February Luncheons Monday, February 9 Celebrate Chinese New Year e Friendship Circle invites the return of Mary Parker who will delight us with the transcending sound of e Chinese Harp.“Gu-Zheng”, as it is called in Chinese, has twenty-five strings, and an amazing capacity to convey a wide range of emotions, giving voice to the Chinese heart. Mary studied extensively with Chinese Gu-Zhengmasters for many years, and eventually earned several prestigious awards throughout China. Her experience and love for the Gu-Zheng helps create harmony within the East and West cultural exchange. Monday, February 23 Masters of Fire: The Copper Age in the Holy Land Long before the pyramids were built in Egypt and writing was introduced in Mesopotamia, people in the Southern Levant (now Israel, Jordan, and their surrounding areas) were the first in the region to create metallurgy, temples, elaborate textiles, cash crops for export, and stratified societies. Docent Speaker Dr. Jim Kohn of the SF Fine Arts council will present the art of the Chalcolithic period (Copper- Stone Age, ca. 5500–3500 BC) and share images of hauntingly beautiful objects such as oddly shaped zoomorphic ossuaries, basalt stands with human faces, hoards of copper ritual objects, linen and wool textiles, carved ivory human figures, etc. Dr. Kohn will illustrate how the technical, social, and aesthetic developments of this period laid the groundwork for later cultural expansion. Kohn will also examine four distinct regions: the Golan plateau, the north-central plain, the Beersheba Valley/ northern Negev, and the Jordan Valley. Together, the collective production of these regions reveals the lives of the people who inhabited the ancient Near East in its early stages of cultural formation. *March Luncheons listed on page 3 of this newsletter. advanced studies of rocket propulsion engineering in Hebrew. The family was there during the Yom Kippur War. After retiring from United Aircraft in 1986, Harry taught at UC Davis and CSU Chico as an adjunct professor. Lydia and Harry then moved to Penn Valley where he was a very active member of the Jewish Community Center. Harry moved to Rohnert Park to be closer to one of his daughters in Petaluma. He lives in Emeritus at Rohnert Park, formerly Merrill Gardens, and is very active in their many activities. He leads an Opera Appreciation class and is a “lay rabbi” for about 14 fellow residents. Harry enjoys the luncheons and outreach programs with the Friendship Circle.

Harry Wolf grew up in the Williamsberg neighborhood of Brooklyn. For schooling he attended PS24, PS96 and Brooklyn Technical High School where he developed an interest for mechanical engineering. During his studies at Cooper Union College, Harry met Lydia and they married. He then took a break to join the Army. He was first stationed in Maryland, Louisiana, and Massachusetts before being transferred to the Presidio, San Francisco and finally settling in Camp Stoneman in Pittsburg, CA. Harry and Lydia had three children and lived in many places: Pasadena — where he completed his Masters degree at USC — Los Gatos, and Penn Valley. United Aircraft in Sunnyvale awarded him a sabbatical to work in Israel for one year. He loved it there so much, he returned with his wife and youngest daughter to Haifa two years later, where he taught engineering at the Technion Israel Institute of Technology for ten years. Even though Harry’s students wanted to learn English, Harry insisted on teaching his

Bamberger Family Film to be shown at the Railto“Give Up? — Never!” was the motto of Julius Bamberger, who in the early 1930s was a highly successful and respected businessman who ran a modern department store in the city of Bremen. “Give Up?—Never” is a film about the story of Julius Bamberger and his children. It describes the dramatic way this Jewish family never give up in the fight against hatred and persecution. Driven out of Germany, Bamberger had only one goal: to enable his two children live in peace and quiet. This path leads him within six years over Switzerland, France, Spain and Portugal in order to get on a ship in the United States.
