I. INTF:ODUCTION

A. HIGTORY The histo,-y of Detia(fO metal phosphide pesticides is long, dating back to the mid-1930's. In 1970 DetiaCR) GAS EX-B was introduced into the United States. DetiaphosCR), which has recently been introduced into the U.S.A., contains magnesium pl,osphide d9 the active ingredient. The manufactu,"e,-, Det i a F,-eyb",-g G~mH, West Germany was the early pioneer in the development of hydrogen phosphide as a fumigant gas.

B. PRDDUCT DESCRIPTION Both [let iaphosCR) RDTOXCR) MP and Det i.,phos(R) ROTOXCR) MT are a mixture of magnesium pl,0sphide (34% by weight), ammonium carbamate and other inerts which are pressed into tablet and/o,- pellet fo,-m. The ne.,rly sphe,-ical pell.ets are about 3/8" in diameter and weigh 0.6 gl~ams eilch. The tabLt-~1"s dIMe eithel" disc shilped (4/5" in diametel- .and 1/5" th i e~{) 0\- sphel- i eel lin shape (5/8" in d i am(-~ter) a nd we i gh 3.0 grams each. A pellet wi II produce about 0.1 qram hydrogen phosphide, the 1ablet about 0.5 gram, Both react with atmospheric moisture to produce hydrogen phosphide CPH3) in the folLowin<j way;

M<j3P2 + 6 H20 3M9COH)2 + 2PH3

Warm, humid air accelerates the reaction whi le cool, dry air has the opposite effect.

DetiaphosCR) RUTOXCR) also contains ammonium carbamate which libeyates ammunia and carbon dioxide as follows:

NH2 COONH4 2NH3 ... C02
