PROGRAMS AT A GLANCE

In 2015, the University of Rhode Island (URI) will offer students the opportunity to participate in multiple faculty-led programs during the summer. These programs will allow students to earn URI credits toward their URI or other university degree. All programs will provide students with health insurance.

URI Faculty-Led Programs are open to URI students and non-URI students, as well as degree-seeking and non degree-seeking students (including teachers, parents, and other professionals).

BERMUDA

Based at the Bermuda Maritime Museum, this diving-intensive field school teaches students how to survey, document, map and excavate historic shipwrecks. Participants will have a chance to examine a variety of shipwrecks from the 16th-19th centuries; to undertake systematic archaeological surveys of the reef systems; and to document, map and test excavate an English shipwreck from the late 18th/early 19th century. Students who are able to scuba dive get the most out of the course.

CAPE VERDE

Situated off the west coast of Africa, Cape Verde is a volcanic archipelago made up of 10 main islands and 5 smaller ones. Uninhabited on their discovery in 1456, the islands became part of the Portuguese empire in 1496. Cape Verde declared independence from Portugal on July 5, 1975. A majority of today’s inhabitants are of mixed Portuguese and African ancestry. During this program, students will be introduced to Cape Verdean history and its political development. Students will have the opportunity to visit and learn about key historical and political sites of the nation. Additionally, students will collaborate with the local communities and engage in a service learning project.

• Students will enroll in 3-7 URI credits in the following courses: AAF 300: Special Topics (3 credits), AAF 390: Direct Study or Research (3 credits) and/or Film 351: Topics in Film Media Production (4 credits).

• Students will be required to complete mandatory coursework prior to leaving for Cape Verde.

• Visits to museums and to public interest buildings such as the National Archive at Alfandega.

• Tours of tarrafal and Cidade Velha (The first European city in Sub-Sahara Africa).

CHINA

During the Chinese Summer School students and faculty will live together in a dynamic, supportive Chinese-only community. The program will take place at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang Province, just 115 miles southwest of Shanghai. Considered by the Chinese to be a small city, Hangzhou has a population of around 7 million. It lies at the southern end of the Grand Canal, which was constructed in the beginning of the 5th century and links the city with Beijing.

• Students will enroll in 4 URI credits in a language intensive course dependent on current speaking and writing abilities. List of courses is available online.

• Visits to the city of Shanghai, the Tea Museum, the Silk Museum, and the Farmer’s market.

interviews with local residents.

FRANCE

The URI French Summer Program will take place in Peripignan, in located in the south of France. This beautiful city is situated between the Pyrenees Mountains, the Mediterranean Sea and Spain.

This program is designed to allow students with no prior knowledge of French to fulfill their language requirements and advanced French students to take classes that will count toward their French major/minor.

their excursions.

GREECE

Students will explore the settings, structures and cultures that remain of the once mighty Greek empire. Gaze out from Pericles' greatest vision after two thousand years of war, bombardment and reconstruction. Discuss the feats of Michael Phelps and company at the site where the modern Olympics were born and ponder life's great questions in literal molds of Socrates, Plato and the gang. Travel arrangements will be handled by EF College Study Tours. Registration with EF College Study Tours will be required upon admittance to the program.

• Students will enroll in 3 to 6 URI credits.• Program A (3 credits): CLA 395: Greek Mythology: Gods, Heroes, and Humans. All

program participants required to take this course.• Program B (6 credits): CLA 395 and CLA 497: Directed Study. Directed study project

will have an aspect of Ancient Greek culture and civilization.• Mandatory online classes will be held two weeks prior to departure from the U.S.

INDIA

India is located in South Asia. Although it is the seventh largest country by area it is ranked as the second most populous country in the world next to China. India has become one of the fastest growing economies in the world.

In this program, students will travel to North India (out of Delhi), Pune andMumbai to observe manufacturing and engineering in large, medium and small factories. Additionally, students will visit a wide variety of cultural, religious, and historical sites; including temples, palaces and forts. Participants will complete a course in Manufacturing Processes or Textile Production while enrolled in the program.

instructor on content related to the course.

CALABRIA, ITALY

Calabria, on the southern tip of Italy, boasts unforgettable vistas across rugged mountains, vast golden wheat fields and age-old olive trees that grow as tall as eucalyptus. Step back into history when you visit ancient Greek and Roman ruins. Tour beautiful Byzantine churches and walk the steets of medieval towns. Learn to cook traditional dishes and visit local artisans. Cultural events abound, from local fesitivals to traditional parties, meals, music and lectures by prominent Italian and international scholars.

