What’s the sCuttLebutt?the U.s. naval institute is the proud curator and guardian of more than 500 oral histories capturing the careers and highlights of notable naval professionals, including general Jimmy doolittle, Admiral Arleigh burke, and Admiral chester nimitz. the highly acclaimed and award-winning naval institute press book, Joe Rochefort’s War, draws significantly from a number of these histories. of particular note is that rochefort’s oral history was seized from the naval institute by the office of naval intelligence upon completion in the early 1970’s and not released back to the naval institute until the mid-1980s. our oral history program is supported by a generous grant from the tawani Foundation and numerous member donations. (Photo by Jen Mabe)

the naval institute seeks tax-deductible contributions to help underwrite dozens of oral histories in varying stages of completion not limited to, but including the list below:

SIEGFRIED BREYER,MIROSŁAW SKWIOT

BREYER&

SKWIOT

Siegfried Breyer was one of Germany’s best-known naval writers. After wartime service inthe Kriegesmarine, he worked on maritimepublications where he was able to use hisdrafting skills. He drew several hundredsilhouette drawings for the annual WeyersFlottentaschenbuch, and from 1958 he wrotefor Soldat und Technik, the armed forcesjournal, and published several hundred articleson naval issues in German and internationalmagazines. He specialized in the Soviet Navyand over the years he became one of the mostrenowned experts on Russian naval forces.

He also produced many books, the mostimportant of which were translated intoEnglish, including the classic Battleships andBattlecruisers 1905-1970 (1973), Battleships ofthe World (1980) and Soviet WarshipDevelopment (1992). Other books wereco-written with his wartime friend GerhardKoop, with the Swiss historian Jürg Meister, andwith Dr. Peter Lapp. In early 2002 Breyerplanned to retire from writing with his finalmagnum opus, entitled Schlachtschiffe undSchlachtkreuzer 1921-1997 (Battleships andBattlecruisers 1921-1997). However, bowing topressure from Mirosław Skwiot, he decided toprepare one last work – a photo album onGerman capital ships in the Second World War,co-written with his younger Polish friend.

Unfortunately Siegfried Breyer did not live tosee this book published. He died after aprolonged illness on 22 March 2010.

Mirosław Skwiot has been interested in shipssince his childhood in the Polish port city ofGdynia. Since 1979 he has worked for theUnderwater Exploration Team at the CentralMaritime Museum in Gdansk aboard theMS Wodnik, the museum’s own ship. His tasksinclude exploring the wrecks, but he is alsoresponsible for drawing the visualdocumentation of each of the sites. He has beeninvolved with the AJ-Press publishing housesince its foundation in 1990 and is the author ofa number of monographs on German andJapanese warships of the Second World War.His work on German artillery was published inEnglish as German Naval Guns in 2011.

During his work on the Tirpitz monograph,he began corresponding with Siegfried Breyer, and suggested the idea of collaborating on ajointly-written book on German battleships. After much discussion, and a digression intopublishing a Bismarck monograph, bothagreed that a photo album would be the idealapproach to the subject. And so, after manyyears of spent on their shared hobby, theymanaged to assemble a unique collection ofphotographs depicting German capital ships ofthe Second World War.

This book is the final fruition of that project.NAVAL

INSTITUTEPRESS

Few warship types have had as muchwritten about them as theKriegsmarine’s capital ships, eventhough they were so few in number –counting the so-called ‘pocketbattleships’, only seven ships.Nevertheless, interest amongwarship enthusiasts remains high, despite the fact that no significantnew information has been unearthedin decades. What has come to light, however, is a growing number ofphotographs, many from privatealbums and some that lay forgottenin obscure archives. These includemany close-ups and onboard shots,of great value to modelmakers, andrare action photos taken duringwartime operations.

This book offers a careful selectionof the best of these, but on a grandscale, with around 100 imagesdevoted to each ship, allowing in-depth coverage of its whole career, from launching and fitting out towhatever fate the war had waitingfor it. For sake of completeness, there are even sections reproducingthe various design studies that led toeach class, while an appendix coversthe uncompleted Graf Zeppelin,Germany’s only attempt to build anaircraft carrier, the type that duringthe war clearly displaced thebattleship as the capital ship of theworld’s navies.

MemoirsTen Years and Twenty Days

GRAND ADMIRAL KARL DOENITZ

Preface by Jak P. Mallmann ShowellIntroduction and Afterword by Jürgen Rohwer

“The Officer Commanding U-boats was like the god, Janus. One of his faces was turned towards the Atlantic, the othertowards home. With one face he watched over his U-boats farout in the Atlantic. He and his Operations staff, in the anxietieswhich beset them and in the plans they made, felt that they weresharing the grim battles, the dangers and the hardships at sea.

Whenever I possibly could, I always visited and talked to thecrews at once, as soon as they returned to base.

It was, I must confess, when I saw them thus, emaciated, strained, their pale faces crowned with beards of many a week atsea and in their leather jackets smeared with oil and flecked withthe salt of the ocean, that they seemed nearest to my heart. Therewas a tangible bond between us.”

