What do you call a mistake one makes over and over again? We all have bad habits, and at times we are good at covering our dirty tracks, but we sometimes fail at doing what we know is right. I know I don’t simply speak on my behalf alone but on yours as well. We have this great illusion of telling ourselves that “this time is the last time’ but in actual fact it, well, you end up having a déjà vu experience. We are often guilty of repeating the same mistake and probably justifying it.

In her poem, Postcards, Sarah Kay recites these words: “Practice does not make perfect, practice makes permanent. Repeat the same mistake, over and over” emphasizing on how we allow these very wrongs we have to become part of who we are. Failure is disappointing and it becomes harder when you let yourself down.

We don’t always win the battles we find ourselves fighting, and sometimes these mistakes are disguised as battles hence we find ourselves fighting for really what is no longer good enough because with battles there is a sense of ‘dust yourself off and try again’. Sometime, one needs to accept a beat down for what it is, try for other things.

In this month’s issue we pay some focus to the literature lifestyle us South Africans have; the campaigns and programmes are out there but are enough of us showing our interest in them for the sake of the nation and ourselves ultimately. Education is key in many aspects of our lives, some people are fortunate to tell their success stories but also mention how they either had to drop out or speak of circumstances that led them to having to find alter-native ways of survival, not all of us can repeat those stories us our own.

If your lifestyle grants you the opportunity to study, make the best of it, you are a step closer to a stable life on this society. We may hate it but the fact is we live in a time where skill is ac-companied by knowledge and education. Stretch your brain and knowledge, that can only benefit you (mostly). Maximum poten-tial is not far fetch!

Artist(s): New Kids On The Block

Album title: 10

Record label: Interscope Records

Release date: 02 April 2013

The veteran boy-band New Kids on the Block is yet to drop their new album titled 10 as a follow-up to their 2008 reunion album, The Block. Their producer, Maurice Starr, assembled them in 1984 and they disbanded a decade later but reunited in 2007. The group is comprised of brothers Jordan and Jonathan Knight, Joey McIntyre, Donnie Wahlberg, and Danny Wood. We Own Tonight makes it as their first single on the album and it is accompanied by various other great tracks such as Miss You More and Back To Life. Do give it a listen and bring out that little soft spot in you.

Gwyneth was previously feeling fatigue and fainted after a lapse of overindulgence and a tight schedule that she had to keep up with. It was revealed after paying a visit to her doc-tor that her stress levels were abnormally high, she had a de-ficiency of Vitamin D and she was anemic. An elimination diet was prescribed for her in order to help her body heal and clear out her system. But this meant foods that are not processed at all, be it coffee, sugar, eggs, meat, shellfish, wheat... Nothing! As much as Mrs Paltrow loves food like most people do, she was so concerned that the many restrictions prescribed on her diet would make her meal time boring and therefore compiled aa collection of 185 delicious and easy recipes which still fol-lowed her doctor's guidelines with Julia Turshen and it worked! Gwyneth feels and does look great. The recipes include salmon burgers with pickled ginger, power brownies, banana "ice-cream" and more! So if you want to stay healthy but continue having your favourite foods, this is the perfect source for you.

Donald stepped into the music scene as a solo act not too long ago but he has managed to grab the attention of the ever critical musical listener. From having a number of top charting songs, to opening for international guest Miguel on his South African tour, I think we would all agree that this man is getting the recognition he deserves (scooping awards and nominations too). We managed to talk to this talented individual and this is what he had to say…

@URmagazine: You scooped quite a number of awards at the METRO FM Awards, life changing moment that is… How do/did you feel about it among your many other achievements?

@DonaldInDenial: It felt good being recognized for the amount of work you’ve put in for your work. It also felt amazing knowing that my mother was also there to witness it.

@URmagazine: How has the journey been from being Donald Moatshe to being Donald Mr. “I Deserve” that everyone has been talking about?

@DonaldInDenial: The journey has been interesting but to be honest, it has always been my dream to be here and I knew what sort of things to expect and how I’ll be able to handle them.

@URmagazine: Who are your musical inspirations and why?

@DonaldInDenial: They vary, but my music is inspired by everyday life experiences.

@URmagazine: Do you think the public and critics expect too much from you?

@DonaldInDenial: I’m not really bothered about what the critics want, my fans are the most important people in my career.

@URmagazine: How hard do you push yourself?

@DonaldInDenial: Very hard, and I have an amazing team behind me so we always strive to get results everyday.

