Why KURA?
8
KURA ensures that these Key Design principles are observed when designing for access and movement within urban spaces defined in the development framework for affordable housing
Roads identified as an Enabler to Manufacturing, Food Security
and Universal Health Care
9
Urban Roads as Enabler
Other Projects With Strategic
Development Partners
10
Integrated Systems in which information and communication technologies are applied, in among others;
Road transport, including transport infrastructure, in transport vehicles and users,
Traffic management and mobility management at nodal and network level,
Interfaces with other modes of transport e.g. BRT and railway
E-Police cameras to record violations

Section of Outer Ring Road showing space left out for future BRT lanes
Proposed Bus Rapid Transit routes
KURA has initiated a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) concept and design in Kenya with Feasibility studies and Engineering Designs of Lines 3, 4 and 5 at advance stages in collaboration with development partners and other Government Agencies.
Proposed Viaduct Over Nairobi Railways Station

Study Stage: Preliminary level Study Area: CBD and periphery
of CBD as per the NIUPLAN concept
Higher Plan: 2 metropolitan development projects namely “NaMSIP and NIUPLAN” respecting “Kenya and Metro Vision 2030”.
Purpose: To improve accessibility to the CBD plus surrounding area and decongestion
Necessary Harmonization: The Viaduct project and ongoing NaMSIP projects i.e Green mall project (to avoid overlap of the projects)
Challenges: coordination with affected facilities (KRC Properties, Bus Terminal ( in front of railway station), Moi Avenue Parking Lot, NCC Market (Wakulima Market), etc.)

across Tudor Creek, Mombasa; together with − 1.7km New Roads − Expansion of 5km of existing roads on a 30 Year Contract, with an Availability Based Payment Mechanism
Estimated Capital Cost: $200m
Examples of Challenges Experienced due to Uncoordinated Planning
16
Encroachments by traders due to lack of Markets =[Need for RAP]
Illegal Allocation on Road Truncations = [ Need for Demolition/ enforcement/Revocations of Title
Utility Services Lying on road Construction Space = [Need for Service Relocation]
Narrow Corridors = [Need for Land Acquisition]
How They affect Road Project Timelines and Cost
