Applyingtoanyoftheserviceacademiesisatwo-tieredprocess.AllapplicantsmustfirstopenanapplicationwithanyandallAcademiestheyhaveaninterestinattending.TheapplicantatthesametimeneedstoapplyforaCongressionalNominationthroughCongressmanHuizenga’soffice.EachMemberofCongressisentitledtofillfivevacanciesateachServiceAcademy.Whenavacancyisfilled,thecadetisthen“charged”totheSecondCongressionaldistrictofMichigan.CongressmanHuizengaisallowedtonominateyoungmenandwomantoaparticularAcademywhenavacancyoccursinoneofthesechargedslots,eitherbyreasonofgraduationorwithdrawal.
2. Foreachvacancy,CongressmanHuizengaisablenominateuptotencandidatesforadmission.Oneofthesenomineeswillbeofferedanappointmenttofillthevacancybytheacademy.Theothernominees,assumingtheymeettheAcademy’sminimumrequirements,areplacedintoanationwidequalifiedcandidatepool.Atthatpoint,itislefttothediscretionoftheAcademytochoosecandidatestofilltheremainingslotsinitsincomingclass.