@URmagazine: What’s one bad habit that you have that people do not know about?

Career Guidance : BRAND AMBASSADOR by Lindiwe Dhlamini

Sthembiso Dliwayo, commonly known as Sprkz, is a dancer for one of South Africa’s hip hop dancer groups, The Reptilez Crew. He is also a brand ambassador for DC Shoes. He gave us some tips about the ins and outs of being a brand ambassador.

Know Your BusinessA brand ambassador is someone who represents a brand and de-pending on what the brand is, the tasks that one is assigned to will differ. As a DC ambassador my job is based on me being a walking and talking billboard for my brand; advertising the latest clothing and range of items DC has out in the market at that particular time so that people can know about it/them.

Ambassadors for brands are vital because one might find that not ev-eryone knows about the company or brand. As much as they do their best to advertise and put out their products for people to see, some of

them don’t understand nor seem to know what they are really about. The ambassadors are more of the direct form of advertising and marketing tools; people relate more to people than advertisements and marketing campaigns done via other mediums.

Finding the Perfect FaceIn most cases, a brand ambassador happens to be someone who is in the public spot light, for example celebrities, a well known figure known to the targeted community or someone people look up to.

NetworkingThe “Word of Mouth” or having ambassadors for a brand are some of the most effective tools companies may make use of in order to market a product/brand. Social networks are also effective because we live in a time where things are fast moving and social networks are seen as the trendy way of handling social and business issues.Do What is Required Of YouThe job requires you to be loyal, stay true to yourself and be conscious of the fact that you are now a representative of a brand and therefore there are no do’s and don’ts that one has to live up to. For instance, you cannot be seen wearing

Page 7: Urban Reality Magazine - April Issue No. 11

Vintage is generally clothing which was produced before the 1920 which was referred to as antique clothing back then. Vintage refers to clothing that imitates the style of a previous era.

What makes vintage so different is the fact that it’s a mixture of modern and clothes of previous eras. It takes courage to pull this fashion trend , it’s hard for people not to look at a person who is dressed arty reason being its unique and different as opposed to your jeans and T-shirt , so it’s hard not to stare. Those hand-me-downs may come in handy after all...if they are combined well. Here’s to going through your elders wardrobes!

fashionVintage meets Morden

The vintage street look as some may like to call it has been around for years, mostly seen worn by the so called hippies who are well known for their trend of Care-Free style by mixing colors, patterns and designs in one outfit; matching and fashion rules don’t apply in their culture of dressing.

The fun part about this style is its cheap, because most of the mixtures of outfit are clothes we collected from our grandparents or parents collections which cost us nothing and just mix it with anything modern and you have your vintage look.

INTELLECTUAL SWAGby Thabang Dzingwa

“Do not fear trials and tribulations. Because they are there to test your character and the strength of your relations."International PR and Communica-tion expert, Director of Ditshego Media, founder of one of South Africa's greatest initiatives Read A Book SA, and humble leader, Tebogo Ditshego. We get to know him better; find out his views around edu-cation, youth socio-economic issues adding a few "quickies" onto that, here's what he had to share with us. Read on…

@URmagazine: Who is Tebogo Ditshego?

@tebogoditshego: I am a Honours Graduate from the University of Johannesburg in Communications. I own Ditshego Media which is a leading Public Relations Agency based in South Africa. I also started the biggest social media movement aimed at encouraging South Africans to read which is @ReadabookSA and it currently has over 21,000 followers on Twitter.

@URmagazine: Amongst many things you run a very successful social media campaign, Read a Book SA, what’s the purpose of this initiative and what are you expecting to achieve from it? @tebogoditshego: Read a Book SA encourages South Africans to read one book a month and share their experiences in a mini-review on Twitter. Our goal is to improve the reading statistics in South Africa and spread the love of reading books. Ultimately, if more South Africans read books regularly we will see a great improvement in social cohesion and our country will be in a better position to com-pete with other developing countries globally.

@URmagazine: The youth today in South Africa is exposed to many options in life, but we still face struggles. From your end, what are the ones you've identified? @tebogoditshego: A great struggle is the lack of equal opportunities for all South Africans. Without a good education it becomes even more difficult to access opportunities necessary to reach ones goals, which is why it is even more important for individuals to embrace the love of reading.

@URmagazine: What book are you currently reading, and what kind of books interest Tebogo? @tebogoditshego: I am currently reading "SummerTime" By JM Cotzee and I just finished "The Intelligent Investor" By Benjamin Gra-ham. I am interested in books about entrepreneurship and investment mainly because I run my own business and they have enlight-ened me with the knowledge necessary to excel in my craft.

