Tenli Grace Krauel is the youngest daughter of Curtis and Tracy Krauel. Curtis currently serves as a Captain with the Palm Beach Police Department where he has been employed with the Town of Palm Beach for over 17 years. Tenli was born in Henan, China on March 3, 2009 and adopted into the Krauel family on October 25, 2010. Tenli has three siblings; two brothers, Balin age 12, Tagin age 11, and sister Myli age 8. Myli was also adopted from China in April of 2008.

Tenli was born with a condition called Microtia Atresia. Microtia is a congenital deformity of the outer ear where the ear has not fully developed, leaving a small remnant of skin and cartilage. Tenli lovingly refers to this

as her “peanut ear” as the shape resembles one of here favorite treats. While both Curtis and Tracy originally prayed for this “condition” to be solely cosmetic and not have any adverse effect on her auditory abilities, they were disheartened to learn Tenli also suffers from Atresia. This is commonly accompanied with Microtia. Atresia means absence of an opening and simply put: Tenli is unable to hear anything out of this ear due to the nonexistence of her auditory ear canal.

Curtis and Tracy consulted with several medical professionals while Tenli completed a battery of tests, as this handicap has affected her speech and learning skills. “We have been humbled by how vital hearing is and how we take this important sense for granted,” said Curtis. “We have learned that inattention to maximizing auditory function may result in irreversible and permanent functional deficiencies. We are now seeing the adverse effects of how Tenli’s inability to properly hear is impacting her educational performance and speech development.”

Through the Palm Beach Police Foundations generosity, Tenli was equipped with a device that now assists her hearing called a Bone Anchored Hearing Aid (BAHA) Softband. This non-invasive device utilizes the bones of the skull to transfer sound to Tenli’s normal functioning ear. The BAHA Softband is an elastic headband that fits comfortably around her head with a small sound processor attached to a plastic snap connector near the base of her ear. Tenli chose a black headband to match her hair color, but has hinted around to getting other colors to go with all of her princess dresses.

In the short amount of time Tenli has been utilizing the BAHA Softband, she has seen tremendous improvement in her auditory comprehension and speech development. Her testing abilities have improved and she now on track with the rest of her peers. Tenli also appears more confident in group activities and social settings.

“We are so thankful for the Palm Beach Police Foundation and the generosity they have afforded our family,” Curtis said. “Tenli is like a brand new child. There are not enough words to express how appreciative we are and Foundation’s devotion to the Palm Beach Police family.”

The Palm Beach Police Foundation Helps Fund New Boat for the Police Department

A $170,000 donation raised from a fundraising campaign led by Palm Beach Police Foundation’s 2nd Vice President Michael Belisle, has enabled the Palm Beach Police Department to acquire a new 2015, 34-foot SeaVee with twin 300 horsepower engines. The new boat, which was built in Miami, cost $223,760 and delivered at the end of April, will be officially launched in the fall.

According to Palm Beach Public Safety Director Kirk W. Blouin, the biggest advantage to the new boat, which is appointed with state of the art electronics, is a side door that will help marine patrol officers reach distressed boaters and swimmers and get them out of the water faster. The old boat, with its electronics, had outlived its usefulness, he said. The old boat is set to be sold at auction, and proceeds from the sale will cover the difference between the cost of the new boat and the Foundation’s donation. Details for an official dedication in the fall to follow.

Town Picnic

The Foundation once again showed its appreciation for the hard work the Town of Palm Beach Employees do every day to improve the quality of life in our community by bringing them together for a very special picnic. The event, held on Saturday, November 8 at the Recreation Center, was cosponsored by the Palm Beach Civic Association. Employees from the Police and Fire/Rescue Departments to Public Works, Building and Zoning, Administration and Recreation Departments and their families came together on a very beautiful day and enjoyed a delicious barbecue, photo booth and various water activities for all ages. THE 2015 POLICEMEN’S BALL

With the close of another successful season, it is gratifying to look back on our accomplishments as we continue to plan for the future. Our mission is to support the Palm Beach Police Department’s sworn and civilian employees, which we proudly fulfill each year thanks to the support of each and every one of you.

