MISSION and HISTORY
MISSION: Increase the number of underrepresented young people who gain access to college and earn quality post-secondary degrees through Options’ counseling, training, evaluation, advocacy, and dissemination of best practices.
1986 – College Access Program Founded 1998 – Program Replication at Four NYC Sites
Launched 2005 – Options Institute Founded 2011 – NYC DOE Training Launched with Pilot 2012 – College Success Program Founded 2013 – www.nyccollegeline.org Launched
OPTIONS INSTITUTE
Since 2005, trained more than 3,000 unique individuals from more than 600 organization and school sites in NYC
More than 100 days of in-person training offered in 2012-13
Offerings: 9-day certificate course 6-day NYC DOE course Numerous stand-alone workshops on
special populations, advanced financial aid topics, etc…
NYC DOE Partnership
Options Institute together with NYC DOE Office of Postsecondary Readiness
GOAL: 1,500 DOE personnel to complete 6-day course 2011-2015 At least one person at each of NYC’s 500+
public high schools 2013-14 school year has 10 cohorts of 50
people each

By the end of the course, participants will understand:
Key data points nationally and at their own school related to college access and success
How to build and support a college-going culture in a school setting How to effectively assess students relative to their postsecondary
options How to help students choose good postsecondary options How to support students to develop strong college applications and
gain access to a range of postsecondary options How to support students around financial aid How to help students make good financial decisions related to
postsecondary education How to help specific groups of students, such as immigrant
students and students with learning disabilities
