US Shipbuilding Overview

• There are approximately 117 active shipyards in the US, spread across 26 states. In addition, there are more than 200 shipyards engaged in ship repairs or capable of building ships but not actively engaged in shipbuilding.

• The majority of shipyards are located in the coastal states, but there also are active shipyards on major inland waterways such as the Great Lakes, the Mississippi River, and the Ohio River. The top five states, Virginia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Connecticut, and California, account for 62% of all private employment in the shipbuilding and repairing industry.

• Total economic activity associated with the industry reached 402,010 jobs and $36.0 billion in GDP in 2013.

• U.S. shipbuilders delivered over 1,250 vessels of all types in 2013, worth more than $20 B. Over 80 percent of vessels delivered in the last three years have been inland tank and deck barges. Deliveries of tugs and towboats, passenger vessels, commercial fishing vessels, and inland tank barges have also increased. The oil boom has been responsible for much of the demand.

• The U.S. Navy, U.S. Army, and U.S. Coast Guard, remain an important source of demand for U.S. shipbuilders. While only 15 of the 1,457 vessels delivered in 2011 were delivered to the U.S. government, nearly all (8 out of 11) of the large deep-draft vessels delivered were delivered to U.S. government agencies (7 to the U.S. Navy and 1 to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration).

US Cruise Ship Industry Overview

• A total of 7 new ships will be added in 2015. From 2016 to 2017, 15 more new cruise ships will come online adding 9.1% to world wide passenger capacity. The ships from 2015 to 2016 will add $3.4 billion in annual revenue to the cruise industry. Carnival Corporation will be adding a total of nine new cruise ships to its fleet between 2019—2022

• The top 10 U.S. cruise ports accounted for 86 % of embarkations in 2013. Florida remained the center of cruising in the US, with its five cruise ports accounting for nearly 62 % of all U.S. embarkations. California, TX, and NY each had more than 600,000 embarkations.

• 90% of Finnish made cruise liners are operating from U.S. ports

• 60% of all cruise liners in the world operate in U.S. territory

• Miami/Fort Lauderdale is the main area for refurbishment, conversions and upgrades

• Main clients for Finns have been Carnival and Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines. They are also the biggest players in refurbishment and conversion business

• Key U.S. business opportunity beyond new builds in Finland is the maintenance, repair and conversion of ships in the U.S.

• Rebuild, upgrading and conversion of ships’ interiors is an opportunity for Finnish SME interior solution and component suppliers

• Nearly 70% of the cruise industry’s non-wage expenditures were made with U.S.-based businesses.