—GRAND ADMIRAL KARL DOENITZ

Commander of Nazi Germany’s U-boats throughout the Battleof the Atlantic and Hitler’s successor as Head of State for twentydays in 1945, Grand Admiral Karl Doenitz wrote these memoirsafter serving a 10-year sentence in Spandau Prison having beenconvicted at the Nuremberg war crimes trials.

With a new Preface by Jak P. Mallmann Showell and anIntroduction and Afterword by the German historian JürgenRohwer, who knew Doenitz well and has contributed acommentary on his handling of the Battle of the Atlantic, thisbook is not only an invaluable work of reference but also anabsorbing and fascinating memoir of an outstanding war leader.

What’s the sCuttLebutt?

the naval institute press is pleased to announce the SAlE OF TElEVISION RIGHTS for Circle of Treason. rights have been

purchased by lincoln square productions – a division of ABC NEWS. “THE ASSETS,” a limited series slated to air in 2014, will be based on

the book. the show will look inside the TRUE, PERSONAl STORIES of

the soviet double-agents who were executed and the conclusion of the

cold War as told by the keepers of the nation’s secrets: the ciA. the

series will be produced for Abc by lincoln square productions.

What the Press says about circle of Treason: “the authors provide intriguing insights into the background and

tradecraft of a number of productive operations the ciA ran against the

grU and kgb from the 1960s through the 1980s. they also show how,

when operations went wrong or were compromised by traitors, sources

paid with their lives. Circle of Treason has the advantage of being written

by two intelligence professionals, not by academics or journalists, and

thus is an authoritative account of the soviet sources that were providing

the U.s. with invaluable information during the cold War until Ames

betrayed them.” — The Wall Street Journal

“What makes this volume interesting is that it was written by longtime

ciA insiders, who saw firsthand how the agency’s network inside the soviet Union crumbled. they write authentic sketches

of agents working for the ciA who were betrayed by Ames, such as dmitriy polyakov, a general in the grU (soviet military

intelligence), the highest-ranking soviet official in uniform to spy for the United states during the cold War, who was arrested

and executed after Ames identified him. this book adds an insider perspective to the bookshelf.” — Washington Post

CIRClE OF TREASONA CIA Account of Traitor Aldrich Ames and the Men He BetrayedBy Sandra Grimes and Jeanne Vertefeuille. While there have been other books about Aldrich Ames, Circle of Treason is the first account written by ciA agents who were key members of the ciA team that conducted the intense “Ames mole hunt.” sandra grimes and Jeanne Vertefeuille were two of the five principals of the ciA team tasked with hunting one of their own and were directly responsible for identifying Ames as the mole, leading to his arrest and conviction. 2013, 240 pp., 18 b/w photos, 6” x 9”

What’s the sCuttLebutt?lieutenant commander benjamin Armstrong’s 21st Century Mahan is an edited volume of lesser known essays by Alfred thayer mahan that illustrate why mahan’s work remains relevant to the 21st century and how it can help develop strategic thinking. Although mahan is most well-known for the classic, The Influence of Sea Power upon History, 1660 – 1783, his other works endure today and are presented to new generations of officers.

Alfred thayer mahan was not only a prolific author and naval officer; he was also a strong supporter and member of the naval institute. the below image depicts a page from the proceedings of the U.s. naval institute in which mahan calls the 11 April 1878 meeting to order. these early proceedings were the genesis of Proceedings magazine. mahan’s legacy continues today within the pages of Proceedings and through the authorship of young officers such as lieutenant commander Armstrong. Proceedings, the flagship magazine of the U.s. naval institute, offers an independent forum for discussion and debate (sometimes heated) on topics of interest to the sea services. As a professional journal, we have no editorial point of view but are supportive, however, of a strong national defense and of the sea services and their mission. We welcome constructive controversy and will publish articles that take on the conventional wisdom if the author can make the case for change. (Photo by Jen Mabe)

The IRS has certified the U.S. Naval Institute as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, donations to which are deductible to the full extent allowed by law.

Give $30 = offer a Leg upYour gift will provide an NROTC or Naval Academy Midshipman or Coast Guard Academy Cadet with the benefits of U.S. Naval Institute membership giving him/her the professional advantage to excel in the naval service.

Give $50 = Preserve Visual historyYour donation will preserve and digitize five historic naval photographs, many of them one-of-a-kind. Original prints are deteriorating before our eyes. Help save the visual documentation of our naval history.

Give $100 = bring history aloudYour gift will digitize one hour of the priceless voice recordings of naval heroes such as Carl Brashear and David McCampbell, providing an understanding of the effects of war through harrowing personal accounts. (As an example—with over one million iTunes downloads to date—you can listen to Jimmy Doolittle discuss his famous raid in his own voice.) Help a new generation hear their heroic words.

Give $250 = advance technologyYour generosity will digitally design half an issue of Naval History in the Apple and Android digital newsstand, helping to educate individuals worldwide about our naval history and bringing this history alive for a new generation.