This two-week immersion program focuses on sustainable agricultureand food studies in Naples, Italy. Students will explore the Campania region that includes the Amalfi Coast and Islands, the rich agriculturalarea of Cilento and the archeological sites of Pompeii and Paestum.Naples is the 3rd largest city in Italy and the most important port city in Southern Italy. Within its ancient facades, endless alleyways, and distinct neighborhoods, Naples offers a blend of frenetic, nonsensicalgoings-on that overwhelm the senses.

June 2 - 18, 2015• Students will earn 3 credits for APG 301H: Anthropology of Nutrition (Honors

section), APG 301, SOC 497: Field Studies in Sociology; or APG 470: Problems in Anthropology.

• Assignments include keeping a journal during the 2-weeks, summary essay, and/or action project proposal. Italian language not required.

Academics

• Tours of Naples’ many distinct neighborhoods.

• Visits to several museums and the farmlands of the Amalfi Coast and Cilento.

• Lectures and demonstrations on Slow Food, food markets and the fishing industry.

Students will begin the program in Lima, where they will be able to tour and learn about the culture and government of Peru. From there they will fly to Cusco and settle into the accommodations at the CerviCusco Clinic. Students will set up a laboratory for cervical cancer screenings; which includes adjustments to the microscopes available as well as preparing staining equipment which may be a modified stain depending on available resources. After screening for five days, students will have an opportunity to tour Cusco and Machu Picchu.

August 20 - 31, 2015• Students will enroll in 6 URI credits for MLS 590: Special Problems in Clincal Lab

Science.• Students must complete readings prior to departure for Peru.• Students will assist in medical laboratory needs of the Inca/CerviCusco Clinic in Cusco

with an emphasis on cervical screening and diagnosis for the women of rural Peru.

Academics

• Students will explore the city of Lima.

• Visit cultural and historical sites in Cusco.

• Excursion to Machu Picchu.

SPAIN

Founded by the Romans, the city of Salamanca offers a resplendent setting for immersion in Spanish life, language and culture. Situated in the northwest region of Spain (about 120 miles from Madrid and near the border of Portugal), Salamanca boasts one of the oldest universities in the world and the oldest in Spain, as well as the country’s most magnificent examples of Renaissance and Baroque architecture, century old cathedrals and monuments.

This two-week program in Tanzania is a multicultural service learning experience, visiting the cities of Arusha, Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti. The first part of the program will be spent at the Maasai Joy Children’s Centre, where participants will work with students and teachers. The cultural experience will extend beyond the classrooms with an afternoon immersion experience of life in a Maasai village, culminating with an African safari.

July 5 - 14, 2015• Students will enroll in 3 URI credits in KIN 391: Independent Study• Students will spend time leading up to departure learning how to implement

techniques and lessons that will be used at the Maasai Joy Children’s Centre.• Students will be instructing lessons and offering classroom assistance to the teachers

of the school.• Students will also be providing professional development for teachers on the latest

techniques and strategies used in the U.S.

• Observation of daily life in Maasai Village

• Opportunities to see animals in their natural habitat while on an African Safari in the Serengeti National Park

The University of Rhode Island (URI) and the University of Tokyo (Todai) jointly offer a summer seminar on issues in coastal management. The course will focus on the likely impacts of climate change on fisheries, aquaculture and coastal development, and potential adaptation strategies. Students will meet with stakeholders in aquaculture, wild fisheries and coastal development, as well as with government officials who are involved in regulating these sectors.

Payment and Scholarship InformationPayment Information

Payments for the URI Faculty-Led Education Abroad Programs can be made by either check or money order, payable to the University of Rhode Island. Please write your URI ID number and name of your program on the check or money order.

Note: Convenience fees are not refundable. Final payments for the Summer programs are due 30 days prior to departure.

Financial Aid and Scholarship Information

Students that qualify for financial aid during the academic year are encouraged to speak with a URI financial aid advisor about the possibility of funding for the summer programs.

The Office of International Education has limited funding available to students participating in URI Faculty-Led Programs. Scholarships range from $100-$500.

To be eligible, applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications:1. Must be a URI student. 2. Have been admitted to a URI Faculty-Led Education Abroad Program or submitted a complete

application to the Office of International Education. 3. Have not received a scholarship for a previous URI Faculty-Led Program.4. Scholarship applications must be submitted to the Office of International Education by

May 1, 2015.
