Married to the former Daisy Brun-dctt, he has a family of two ·boys and a girl.

His avocational tpursuits have led him to Scouting as Scout Master and District Scout Master-a tribute to this genial, yet reserved, personality.

not be missed. There's the seat-hogger who takes up

the space That would give some one else a sitting

place. And then there's the aisle blocker who

The flustered fare-searcher who holds up the line, .

is another of those we"d subject to fine. The crush hour shopper who shouldn't

They'd get short shift - no reprieve at all,

For blowing smoke in people's face~, And doing it in improper places.

And then there's the fellow who . builds new buses.

And failing to do so offers excuses. H c tries to beguile us with skilful ruses So many and devious that they confuse

us.

So take heed, ye resolvers of good \Vest Van,

Avoid all these pitfalls, whenever you can.

Welcome news! A saving in com-mutation rate fares between Vancou-ver and the Upper Levels has just been effected by the Municipal Transporta-tion System, and this saving has been authorized by the proper authorities with resulting 1benefits to a consider-able number of local residents.

Commencing with the New Year, the rate of ten rides for One Dollar and Seventy Cents (existing Altamont rate) will entitle the commuter to continue to his local destination on the Upper Levels without the payment of any additional fare. Thus, Upper Levels pasengers will receive a transfer to the local bus, whereas formerly they were required to deposit an additional local fare for that !portion of their trip that was on the Upper Levels bus route.

We are indeed happy to be able to make such an announcement at this time. It is just one more bit of evid-ence of our constant desire to provide the best possible service to you at the lowest possible cost to you.

There is one more sign of happy augury in this . . . your continued, loyal support; for only with your active co-operation can we effect such saving-s. So make a New Year's resolution that will be of mutual benefit: RIDE THE BLUE BUS ... IT'S YOURS!

This Business of Smoking In this day and age we are told

nearly everyone smokes. Nearly every-one, but not everyone.

At any rate, special consideration is given on the Blue Buses to those who enjoy a smoke. This is in conformity with the usual practice on Inter-City and Suburban bus routes. Another con-tributing factor is the fact that such a privilege was granted by the Pacific Stage Lines, and this made necessary similar steps on our part to meet with competitive demands.

;The extension of the smoking priv-ilege to the local areas followed from this recognition of the suburban char-acter of our operations. We wish to re-peat that the granting of smoking privileges is always restricted by the condition "in the REAR SEATS ONLY"

To those who do smoke we point out the need for courtesy and thoughtful-ness for the rest of your fellow pas-sengers. They are entitled to consider-ation, too. Confine your smoking to the REAR SEATS ONLY. (N.B. Remem-ber: CIGAR smoking is TABOO).

Experiments We've been indulging in a bit of

scientific research and experimentation. It all started when we saw a little green bottle with the name "Chloro-phyll Air Freshener". Could we use it? Well, to make a long story short, two of the buses are now trying this "freshener'' out. If the results warrant

all the other buses will be provided with the chlorophyll.

Another innovation has been in tro-duced in all the Ford buses. Through an ingenious tra,p-door grill located at the back of each bus. a down draft clears the ·bad air out of the bus, while suitably placed air intake vents intro--duce fresh air.

These and other investigations are not just New Year's resolutions. They are part of our constant effort to pro-vide maximum comfort to our fellow passengers.

A record of achievement stands be-hind Percy, of which his fellow citizens have been the chief beneficiaries. For he is a "Make Shifter'' of the first order and was responsible in no small degree for the fact that equipment was kept on the move even when there were such things as Priority Ratings and war scarcities of essential mat-erials to cope with. Percy didn't worry too much. He just make-shifted and the buses rolled.

Twenty-five years of faithful service, · conscientiously given, stand behind the

hard working shop foreman, running the gamu~ of occupations from bus driver to ferry engineer, then from shop mechanic to shop foreman. Percy has put everything he had into this work and has taught the tricks of the trade directly and indirectly to many.

An easterner by birth, he received his education in South Vancouver, moving to West Van. with his parents in 1918. Here he worked for a time on fish boats as an engineer.
