U.S. Ambassador to Oman Dr. Richard J. Schmierer inaugurates American Week

The U.S. Agricultural Trade Office in Dubai, in cooperation with the U.S. Embassy

in Muscat, The Sultan Center (TSC), and Delta Airlines organized American Week

from September 28 to October 4, 2011. The event was inaugurated by H.E. Richard J.

Schmierer, U.S. Ambassador to Oman, at TSC’s outlet in Qurum. The event show-

cased nearly 4,000 U.S. products ranging from food to sports and household goods.

The event included a special display of U.S. products, a tasting activity, and an all-

American menu that was served at Jeans Grill Restaurant. Also, TSC loyalty custom-

ers who purchased any two American products qualified for an electronic draw to

win two roundtrip tickets to the continental U.S. on Delta Airlines. The event was a

great opportunity to showcase American products.

PetroTel Awarded Its Second Concession in Oman

The subsidiary company of the Texas-based company

PetroTel was awarded a license to explore hydrocar-

bons in Block 40 of northern Oman. PetroTel Oman

Offshore, LLC signed an Exploration and Production

Sharing Agreement (EPSA) with the Ministry of Oil

and Gas. PetroTel has committed to invest USD35

million in a number of activities during the appraisal

phase. Block 40 was previously explored by other

companies without any successful commercial dis-

coveries.

CoreSulphur to Jointly Establish Sulphur Bentonite Fertilizer Project

in Oman

The California-based company CoreSulphur along with the two Oman-based companies, Awtad Pro-

jects and Development and Takamul Investment Company, has formed Sohar Sulphur Fertilizer, LLC

to develop a major sulphur bentonite and micronutrient complex in Oman. The plant will be located in

Sohar and the basic input for the project - sulphur - will be sourced from the Sohar Refinery. The plant

is expected to be operational by the end of the second quarter of 2012.

GlassPoint to Build Solar EOR System in Oman

The California-based company GlassPoint Solar won a contract to

build a seven-megawatt, solar-enhanced oil recovery (EOR) sys-

tem for Petroleum Development Oman (PDO). The system will

be used for one of the pilot projects in southern Oman and is ex-

pected to reduce the natural gas requirement for EOR by up to

80%. This will help Oman use natural gas for other applications

and hence spur economic and industrial development.
