A McLaren Vale winery (South Australia) was one of the first wineries to adopt STL, and now enjoys a strong market presence in a number of international markets including the United States and New Zealand.

Their success has led other wineries to adopt STL and build their own success stories.

A high profile, top 15 US winery recognized for building successful innovative wine brands, has adopted STL and met with remarkable success from distributors and consumers alike.

In the crowded global wine market, having a great wine is simply not enough to ensure success. You need the whole package – designed to consistently meet consumer expectations.

Above all, STL delivers three important key attributes to produce a strong competitive advantage for wineries using STL:

Convenience Easy to open and simple to reseal with no

corkscrew required.

Confi dence STL's sealing technology maintains the

quality of the wine, ensuring it is delivered just as the winemaker intended it to be.

Contemporary STL is easy to recognize and stands out

from the crowd, providing ‘cut through’ in a crowded retail environment.

STL is the only closure which combines the convenience of opening a bottle by hand, with the celebratory ‘pop’ of a cork.

Consumers around the world have adopted STL as their closure of choice. The simplicity of design and compatibility with a modern lifestyle combine to deliver a unique marketing opportunity for wineries using the STL closure.

STL consists of three parts; a robust outer cap with a tamper evident clamp that locks onto the band of a standard cork mouth bottle; an inner metal foil which provides a consistent and predictable oxygen barrier and an inner plunger which creates the ‘pop’ on extraction and reseals after use.

Ease of application from a small manual system to a high speed bottling line using industry standard capping equipment with minimal and low cost modifications make STL adaptable to a range of winery facilities.

Independent third party have confirmed STL either meets or exceeds all industry benchmarks with respect to wine making performance. (A copy of the full report is available upon request or can be found at www.zork.com.au).

Research confirms that consumers perceive STL as a fun, innovative and reliable closure.

Wineries ranging from small to medium regional companies to major international wine companies have successfully released brands under STL.

STL is a robust, contemporary wine closure which offers a genuine alternative to the performance of existing closures, and presents opportunities for wine marketers to achieve a positive point of difference with consumers in a crowded retail market.

No corkscrew. No crumbling. No cork taint. No worries.STL is a market driven, technical solution to the wine industry’s greatest challenge: closing the bottle without spoiling the wine.

BENEFITS

BENEFITS OF STL

Winemaker • Preserves the wine • Robust to handle

Marketer • Creates market differentiation • Retains the look and feel of wine

Production• Cheaper than cork and capsule • Faster and simpler to run than screw cap

Consumer • Easy to open • Convenient reseal

STL incorporates the proven metal foil barrier technology of the screw cap into a patented design.

STL snaps on to traditional cork-mouth wine bottles offering a simple yet compelling value proposition:

STL seals like a screw cap and pops like a cork!

STL offers the winemaker a competitively priced, quality-controlled consistent barrier to oxygen.

Made from durable, food-grade polymers, STL will not taint the wine or scalp its flavour. STL has been designed for use on standard, high-speed filling lines, with minor modifications.

STL is engineered to snap on to the neckband of standard cork-mouth bottles, in a positive, consistent application.

STL's unique design means it does not require the added cost of a capsule to finish the packaging presentation and is available in black and red from stock with other colours and print options on request.

STL is easily removed by hand; remove the tear tab to break the seal, pull out STL. It pops like a cork when extracted and can be conveniently resealed after use.

Offering a market-driven solution unlike any other wine closure, STL seals the bottle while preserving the integrity of the wine, the quality image of the brand and the sense of celebration associated with opening a bottle of wine.

STL closures have been designed with the environment in mind and are 100% recyclable. It is reusable, recyclable and manufactured with less green house gas (GHG) emissions than some other alternatives.

ENVIRONMENT

REUSESTL is reusable and we encourage consumers to save the closure and reuse it to reseal similar unfinished bottles.

REDUCE

STL has been manufactured with minimal green house gases and is comparable with other standard wine closures.

RECYCLE

STL is made from low desnity polyethylene, one of the most commonly used plastic in food and beverage packaging worldwide.

Coded with international material identification code (4), STL can be placed out with other recycling items for regular council collection.

STL is 100% recyclable. It can be discarded with other plastics and has undergoing specialist recycling trials with several recyclers who are recycling the closures with other polymers to make plastic lumbar, commonly used in the community, for park benches, outdoor furniture, public bollards and retaining walls.

