Bird Control

It is important to understand the different methods that are available for bird control in New Zealand to achieve the best results. Different products attack different senses of the birds, and so it is always recommended to use a combination of products for the most effective bird control and to prevent habituation. For example, set up a sound repeller, visual scare and a roost inhibitor for a three-way hit. The most common mistake is when one product is used by itself and may only have an effect for a short time. It is very important to remove old nests, clean up, and set up a whole package together.

Why Effective Bird Control is Important Cost of maintenance: Pest birds cost individuals and businesses millions of dollars each year in clean-up expense, repairs, and damaged equipment. Large individual companies are spending in the six-figure range.

Corrosive droppings: The corrosive effects of bird droppings can cause irreversible damage – defacing rooftops, walkways, walls, vehicles and equipment. Bird droppings quickly turn to salt and ammonia; after rain, electrochemical reactions speed up the rusting process. These acidic droppings eat away at paint, concrete and metal, and can eventually cause structural failure.

Property damage: Birds are destructive to property, equipment, and products. They interfere with operations in many ways, endangering themselves and workers – pest birds entangle themselves, in machinery, block ventilation ducts, cause fires, peck holes in roofing and utility poles, bring down power lines, and cause hazardous and even fatal aircraft bird strikes.

Spread of disease: Birds are known to carry over sixty transmissible diseases – some potentially fatal. Bird droppings help to spread disease when fecal dust enters living areas or when someone enters contaminated spaces and starts breathing in fungal spores.

Fog Force™ Bird Repellent

HOW DOES Fog Force WORK? MA is a sensory repellent and reacts with the trigeminal nerves in the beak, mouth, gizzard, eyes, mucous membranes and throat of the bird causing a brief, burning sensation. The birds must leave the treated air space in order to avoid the reaction. Over time and after several exposures to the MA haze, birds will begin to associate their negative reaction to the property itself and will stop returning to the area.

Fog force is an amazing bird repellent that has just recently become available in New Zealand.It is a food-grade formula that has been used in USA for many years and has a soya oil base. The active ingredient is an extract from the concord grape and is called Methyl Anthranilate (MA).

- Dispensed as an aerosol or a vapour into the air. - Causes pain to the birds when they breathe it but causes no long-term harm. - Has no effect on mammals but works on all bird species. - Has a pleasant grape smell to humans. - Food grade formula that is made from ingredients that are naturally produced in plants. - Use undiluted.

Relevance of Particle Emission Sizes (The diameter is measured in microns. There are 1000 microns in a millimetre.)

Less than 1 micron – Smoke. Thermal Foggers produce these emissions. This is very effective on all birds due to the huge number (billions) of particles.

1 to 5 micron – Vapour and Haze. The Cobratech 700 produces these emissions. This causes medium irritation to birds. It allows for very economical use of the repellent but may take longer to shift the birds, especially small birds.

10 micron – Haze. The special spray nozzle on the Cobratech 500 produces these emissions. This causes strong irritation to birds and quickly trains them to leave. Particles smaller than 10 micron are lighter than air and naturally rise.

20 micron – ULV Foggers. The larger particles are very painful to birds and cause an immediate reaction, especially if they are flying through it. More repellent is used.

If just 1 millilitre (ml) of Fog Force was divided into 5 micron particles, there would be 15 billion of them!

Important Points of Interest: – Ÿ Resident birds are much more difficult to shift because of their emotional attachment to the location. Ÿ Mother will not leave her young, and any flightless young will not leave until they can fly. Ÿ If you smell it, they can feel it. Ÿ The larger the bird, the more sensitive. Ÿ Birds breathe up to 30 times faster while they are flying, so Fog Force is most effective during flight. Ÿ Don't allow Fog Force to wet painted areas or to contact plant foliage. Ÿ Use integrated programs with multiple irritation and behaviour changing actions. Ÿ No single bird control system is a 'set it and forget it'. They all need to be monitored and serviced.

The Cobratech 700 is designed for very economical and long term maintenance of bird control.

A precise dose of tiny particles is produced in the mixing chamber. A blower fan mixes air with the smallest particles and forces them out the twin outlets as a dry semi-transparent vapour. The larger particles are trapped and drain back into the tank. The vapour is lighter than air and naturally rises, even in wet weather. The 700 is very quiet in operation with the sound levels similar to a fridge or freezer.

On an average setting, the large 6 litre tank will only need refilling every 3 months.

In conditions of high bird pressure from resident birds, machines with larger particle size outlet should be used for the first 2-3 months.

The Cobratech 750 includes all the smart features of the 700 as well as an aerosol nozzle for repelling stubborn resident birds. After set up, it is highly recommended to use the aerosol nozzle for the first 1-3 months. The larger particles are more painful, and quickly train the birds to keep away. It can be used inside or outside.

The machine can then be simply switched to emit vapour for very economical and long term maintenance of bird control. In some situations, it may be necessary to switch back to aerosol emissions for a brief period at the start of the nesting season.

The Cobratech 200 Controller is designed to be set up near an air compressor and a 230 volt

power supply. It incorporates an air pressure regulator and a water trap. The electronic controls are programmed to release compressed air to the diffuser modules according to the user requirements. A manifold with 6mm air lines can be connected to the outlet and the modules can be up to 100m away. Up to 16 aerosol nozzles can be maintained with one controller. Automatic Diffusers

Ecogard - new economy diffuser equipment for sites with compressed air.