@URmagazine: What’s your vision of a perfectly educated South Africa?

@tebogoditshego: My vision is to see South Africa become a first world country which is innovative and achieves economic growth of over 6% yearly.

@URmagazine: Describe your thoughts about our Educational system. @tebogoditshego: I think we have a great education system, but parents and communities need to play an active role with govern-ment and the private sector to work on the quality of education and school infrastructure in township and rural schools.

Page 9: Urban Reality Magazine - April Issue No. 11

@URmagazine: On that note, you've partnered up with the Sibusiso Leope Educational Foundation (Slef). What’s the relationship? @tebogoditshego: Sibusiso Leope works together with several other stakeholders to play an active role in motivating the youth to become the best they can be through various initiatives such as our bursary drives, school visits, community outreach and social media campaigns as well as seminars.

@URmagazine: We've been seeing the #IntellectualSwaggUniversity/CollegeTour. Can you tell us more about this tour? @tebogoditshego: We will be releasing official details of this tour through an official press release in the middle of August, so be on the lookout for that. @URmagazine: Your thoughts on digital migration?

@tebogoditshego: Well it makes communicating much easier and it makes the world a global village. Costs to communicate are much cheaper but if overused it can be a bit of a distraction.

@URmagazine: How do Social networks help you in the business you are in? @tebogoditshego: It helps me profile the businesses and what's great about social networks is that information dissemination has been decentralized so everyone can communicate key information to a large audience.

@URmagazine: Are the poor getting poorer and the rich getting richer in South Africa? @tebogoditshego: The divide between the rich and the poor needs to be divided but South Africans are generally getting richer.

@URmagazine: What other projects is Tebogo working on and what does the future hold? I am working on erecting libraries across South Africa with the team at the South African Reading Foundation which runs @Reada-

Something thrilling is taking place in South Africa – something that may just renew the spirit of a people. The “Mzansi

Spelling Bee “is an engaging game where education, sport and entertainment meet with a refreshing new look at

South Africa. Despite an overburdened education system, children from all over South Africa are taking the challenge

to be South Africa’s champion speller. We need your help bringing this phenomenon to the nation. The Mzansi Spelling

bee is an impassioned, heroic and electrifying spelling competition that show case children ages 9-14 from 5 provinces

at their very best.

In her poem, Postcards, Sarah Kay recites these words: “Practice does not make perfect, practice makes permanent. Repeat the same

mistake, over and over” emphasizing on how we allow these very wrongs we have to become part of who we are. Failure is disappoint-

ing and it becomes harder when you let yourself down.

Children from rural, urban, private, state, home schools, black, white will compete as equals - words bind everyone together. South

Africans from all walks of life will be absorbed in the spellers’ journeys, struggles and triumphs to become the last speller standing.

Children from Gauteng, Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal, Western Cape and the Eastern Cape will have the opportunity to represent their

provinces. This national competition will give us all a reason to be proud of the places we call home. The spelling bee is a part of a

growing international movement – we all use words and this word competition has people around the world at the edge of every letter

spoken. The winners of the Mzansi Spelling Bee will represent South Africa at the MaRRs International Spelling bee, which has taken

Asia and Arabia by storm.

At the heart of the spelling bee is a desire to help South African children learn to enjoy reading and the possibility that words have

to offer. This will need every single one of us to help, encourage and offer the loudest cheer in saying we believe in our children. The

Mzansi Spelling Bee is an incredible opportunity for parents and community to get involved in a fun activity in support of education.

The spelling bee will help South Africa face her literacy crisis by improving children’s vocabulary, spelling, reading and confidence in

their own ability.

The Mzansi Spelling Bee will share the journeys of our brave spellers in a 13-part docu-reality TV show that will show the Nation and

the world the courage and talent of our children.

Furthermore, the Mzansi Spelling Bee is also launching a volunteer program involving citizens in the spelling bee. People are request-

ed to volunteer their time and help with the Spelling Bee events. Volunteers will help with the administration, minding the spellers

and the general work involved in putting together the bee event.

The Mzansi Spelling Bee is truly a community event and not only professionals are requested to offer their help in making it happen

but high school learners and students are also welcome to get involved in the event therefore if you are interested in volunteering for

the SA Spelling Bee, you may contact Ntsako on [email protected].

