President’s Message

I recently returned from a three day visit to the STAFDA headquarters in Elm Grove, Wiscon-sin. We received a brief tour of “the office” that manages and runs the entire organization and con-vention. It’s really more of a ma-chine than an office when I con-sider how much happens within the four walls and with a staff of three: Georgia Foley, Cathy Ush-er, and Anne Venturelli.

My visit also allowed for a short tour of STAFDA’s history as I pe-rused the pictures of all the Con-vention locations over the years and the wall of past presidents. The past presidents pictures com-memorate the legacy left behind by so many great industry pio-neers and veterans that started in 1976, with STAFDA’s first president, the late Jack Jahntz.

U.S. DoC Increases Antidumping DutiesRecently, the U.S. Department of Com-merce (DoC) issued a revision of the an-tidumping duties applicable to Chinese imports of diamond saw blades, a move that will ensure fair competition for U.S. manufacturers and their employees.

The duties cover diamond saw blades, diamond segments, and saw blade cores from China. The DoC’s announce-ment will result in retroactive assess-ment of duties on all imports of Chinese saw blades that entered the U.S. be-tween November 1, 2012, and October 31, 2013.

saw blades and saw blade parts dur-ing 2012 and 2013. The DoC concluded these companies sold diamond saw blades at unfair prices and that duties should be assessed on imports of their products.

Nearby options and their distance (in parentheses) to the Charlotte Convention Center include: Aloft Charlotte Down-town (0.2 mile); The Blake Hotel (1 mile); Charlotte Marriott Center City (0.1 mile); Courtyard by Marri-ott Center City (1 mile); Doubletree Hotel (1 mile); The Dunhill Hotel (0.25 mile); Ritz-Carlton Charlotte (0.1 mile); and the Residence Inn Center City (1 mile).

It’s hard to believe STAFDA has been around for 38 years with many indus-try influencers having retired or are getting close. This realization helped motivate me to increase my efforts in finding and developing the next gen-eration of leaders to carry the torch at Edge for another 38 years!

We also received an update on the Charlotte attendance which appears to be eclipsing last year’s Vegas atten-dance, and the Charlotte Trade Show has more booths than Vegas! There was a preview to the Trade Show lay-out in the “War Room,” which showed the exact location of all the booths surrounding the STAFDA Central hub. At this point, virtually every booth is filled but more have been added to meet demand! Charlotte has become the “Las Vegas of the East” for STAFDA and with such a strong turnout, it should prove to make an even more energetic and worthwhile meeting.

The main purpose of our STAFDA office visit was to provide some friendly cri-tiquing of my upcoming General Ses-sion speech. With Rod, Rick, and Geor-gia all armed with red pens, I received a lot of great input! It’s an honor and privilege to be able to address the group in just over a month. Additional-ly, we were joined by Ben Battaglia of the Robert Bosch Tool Group who will be giving the manufacturers address. He received similar input from all of us. I can’t wait to hear his presentation in Charlotte!

Have a great finish to the fall and I look forward to seeing you in Charlotte!

Message Con’t. from page 1

Charlotte and North Carolina have traditional charm and modern design to share with STAFDA Convention attendees looking for day tours. The follow-ing trips are offered to badged spouses/companions on November 11.

Tour 1: Asheville/Biltmore Estate (7:45 a.m. — 5:00 p.m.)Limited to 80 peopleA scenic drive from Charlotte on the Blue Ridge Parkway will bring attendees to Asheville. Dubbed the “Boulder, Colo-rado, of the East,” Asheville is tucked in the Blue Ridge Mountains and known for its serene forests, art galleries, and

historic (and architecturally diverse) downtown. Asheville is also home to the famous Biltmore Estate. Completed in 1895, George Vanderbilt’s 250-room chateau is truly a wonder of architecture and hospitality. Attendees will enjoy a self-guided tour of the house, as well as the beautiful gardens and grounds surrounding it, designed by renowned landscape architect Freder-ick Law Olmsted. They’ll view the priceless artworks and furnishings Vander-built collected during his world travels. The less glamorous, but still impressive “downstairs” fixtures of the day-to-day operations expose how the 80 servants guaranteed a luxurious stay for the fam-ily’s guests. Attendees will also be able to visit the 90,000-square-foot winery as well as enjoy lunch at one of the Estate’s restaurants.

Tour 2: A Day with the Queen: Char-lotte City Tour (10:00 a.m. — 4:30 p.m.)Limited to 50 peopleThe Queen City, Charlotte, is the larg-est city in the Carolinas and offers ev-erything you’d expect from a big city, but with small town friendliness. Sports arenas, museums, and the performing arts will give STAFDA attendees plenty to take in. The tour will venture through Uptown’s “New South” sites including

the 60-story Bank of America Headquarters, the Time Warner Arena, Dis-covery Place, and the EpiCenter where they’ll have lunch. The tour also goes to Historical “Old South” hot spots, including the Historic Fourth Ward, a preserved and charming neighborhood of Uptown featuring Victorian architecture, and the Carolina Theatre. Attendees will also visit the Levine Museum of the New South, an interactive museum and the country’s most comprehensive interpreta-tion of post-Civil War Southern society. It features the men, women, rich and poor, who helped shape the South since the Civil War.Spouses/Companions should indicate on the registration form which tour they would like to take. Tickets will be available at the Spouse/Companion Tour Desk in the STAFDA Reg-istration Area. There is no additional cost for these programs — they’re included in the registration fee.