This series is the same in principle as the Cobratech 200 and 300 but uses less components, with lower cost. The 230 volt Controller is set up to suit the application and is programmed to control the air flow to the Diffuser modules. The effective emission rates can then be adjusted from 1ml per hour to 35ml per hour. The Controller can run up to 10 Atomizing Modules within a 100m radius with 6mm airlines. It includes a 24 hour timer with 30 amp capacity which can also be used to switch an air compressor (up to 2hp).

The Atomizer module has a special fine spray nozzle with emission particles averaging 10 microns in size. The coverage for one module can be up to 2000m² depending on air flow, the degree of bird pressure and whether a food source is available.

The Vaporizer module emits particles less than 1 micron and uses very little repellent. It can be used to maintain an area after the birds have been forced out with the Atomizer.

Outlet ManifoldsThe manifolds include shut-off valves on each outlet to give easy control to each module. These are available in a large range of configurations to suit most applications.

AirlineHigh quality polyethylene tubing is supplied to each module and is available in several colour options. Black is UV stabilised and is the most commonly used. It can be supplied in lengths of 25m increments.

curb animal & bird repellentCurb comes in powder form and has a great repelling effect on all mammals and birds. It creates a sense of danger when the animal comes close. It is commonly mixed with water at 1:10 and sprayed onto building surfaces. Curb will also repel rodents.

Very successful in Europe & Australia - The soluble powder formulation contains 880 g/kg of synergised aluminium ammonium sulphate virtually odourless to humans. The repellent does wash off in the rain so indoor applications will last longer than outdoor applications.

NOTE: In severe infestations around buildings or in vehicles, the repellent can be applied directly as a concentrated powder.

Mix rates: For crops or large grass areas, mix at a strength of 5-10% depending on the amount of pest pressure.For Birds or Rodents around buildings: mix at 10% (100 grams per 1 litre of water.)

for crops & grass areas Migrate is a food grade repellent spray for agriculture. It makes treated crops unpalatable to birds. It works as a sensory repellent and irritates the mouth and stomach of birds who try to ingest the treated crops, without causing adverse physiological reactions in the birds. Migrate affects the behaviour while causing no actual harm to the bird. As a result, birds will avoid feeding in places where Migrate is present, diverting them to other feeding areas. So far, no bird species has been found, that is not affected by this bird repellent.

Use on high value seed crops, sweet corn, sunflowers, cherries, blueberries, stone fruit, table grapes, etc. Also repels unwanted waterbirds like Canadian geese from grass areas near lakes. Not recommended on grapes used for wine production.

Recommended mix rate with water for most crops 1:20 Migrate has been formulated from food grade ingredients with an active ingredient, methyl anthranilate (MA), that meets US Food Chemical Codex specifications. Migrate is an aqueous slurry of micro-encapsulated product that is mixable with water in any ratio.

If wet weather is imminent, apply Migrate with a sticking agent like Nu-Film 17 for best results. Do not use a spreader.

PURIVOX Triplex VStationary electronic controlled banger which can be set to fire from one to four times per cycle. With the shot volume of around 86 decibels at a distance of 100 metres this model covers an area of 1 to 5 hectares. The shot-volume can be regulated by the length of the megaphone. Thanks to its construction it can be easily transported from place to place to increase the effectiveness.

This model is a self-rotating, electronic banger which can be set to fire from one to four times per cycle. The barrel and the electronic unit are set up on a tripod with a standard height of 2.1 metres. If required, the tripod can be extended to give additional height. Each bang is fired into a different direction because the barrel rotates freely on the central pivot bearing. Because of the different direction of each shot, the pitch appears different to the birds and therefore enhances the effect. Furthermore some animals are driven away merely by the rotating movement of this particular model. The Carousel gives proven crop protection for around 4 to 25 hectares depending on the bird species and the type of crop.

Alphachloralose Wheat Use on Sparrows and Finch

ALPHACHLORALOSE BIRD BAITThis is a narcotic which acts by anaesthetising rather than killing nuisance birds.

Drugged birds are stupefied which allows target birds to be captured and destroyed while non-target birds may be revived. Best results are achieved in cold weather. The affected birds will very likely succumb to hypothermia.

Alphachloralose PeasUse for pigeon control

Alphachloralose Paste Use for birds like starlings that won’t eat wheat. Can be spread on bread, added to mince, fat or whatever bait the pest birds will eat. 500 gram tubes.

To obtain maximum effectiveness, all target birds should be pre-fed with non-toxic bait for 3-4 days prior. The best results are achieved by feeding early each morning.

It is highly recommended to have at least 2 sound chips per machine for the best results &

to prevent habituation.

Ultrasonic sound equipment

The QB 4 Ultrasonic harassment sounds are emitted at a high frequency which is virtually inaudible to humans, but is very annoying to birds and rodents although it will not harm them. The output sound frequency can be set to modulate between 22 and 30 kHz to create an environment the birds can’t get used to.It is especially designed for mounting on the ceiling of large buildings.An optional clip-on flashing strobe light is available for an added harassment to the birds.

What is BYE BYE BIRDIE? Bye Bye Birdie is the ultimate bird repeller based on the scientific principles of geomagnetic field. Using a specialised magnetic system (patented in US and Japan); Bye Bye Birdie emits 2000 gauss magnetic field which disturbs the geometric field (2 gauss). version of the Power Wing. Sold in pairs with opposing magnets. The magnetic field is effective 360 degrees from the main body. It is recommended to set up in pairs every 7 to 8 metres. The effective range of the BBB Twin is a radius of 8m at 4m high, and 5m radius at 2m high.

Alternatively, they can be attached to a cable and mounted 600mm above rooves or surfaces. For best results, place one every 3 to 5 metres.
