Item Name: Royal Hotel Archaeological SiteLocation: 26 Bendemeer Street, Bundarra [Uralla]

State Heritage Inventory Study Number95.8

Current Use: Park and archaeological site

Former Uses: Hotel site

Statement of Significance:

Bundarra Royal Hotel archaeological remains have historic associations with an era when Bundarra was a major transport and civic services centre.. The site has archaeological research potential about the former substantial brick building including sub-surface artefacts and relics. The ruins remain visible and provide local and visitor interest in the Bundarra townscape. The former Royal Hotel was representative of the development of Bundarra as a major service town where the needs of the travelling public and local residents were met by a large two-storey hotel.

Historical Notes or Provenance:

The Royal Hotel was run by John Leverett for some years before he moved to Armidale in 1882. When Stephen Smith and Alfred Sullivan became licensees the name changed to Killarney Hotel for 15 years until reverting back to its original name in c1895. By April 1901 P.W. Baldwin conducted the billiard table at the hotel. The very substantial two storey building was totally destroyed by fire on Monday June 1952 and damage estimated as £20,000. At the time the licensee of only one week was Alan Buck from Newcastle and the owner was W. Donaldson of Sydney. A bucket brigade was formed and water was pumped from two wells; one at the hotel and one at the police station located across the road. The coroner reported that there were no suspicious circumstances. As there was a material's shortage following World War Two much of the salvageable building materials was then used to erect other town structures, leaving only the foundations as seen today. The early publicans recorded in the N.S.W. Licensing Records are: ROYAL Hotel licensees 1868-1871 William Regan; 1872-1874 Stephen Smith; 1877-1882 John Leverett; 1895 Charles Chapman; 1901-1904 John Eather; 1905 James McDonald; 1909 Patrick Maher; 1910-1911 George Carter. KILLARNEY Hotel licensees 1883 Stephen Smith; 1885 Alfred Sullivan

Item Name: Buddarra General Store-'The Brae' and StorehousLocation: 30-32 Bendemeer Street, Bundarra [Uralla]

State Heritage Inventory Study Number95.9

Current Use: General Store

Former Uses: General Store

Statement of Significance:

The General Store Complex consist of the General Store with underneath cellar, the House called 'The Brae' and Storehouse. The general store complex is highly prominent on its street corner and in the centre of the Bundarra streetscape. Historically it was an early inn in Bundarra, then a post store and a general store. It has major historic links with the Yee family who operated the business for 43 years and the Kwong Sing chain of stores. The building was a major social and commercial focal point in Bundarra The length of time that the store was conducted by the Yee family and the link with the Kwong Sing Store provides the opportunity to research the link between Chinese immigrants and general stores throughout the New England region. The buildings are representative of the development of Bundarra as a significant service town.

Historical Notes or Provenance:

In March 1904, storekeeper Joseph Reynolds called tenders for construction of a brick store and residence at Bundarra. The building, completed by contractor J. Lonsdale, occupied the site of the former timber Post Office Store. The Bundarra and Tingha Advocate, 27 August 1904 reported that ‘The store portion of J. Reynolds’ new premises is being rapidly proceeded with, and should be completed inside a fortnight’. The building was completed in November. The residence was to be known as ‘The Braes’ and was described in detail in the Bundarra and Tingha Advocate, 19 November 1904. In August 1905 an acetylene gas plant was installed in the building with eleven burners.Arthur Cecil Yee (Ah Cok Yee) and Daisy Ethel Yee (nee Young) purchased the store in 1929 and managed the business under the name of Kwong Sing and Company. They made an extension at the rear of the building in about 1938.Arthur Cecil Yee migrated to Australia as a young man under the sponsorship of Mr Percy Young, the owner of the general merchants store known as Kwong Sing and Co at Glen