Peter Pan - the tale of boy living in Neverland, a place of happiness, fun and games, laughter and so much more. A place where everyone living there was immune to this ‘terrible disease’ known as growing up. During the night, whilst the adults were asleep, Peter would take Wendy and her brother to this magical place, where they could escape from the difficulties of the real world, and return them in the morning. Neverland seemed like a nice place where one could be young forever, but like most of us, Wendy made a choice to grow up, face life, and never return to Neverland. In the real world, there are a number of Peter Pans float-ing around in their personal Neverland. The Peter Pan syndrome is a disorder where one believes that they will never, and must never grow up. This disorder can affect both males and females, but it seems to affect men more. These individuals seem to be unable to take on responsibilities; they avoid commitments, and have a very low self-esteem, but come across to the rest of us as though they’ve got it all together.

This syndrome is believed to be caused by over protec-tive parents who allow their children to develop a de-pendency on them. These people have not developed the necessary skills to confront life’s challenges so they rather avoid reality. They see the world of adults as one filled with many problems, and glorify and celebrate childhood which is why they prefer to remain in a child like state.

Some signs that someone might have this psychologi-cal disorder may have emotional outbursts ranging from extreme happiness to extreme anger. They become anxious when they face criticism, problems, or a require-ment to commit. They are unreliable and manipulative in certain situations but see no wrong in their actions. You may notice some of these people in your life. They may be those individuals who are forever changing part-ners, because when the relationship requires an actual commitment they back out of it. It could be those indi-viduals who are forever changing their courses in tertiary because they’re undecided and are not able to commit to one thing. It could also be those students who study

forever because they are afraid of the responsibilities and independence that comes with finding a job and working. People suffering with Peter Pan Syndrome need a ‘Wen-dy’ in their life. These individuals are the support sys-tems of he sufferers, allowing them and enabling them to remain in their child like state. These enablers accept and deal with all the things the sufferer doesn’t do, in order for Peter to exist and survive. They make decisions on behalf of the sufferer, take on their responsibilities, and always rationalise and justify their unreliability. The problem with the Peter Pan Syndrome is that often the one suffering from it doesn’t recognise that there is a problem. If they do happen to realise that there is a problem he often believes he isn’t a part of it. This makes getting the correct psychological assistance difficult. The cycle may just continue, and like in the fairy tale, Peter Pan remains in Neverland forever. If the problem is recognised then it may be treated through Wilder-ness therapy which focuses on family dynamics, helping them find solutions, cognitive behaviour, and transper-sonal counseling.

Sex & Relationships:

A male friend recently alluded to the fact that just because I am biologically female or that I wear a mini or slap on some make-up doesn’t make me sexy. Needless to say I was shocked, just kidding I of course knew that sex appeal has nothing to do with biology, the clothes we wear or the amount of make-up one can carry-off.

So what is this sex appeal?

Can we buy it? Do we wear it or are we born with it? I did some asking and this is what I found out from my male friends and col-leagues.

NB: Different strokes for different folks.

Men, different as they are, seemed to agree that brains, ambition, confidence, trustwor-thiness, and independence are the traits which they mostly regard as sexy in women. They also admit to lusting after the oc-casional girl in the mini dress but that’s all skimpy clothes inspire, just lust.

Height and weight took me hours to figure out but this is the gist of it: when it comes to height the taller guys said they didn’t mind how tall or short someone is, whereas the shorter guys did prefer short girls. All the guys also agree that weight is a girl issue,

Tribalism and racism showed their ugly heads now and again but most of the guys seemed to agree that colour and culture hold no water when it comes to sex appeal.

Smoking and drinking were a bone of conten-tion but from what they said this is what I could decipher: smoking is not a ladylike habit, and drinking although more acceptable is not so at-tractive when it gets to the point of throwing up or bar fights.

The superficial stuff like make-up and hair caused much debate but what you should know is that if you are going to make an effort, make a worth-while effort. Men know the difference between quantity and quality, if you are going to get a weave let it not be cheap, if you going to put some make-up on then do it right because like I said before guys know the difference and most importantly they appreciate the effort.

My favourite was when I asked the gentlemen about perfume, they all said “nothing drives a man wilder than a woman’s smell even if it’s just soap”, one guy put it so beautifully when he said “perfume leaves a long lasting memory and cre-ates an identity”.From all of the above I deciphered that nothing is sexier than being confident and just being you don’t over do anything and too short or too plas-tic won’t do anything for you. Also remember that it boils down to PREFENCE!