In 2015, we had a record-breaking season! We raised more than $1 million at the Policemen’s Ball on January 15, 2015 and reached the impressive milestone with the help of our Ninth Annual Palm Tree Award Recipient, David S. Mack; our outstanding Honorary Chairmen, Annie

and Michael Falk, and our devoted Dinner Chairmen, Mary and Mark Freitas. Their collective efforts culminated in our most successful fundraiser to date on behalf of the employees of the Palm Beach Police Department.

In related news, during the 2014-2015 academic school years, the Foundation awarded more than $110,000 in education grants. Additional funds were bestowed for academic excellence, and grants were also given to support graduate students. The Foundation is currently reviewing the 2015-16 scholarship applications and anticipates awarding approximately $100,000 in funding. In addition to higher education scholarships, eligible children of Palm Beach Police Department employees can receive a full scholarship to Oxbridge Academy, made possible through generous underwriting provided by Board member, William I. Koch. The competition to gain admittance to this prestigious school spikes each year, and the Foundation is honored to provide this singular opportunity to our police officers and their families.

We are fortunate to have such a highly qualified and skilled police department, and the Foundation strives to augment its efficacy by supplying it with the best equipment and training available -- a win-win situation that results in heightened service and safety. For the past few years, the Foundation has been actively involved in helping to enhance the Town’s Camera Surveillance System, and has donated more than $250,000 towards its successful implementation. We recently donated another $50,000 to purchase additional cameras, and are happy to report the surveillance system has been a most invaluable investigative tool for the Police Department.

Further underscoring the Foundation’s mission to supplement Police Department needs, Michael Belisle, our 2nd Vice President, spearheaded a campaign to raise $170,000 to purchase a new police boat. The new boat, which was delivered at the end of April, will be officially launched this fall. Such support and success give us pause as we consider the conflicts faced by other communities throughout the nation and their respective law enforcement agencies. How fortunate we are to have the protection of our police department, which we should care for as best we can. Let us never take for granted the sacrifices they make each day to protect our homes and families. When the opportunity presents, do take a moment to say hello and introduce yourself to an officer, as they are the men and women we call on in our times of need.

Now that summer is practically upon us, know that whether you are a year-round resident, a snowbird or just planning to visit points elsewhere, the Palm Beach Police Department is here each day to serve and protect our community. We wish you and your loved ones a safe and happy summer, and look forward to seeing you again in the fall.

After nearly a decade of dedicated service, Tim Moran, the 1st VicePresident of the Palm Beach Police Foundation, the organization heco-founded with President John F. Scarpa, has been named VicePresident Emeritus. “Tim will remain a director and we can continue

to count on his service,” said Scarpa.

Since its inception, Tim has handled the daily operations of the Foundation, spending countless hours working behind the scenes. “Tim has been the most involved board member working tirelessly with The Palm Beach Police Department’s administrators, helping many of its officers receive assistance during times of need and hardship,” Scarpa said.

As the primary liaison between the Foundation and the Palm Beach Police Department, Tim has worked closely with Public Safety Director Kirk W. Blouin. “Tim is a great friend of the police department, and his efforts to support the police and community have been exemplary. His ability to connect with the officers and members of the community has heightened morale and led to improved community relations, and for that we are eternally grateful,” Blouin said.

Key to the Foundation’s mission is to provide educational scholarship funding for Police Department families and toward that end, Tim has led the charge. “Tim has overseen the scholarships for private high school education, Secondary andMasters programs for every son and daughter, including for those with special needs for the department’s employees,” Scarpa said.

Succeeding Moran as 1st Vice President is longtime Foundation Officer, David S. Mack. “Tim is a tremendous asset to the town of Palm Beach, the police department and town government. A real patriot, Tim represents every good thing America is about. I look forward to continuing our work together,” Mack said.

Mack, along with 2nd Vice President, Michael Belisle, will handle the daily operations and police department relations, and Moran will remain on the Board.