Innes. He worked at Kwong Sing and Company as its accountant for some years. He met Daisy Ethel Young, the daughter of Mr Percy Young who was born in Glen Innes in 1907. The couple were married in Hong Kong on 18 July 1928. They returned to Australia in 1929 and purchased the existing store in Bundarra. By October 1937 Kwong Sing and Co of Bundarra advertised in the Uralla Times. After World War Two the business was incorporated under the name of Kwong Sing and Company Pty Ltd with Mr Yee as Governing Director and Mrs Yee as its first Company Secretary. In 1972 the business was sold to Mr and Mrs Sid Hanna and Mr Ken Burling, all of Inverell. In appreciation of their service to Bundarra for forty-three years, the citizens of Bundarra gave Mr and Mrs Yee a public farewell before they retired to Sydney in 1973. Arthur Yee died in 1981 and his wife Daisy Yee in 1997. During his time in Bundarra, Mr Yee bought out his brother, who was known as Fred Rae ,from China. Mr Rae started another general store in Bundarra which traded under the name of Jang Hing and Company. It ceased after Mr Rae’s death.A former Inn of circa 1870’s converted into a general store with a separate residence. Under the title, ‘New Building’ the correspondent writing in the Bundarra and Tingha Advocate reported that the imposing structure occupied the site of the old Post Office Store- a wooden building which at the time of its demolition was over 40 years old and which in its earlier days had been an hotel, and later on a post office and a store. The residential portion of the old structure was first pulled down and the foundations for the new store laid in place. The brick building was 63 feet in length by 31 feet in width, and 14 feet from floor to ceiling, enabling Mr Reynolds to carry out and display a large stock. The store was surrounded by wide veranadahs, and is well lighted and ventilated. The private portion of the new premises stood on the site of the old store. The store joined it on the north west side. The residence, ‘The Braes’, had a very fine hall 6 feet by 53 feet by 11 feet high. There were six large rooms and a kitchen and bathroom. The dining room measured 30 feet by 15 feet and the sitting room was 18 feet by 15 feet. The ceilings throughout were of ornamental steel. The windows had all the modern working attachments and the building reportedly cost about 1300 pounds

Physical Description: The group of buildings consist of the General Store, the house called 'The Brae' and Store House. The shop is a vernacular brick building with parapet to Bendemeer Street, behind a hip roof parallel to Oliver Street and right angle timber posted verandah. Prominent in its corner position and in the centre of the townscape. Underneath the building is a cellar.

Further Comments:

Criteria a) Historically highly important for its period of operation under the Yee Family. To a lesser extent associated with builder J. Lonsdale. The site is historically linked with a former inn, post office store and throughout the 20th century as a general store.

Criteria c) The general store complex is highly prominent on its street corner and in the centre of Bundarra. Its architectural detail show how a general store and residence were combined.

Criteria d) The store has been a major social and commercial focal point in Bundarra for well over a century.

Criteria e) The length of time that the store was conducted by the Yee family and the link with the Kwong Sing Store provides the opportunity to research the link between Chinese immigrants and general stores throughout the New England region.

Criteria g) The buildings are representative of the development of Bundarra as a significant service town.

Criteria f) It is rare that a Chinese family conducted a general store for a long time in a small community.

Integrity / Intactness: The structure of the building is still intact.

Criteria b) Historical associations with Reynolds who built the store, the Yee family who operated the store for 43 years as a Kwong Sing Store and later Sid Hanna and Ken Burling in the 1970s..

Statement of Significance:

St Mary The Virgin Church is a well composed church in the Gothic Revival style built of masonry with slate gable roof, metal crosses at end and bell cote over the transect. It is an important local landmark and streetscape of Bundarra. It is linked to the Clerk family and attributed to architect Horbury Hunt and retains an active social and religious focus. The St Mary’s Anglican Church has landmark, historical association, streetscape, aesthetic, social, and research significance.

Historical Notes or Provenance:

The foundation of the Church of St Mary The Virgin was laid on 21 August 1874 by Bishop Turner, then Bishop of Grafton and Armidale. The people of Bundarra had met as a congregation from much earlier times; Reverend F. Rowe was the first minister in 1859.The Parish of Bundarra originally included Inverell, Tingha and the surrounding districts. When Inverell separated on 23 June 1874, the parish included small settlements at Copeton, George’s Creek, Kinstown, Ollera, Stanborough, Tenterden, Wandsworth and Yarrowyck. In 1985 these were included in the Parishews of Guyra and Tingha, except for George’s Creek, Kingstown and Yarrowyck, which remained in the Bundarra Parish. The first church building was a small wooden or slab construction. It was erected in 1857, principally at the expense of Mr E.G. Clerk of Clerkness Station. It was built on the northern side of the river, where the aged care centre stands (formerly the District Hospital). This first church building was gutted by fire in the late 1860s. Land was set aside by Mr. E.G. Clerk for the rebuilding of the present church.Work on the present church commenced in 1874 with the aid of parishioners using local building materials. The building was consecrated in 1878 when the Vicar was the Reverend C.C. Greenway, son of the famous architect, Francis Greenway. The vicarage and church land on 199 acres was purchased by Edward G. Clerk for 199 pounds. This was sold to the

