately part of God’s greatplan, his grand design for St Anthony’slife. So too for us, when life throws usin an unexpected direction, we canturn to St Anthony to guide us andhelp us trust in the Lord’s plan.

“If you love those who love you, whatcredit is that to you? For even sinnerslove those who love them” Luke 6:32.

Imagine going out and doing somethingfor someone today. For some, it mightbe an easy job but for others, not soeasy. It’s easy to help those whom weknow but what about those we do notknow, especially those who are differentto us? Jesus taught us to love and carefor our neighbours.

Deacon Mike Ryba

from United States,

explains the

importance

of caring for our

neighbours.

CARING FOR OUR

Neighbour

Christian Living Who Then is ourNeighbour?

Jesus says our neighbours arethose whom we meet and those inneed, especially the needy andoutcasts. People may ignore asuffering race, or label a lifestyle asrepulsive but Jesus sees them withcompassion. Jesus spent most ofHis time loving those who weremarginalised by those who feltspiritually superior. Ironically, the‘Good Samaritan’ helped someonewho may not have done the samefor him.

Furthermore, when we take timeto care for those who are differentfrom ourselves, we model the loveof Christ. It is easy to love peoplelike us, but more difficult to lovethose from a diverse culture anddifferent background. We riskrejection, so we can busy ourselveswith programmes that care onlyfor people like us. We reason, “Wedon’t have the time, money orinterest to care for everyone, whileour people still have needs.”However, love looks beyond itsown and offers care!

Today whom can you search outthat is hungry, depressed, grieving, sick or has been robbed of theirrights, that you can stand in for astheir advocate for justice? Findsomeone who needs you to liftthem up. Perhaps your generositywill give hope to someone whofaces temporary setbacks. It mayrequire you to get your hands dirtyin dealing with their issuesbecause some relationships can bemessy and complicated. Care forstrangers can lead them to loveChrist, the ultimate caregiver!Matthew 25:40 says, “And the kingwill answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the leastof these who are members of myfamily, you did it to me.”