Almost every day I read about technology, but only a few of these are things people spend the whole year waiting and circling the rumour mill for details. Today I’ll look at some of the most popular of these technology marvels.

TECHN

OSPACE

Google Glass

Google’s wearable computer which in theory and as far as Google has been able to show us will allow you to stay in tune with your digital life while living your normal life un-disturbed by having all you notifications and interactions pop-up right in front of your eyes. The glasses will connect with your Google account and will allow you to use all or at least most of Google’s services using only a few gestures; waves of your hands and voice commands.

Samsung Galaxy S4

The recently announced new flagship phone of what is currently regarded as the biggest company in smartphones at the mo-ment, the S4 improves on last year’s Galaxy S3 model in several ways, the most amazing of these being its processor and graphics module. The S4 will come in two models but the one everyone will be paying attention to is the one that will come with Sammy’s new Exynos 5 Octa 8-core CPU giving the phone a performance boost of note and well above any other smartphone can claim towards.

PlayStation 4

Announced just before CES 2013 the PlayStation 4 is set to be a revolutionary gaming system, although thus far all we’ve been treated to are device specifications and the new dual-shock 4 controller (pictured right). No one ex-cept the team working on it has an idea what the system will eventually look like. From what we can judge with the specifications we’ve been given it’s going to be Sony’s most powerful offering yet. Of course the guys over at Microsoft are also looking into the new offering from Sony while they work on the next Xbox, rumoured to be the 720 successor to the Xbox 360.

Kinetic 2.0

Rumoured to launch with the next Xbox (720) the Kinect 2.0 will get move sensitive cameras and new firmware in order to detect your movement more accurately during gameplay. It’s assumed that it will be accurate enough to read your lips and track your fingers with incredible precision. All this will require a new USB 3.0 or Intel Thunderbolt connection to be able to move that amount of data for processing. Naturally the guys over at Microsoft are keeping this secret close to their chests during development.

Illumiroom

Ever felt like your computer or TV screen just wasn’t big enough for you to experience your game fully? “Illumi-room” is theorised to solve that problem by projecting the areas of your game that wouldn’t otherwise fit on your chosen screen onto the surrounding walls within the room you’re in. the technology will make use of a set of sensors , the Kinect 2 and a projector to scan your room’s surfaces and project the game correctly onto those surfaces.

iPhone 5SApple's favourite letter, S, almost all of its recent phone models have been over shadowed by the launch of an S version and with the widespread disappointment felt by iPhone fans worldwide with the initial release of the 5 it’s no surprise that their releasing an iPhone 5S. The biggest changes being looked at to come with the 5S are NFC capabilities and built-in wireless charging. Both of which were presumed would come default with the iPhone 5 as they fit Apples minimalist style but sadly were unexpectedly ex-cluded.

Top with the remain-ing goat cheese and drizzle with olive oil. Feel free to add some of your favourite ingredients if they blend in well.

Enjoy :)

Ngazibini Sigwili simply can't stop smiling every time the topic of his mother, Bulelwa Sigwili, is brought up to discussion. He relentlessly keeps praising her for his recent cricketing success. The success' of him being selected for the SA Youth U19 squad in January earlier this year is a dream in which he’s always wanted to fulfil. This is after his mentor and Border U19s cricket coach, Raymond Booi, praised the left-handed fast-medium bowler's talents; advising him about the ability he has to make history for his school, Hudson Park High School which is based near the coastal areas of East London, and for Border Cricket -which Sigwili treasures dearly.

Sigwili, 18, who’s currently doing his matric at Hudson Park High School, has always associated himself around positive people since the tender age of nine. It was around that age when a group of his peers insisted he should continue playing cricket than to pursue a rugby career -a sport which Sigwili was highly passionate of. However, the young Sigwili didn't understand what all the fuss was about. To him cricket under the swell-ing East London heat, on the George Randall Primary School cement wicket, took far too long;

drained his entire afternoons which never left him amused when he had to walk back home in the late sunset hours of the afternoon. It was un-til Sigwili's left-handed deliveries slowly started drawing familiar crowds of various school pupils from around the area when Sigwili began to no-tice the raw talent he possessed within him.

"It was at George Randall Primary School where my cricket career all began. I started seeing peo-ple being extremely happy when they would come watch me bowl after their classes in the af-ternoon. Some people who were in George Ran-dall Primary School before but were then in high school, would go back to the primary school just to watch me bowl. That's when I knew that I should start focusing a little on my cricket." said Sigwili while reminiscing about all those incred-ible moments.