Right Reverend W. Tyrell, Bishop of Newcastle and the Reverend Charles Capel Greenway for 207 pounds 5 shillings on 10 December 1868. The Clerks of Clerkness Station also provided accommodation until a vicarage was built on land donated by Edward Clerk. As the old vicarage was situated on the river bank it was subject to flooding. It continued to be occupied until 1949 when its foundations were damaged by a major flood. In about 1918 the vicarage in Bendemeer Street was purchased. By November 1903, an organ fund had been established to raise funds for a new organ. Early in May 1904, a recital and program of sacred songs was held in the church to celebrate the arrival of the new organ. Installed by Mr B. Dyson and costing ₤37, it was described as ‘not only excellent in tone but also handsome in appearance’.A reserve for public buildings for the Corporate Trustees of the Diocese of Armidale was notified on 24 December 1861. It was about five acres on section 9. The Church of England site was dedicated on 2 July 1863. The parsonage was situated on section 17 allotment 8 and the church on allotments 9 and 10. In 1937 the land was vested in the Corporate Trustees of the Diocese of Armidale.Hunt’s design was tabled by Bishop Turner at an Armidale meeting in April 1872, and two and half years later, the memorial stone was laid. When the builder abandoned his work, the contract committee subcontracted his work. The brick walls were up to full height by November 1875 and the church was almost completed by July 1878. The memorial stone was set on 21 August 1874 and opened about July 1878.Vicarage: The old vicarage was demolished early in March 1950.Bundarra was first under the control of the Reverend Septimus Hungerford. It next became part of the Parish of Warialda under the Rev. F.R. Kemp in 1853. The history of the Clerkness or Bundarrah was outlined in Bishop Tyrell’s report on the state of the diocese, dated 28 September 1857. The first building erected was a church, modern both in design and material, built in 1857 on the north side of the Gwydir River on the present hospital site. The land chosen for the Glebe consisted of 199 acres on which the old vicarage was built. In 1859 that the Rev. C.W. Rowe took up residence in Bundarra but in November he suffered an accident and died from his injuries. It appears that Mr Rowe never lived in the vicarage that was a fine stone building, with thick walls of basalt and interior cedar woodwork. When Bishop Turner prepared a list of all church properties, “Bundarra comprised 199 acres, enclosed by a two rail fence, 21 acres cleared with a parsonage of stone and wood and half acre, weatherboard building used as a church’.The old vicarage was first occupied by the Rev. F.D. Bode, vicar from 1857-1862. Other clergy included: Reverends John Wright 1862-1865; C.C. Greenway 1865-1878; F.W. Harris-Walker 1878-1879; F.R. Taylor 1879-1881; G.C. Robinson 1881-1882; R.W. Wilson 1883-1885; F. Morrish 1885-1895; J. Smith 1896-1906; Thomas May 1906-1910; F. Greville 1910-1911; F. Higgins 1911-1915 and H. Border 1915-1926.The vicarage was built during the time of the ministry of Reverend H. Border. The church was also restored with the removal of the shingles and the laying of the slate in 1924.Since that time, the vicars have been A. Battersby 1926-1933; F.S. Young 193-1934; J.A. Reynolds 1934-1946 and W.V. Rymer. (The Armidale Diocesan News published in the Inverell Times, 27 March 1950)

Physical Description: The foundation stone was laid by Bishop Turner 21/8/1874. The incumbent being Rev. Charles Capel Greenway and Son of Francis Greenway. The church is of flemish bond face brick with a slate roof. A latern with shingled base and trefoil cutouts is above the nave, a separate porch to the south and vestry to the north are its distinguishing features externally. Inside a scissors roof truss and some stained glass can be seen. The restrained decorative polychrome brickwork is another feature. In the church are various memorials with names of local pioneer families recorded: Hays from ‘Stony Batter Station’; Forster from ‘Abington Station’; Edward George Clerke founder of ‘Clerkness Station’, and William Henry Morse of ‘Abington Station’. The cross in the grounds at the eastern end of the church is in memory of Joseph A. Reynolds, Vicar of Bundarra, 1934-1946. The design has been attributed to architect John Horbury Hunt, but this is disputed; a flowing description was published in the publication entitled John Horbury Hunt Radical Architect 1838-1904:A porch on the south of the rectangular plan is balanced by a vestry-transept diagonally opposite, and a bellcote adorns the slate roof, signifying the junction between the nave and chancel, as at Kangaroo Valley. Buttressed walls contain irregularly grouped lancets. The chancel windows are raised above a wide band of decorative brickwork around its three outside walls. In the north a trio of circular windows, echoing a trefoil, fill the appointed arch panel, while the south wall has a group of five very narrow lancets. The west wall has two single lancets set on each side of a central buttress. All the roof timbers are ‘as from saw’. Scissor trustees, set on the alignment of the buttresses, support closely spaced rafters with chamfered roof boarding above.Inside, regrettably the face brick walls have been painted. The east end base courses have been disfigured by cement rendering in a futile attempt to overcome rising damp, an this inappropriate material also surrounds the memorial stone of three small marble blocks.