BOTTLING

Simple• Application options for all run sizes.• Simple, adaptation to existing screw capping

or corking line.• Tolerant to bottle variation and sensitive

equipment adjustment unnecessary.• Immediate upright storage – no lay down or

inverting required.

Reliable• Low equipment maintenance due to fewer

moving capping parts.• 5+ years product shelf life (when bottled and

stored as per recommendations).• No cork taint or random oxidation.• Robust and tough – no denting at any stage

of the line – off and on the bottle.• Clean.

High Speed• Fast fill of cork mouth bottles.• Simple and fast line set up / changeovers.

CRITICAL DIMENSIONS

There are three main areas of a cork mouth finish that are important to the correct fitment of STL:

1 Distance from top of the bottle to the underside of the band.

2 Internal bore diameter of the bottle.

3 Finish quality on the top edge of the bottle must be free of defects.

manufacturing changes, and the commercially-available closure is now V5. The changes were shown to have primarily improved the closure’s resistance to pressure and leakage. Recent trials have shown the Oxygen Transfer Rate of the new versions is similar to that of V1 and it is unlikely that the recent design changes have affected the sensory performance of the closure.

• Cork and screwcap comparisons have been drawn from the primary closure trial and other published data.

BACKGROUND

• Provisor Pty Ltd was engaged by ZORK Pty Ltd to conduct third-party, independent tests of the performance of ZORK Version 1 (V1) and Stelvin® screw-cap closures, when used to seal a 2003 vintage Riesling wine. Chemical, physical and sensory analyses of the wines were conducted at monthly intervals for the first six months. Some of the chemical and all of the sensory tests were repeated at 10, 12, 18, 24 and 38 months.

• This work was supplemented by further specific tests of other improved versions of the closure.

• Since the primary trial commenced, the ZORK closure has undergone several design and

“The rigour applied to the independent evaluation of the ZORK exceeds most commercial trials and parallels benchmark closure research. I am encouraged by the performance of ZORK in the trial. ZORK is a closure deserving serious consideration by winemakers.”

Peter Leske / Independent Adviser/Industry Expert

Closure comparison tests show that the ZORK STL offers a tempting alternative to cork and screw caps, avoiding potential for taint, flavour scalping or "reduced" aromas, and maintaining product shelf life. These are all positives in an industry looking for a better closure.

Secure capper to stable surface before use.

1 Check the glass Check that the glass being used is a

standard European CE.T.I.E or GPI cork mouth bottle. This is the only suitable glass finish to use with STL. The closure MUST match the finish.

2 Set the height The bottom of the capping head should be

approximately 16mm above the top of the glass.

3 Treat the headspace After filling to the recommended height of

63mm from the top of the 750ml bottle, treat the head space with an inert gas

with to remove oxygen. CO2 gas (or solid CO2 dry ice) is recommended.

4 Check the Placement Press the cap firmly onto the bottle

immediately after head space treatment to ensure gas does not escape.

5 Seal the Bottle Place the bottle on the manual capper.

Pull the handle down ensuring that the closure has been pressed onto the bottle.

6 Check the fi tment Ensure the closure is applied correctly by

doing a visual examination. If the closure has a significant bulge and is stressed at the tear band, it has NOT been applied correctly. Confirm the capping head height has been set correctly and re-apply the closure.

Please contact your glass supplier for details and quote the finish specification number.

ZORK STORY – NAPA VALLEYDON SEBASTIANI & SONS

“ZORK has been received well on premise, particularly because the closure has some of the same features as cork. Namely you must remove the tamper seal first; and when it is opened, a light popping sound may be heard…This is a good choice for the $11 to $18 segment; however, I wouldn’t be surprised to ultimately see it used in a $25 to $35 bottle.”

Richard BrunoWinemaker Don Sebastiani & Sons

Don Sebastiani and Sons is a highly respected international wine negotiant, based in the Napa Valley, California. They are renowned as a packaging innovator in the industry and have embraced ZORK as a unique differentiator for some of theirexisting and new wine brands. They have made a long-term commitment to using the closure and now bottle five brands with STL.

Used Automobile Parts – USD $50.00/bottle sold in a 3 closure pack.