After much success in the Standard Bank U13 cricket week representing Border, Sigwili was soon approached by Hudson Park High School where he received a three-year scholarship with the prestigious school. It was also in Hudson Park where Sigwili was highly inspired by Chev-rolet Warriors All-rounder, Ayabulela Gqamane. In 2011 Sigwili was selected amongst 30 other cricketers from across the country for the Cricket South Africa (CSA) National Academy. This was a set-up by CSA which closely watched school cricketers around South Africa in an 18 month pe-riod for National Academy selection. His superb form in the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola U19 Cricket Week guaranteed him a squad selection into the SA U19s squad for the Youth Test and ODI series against England U19s.

Many of the school cricketer’s first encounters with SA U19 coach, Ray Jennings, are always per-ceived as a dreading story; but luckily for Sigwili, his first encounter with "The Jet" was in a more peaceful environment; away from all the heart-throbbing trials. "Coach Jennings wasn't with us at the national camp, so my first encounter with him was when I had initially made the SA U19 side. Since I started working with Jennings, I've managed to reach certain fitness levels I never thought I would because of coach Jennings" humbly explained Sigwili.Unfortunately it was a groin injury that saw Sig-wili side-lined from the Coca-Cola Youth Test se-ries against England in the latter days of January this year. Not feeling down and dusted by the exclusion from the starting XI, Sigwili kept on re-habilitating his groin injury with SA U19 physio-therapist, Megan Dutton, ensuring himself to be fully fit for the upcoming Coca-Cola Youth ODI series which was then to be the following clash with the British visitors in February.

It was in the Youth ODI series against England where Sigwili's SA U19 team continuously dis-played sterling performances throughout the series to see England U19s being white-washed 5-0 in the series. It took a much motivated Sig-wili, who finished with 12 wickets in the series, the most wickets taken by a bowler in the Coca-Cola Youth ODI series, to perform. Sigwili took a thrilling 4/43 in the 4th Youth ODI match which saw him walk away with the man of the match prize.

So what's next for the East London-based rising superstar? According to Booi, the Border Cricket Union is assured to look after him –even if it means leaving Sigwili in the hands of the East-ern Province Union, its cricketing neighbouring union. “As Border Cricket we are going to look

after him. We shall try pulling all strings to put him into an institution he desires to further his cricket and education, even if that means him moving to Port Elizabeth and studying at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. The main objective with Ngazi [Sigwili] is for him to play for the Chevrolet Warriors in the next couple of season when he’s ready to play pro-fessional cricket. His development shall be very vital for Eastern Cape cricket as a whole as we are short of left-handed bowlers,” said Booi.

LET FREEDOM REIGN

By Lindiwe Dhlamini

An annual celebration celebrated by all South Africans on the 27th of April known to be Freedom Day is a very significant day on the South African calendar. We celebrate freedom and it commem-orates the first post-apartheid elections that were held on that day in 1994 in which the franchise did not depend upon race. It marks the end of over 300 years of colonialism, white racial domi-nation, segregation and the establishment of a new democratic government led by Dr. Rolihlala Nelson Mandela whom we refer to as “The Father Of The Nation” or “Tata Madiba.”

As most may see it as a holiday to go out and have fun with friends and family or as a day off from work or school, the occurrences of this day served as a life changing moment, a moment which changed the path of South African history after a long and tension driven period- ridden negotia-tions held between 1991 and 1992 whereby the South African government, the ANC (African Na-tional Congress) and the SACP (South African Communist Party) as well as other liberation move-ments engaged in political talks.

The 1994 elections paved a way towards the new constitution and a new democratic state and they took place in a peaceful atmosphere though there were several threats of violence during the whole process. Out of 22.7 million eligible voters in South Africa at that time, 19.7 million people voted and the election was won by the current ruling party, the ANC. After winning the election, the ANC formed the Government of the National Unity which was led by the president of the ANC by then (Nelson Mandela) who became the first democratically elected President of the country.

At the first anniversary of South Africa’s non-racial elections, Mr. Madiba gave quite a powerful speech stating that wherever South Africans are across the globe, our hearts beat as one as we renew our common loyalty to our country and our commitment to its future. As the South African generation, we live to taste the fruits of freedom and as we celebrate 19 years of Freedom, let us remember all the brave men and women whose struggles and sacrifices made it possible for us to enjoy the benefits of democracy today.

LET’S CELEBRATE THE VICTORY… BE FREE!!!