Le Bon Vin – USD$10, three varieties, grown to ~15,000 cases within first six months of sale.

Mia’s Playground – existing 15,000 case brand moved from screw cap to ZORK.

Plungerhead – New brand created for and inspired by ZORK.

Hey Mambo – New brand created for ZORK.

“Everyone who opens the ZORK on our Le Bon Vin de la Napa Valley has remarked in an overwhelmingly positive fashion.Wholesalers, retailers, consumers, even other wineries love the look, feel, sound, and practicality of ZORK, and we have big plans to move ahead with this closure in the future.”

ZORK STORY – EXPORT SUCCESS SHINGLEBACK RED KNOT

“My brother Kym first brought the concept of using the newly-developed ZORK closures on the Red Knot packaging to the table. It was up to me to prove up the technical side. This synthetic, taint-free, robust and reliable closure is both convenient and appealing to the eye. The tamper-proof nature of the seal, easy opening and resealing all add value to retailer and consumer alike. We only use the ZORK closure on our Knot range of wines and are a market leader in its use.”

John DaveyWinemaker Red Knot Wines.

ZORK, the exclusive closure used by Red Knot, White Knot and Pink Knot, is:

• Cost competitive• Easy to use• Consistent with a low oxygen transfer rate• Safe with no taint or flavour scalp • Reliable and simple to apply• Tough and durable during transport, storage

and handling

In 2003 McLaren Vale winery Shingleback teamed with Seattle-based marketers Precept Brands to create and launch the “Knot” family of wines. The initial release was 30,000 cases with a Red Knot Shiraz, a Red Knot Cabernet and a White Knot Chardonnay. The US was the target market with the wines promoted at around the USD $8 price point.

Promotion along the US East Coast resulted in strong consumer acceptance of both the wine and the ZORK closure with the 2003 vintage quickly selling out. Resellers overwhelmingly endorsed the ZORK closure which provided a clear point of difference for Red Knot.

“SOUTH AUSTRALIAN WINNER - Why not tie the knot on Valentine's Day? The 2003 Red Knot McLaren Vale Shiraz ($10), made with grapes grown in the premier region of South Australia's McLaren Vale, is a winner. It's not often such high-quality fruit goes into a bottle with a $10 price tag. Dark purple in color with subtle scents of liquorice and smoke, this full-bodied wine is plush and jammy. It's sealed with ZORK, a closure that seals like a screw cap and pops like a cork.”

San Francisco Chronicle 10 February 2005

Buoyed by the sales successes in the US, Shingleback have greatly boosted production of the 2004 vintage. A Pink Knot Rose has been added to the “Knot” family of wines with its striking colour and easy drinking style expected to attract a new generation of wine drinkers.

Driven by its US sales success, the Red Knot and White Knot wines were launched in Australia and New Zealand in June 2005 and more recently in Asia as the next step in growing this global brand.

STL Woop Woop Reds go ZORK!

McLaren Vale, South Australia – March 1, 2006 As of the 2005 vintage, all bottles of Woop Woop Shiraz and Woop Woop Cabernet, to be released in the US, will be sealed with ZORK.

"The market response for our Red Dot Shiraz in the United States has been incredible. The closure has definitely been responsible for creating sales for us," boasts owner, Tony Parkinson. “Whether at home or out of doors, ZORK is easy to open, since it doesn’t require a corkscrew, and so easy and convenient to reseal.”

“Furthermore, restaurant staff that have long battled with the sometimes awkward art of uncorking, will be thrilled with the ease of ZORK. And the uncomfortable dialogue about whether or not a wine is 'corked' will vanish.”

“ZORK addresses one of the wine industry’s biggest challenges”, states Ben Riggs, renowned winemaker and co-proprietor of Woop Woop. “It seals the bottle without spoiling the wine. And without the risk of cork-taint.”

“Every bottle of Woop Woop will be the rich juicy, full-flavoured wine I intended it to be.”

Benjamin Hammerschlag, President of Epicurean Wines and U.S. importer of all Woop Woop wines believes that ZORK will address the concerns of cork traditionalists.

“I’m confident that ZORK will excite those consumers hooked on the idea of popping a cork. ZORK provides a high-tech, aesthetic bridge while preserving the integrity of wine inside of the bottle.”
