From the Pastor’s OfficeThe Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

The whole Coronavirus experience is teaching us lots of life lessons. If we

thought we were invincible before I guess that myth has been squashed. It

took one long sneeze from the Orient and we were all flattened. The first

reactions were interesting. Some people just denied this was happening.

We go into denial lots of times in the face of crisis. We are informed of the

sudden death of a loved one and our first reaction is to say, this is not

happening. Other people just freaked out. I did not like the experience of

going to the market and finding whole shelves empty. Panic buying. In the

face of crisis we grab and grasp for something to make us feel just a little

bit more secure. It is understandable. We were denied lots of things and

we didn’t like it. I sympathize with those of you who have young children.

Judging by the posts on TikTok you were all going crazy at home. I remember

my sister in law telling me about her experience of going to the market.

She remarked her realization that people go out shopping and we buy all

kinds of things we really don’t need. Coronavirus has reduced us down to

the realization that for life to be meaningful we need only a few things.

Having a closet full of shoes that have never been worn is not going to

make a bit of difference to our situation right now. During this time we

have had lots of people writing to the Church. Most of them wrote letters

of support. Some complained because that is all they do. What has been

interesting is to hear people say that they miss going to Church and they

miss receiving Communion. When the Church was open and we had all

those Masses, things were different. They never thought about it. Now

that they are denied it, people are yearning for Church and the presence

of Jesus in their lives. It takes a famine sometimes to understand what

real food is, to understand what starvation is. We love the Lord. We love our

Holy Communion. It takes a Coronavirus to make us wonder what Jesus

meant when He said, “I am the Bread of Life.” I realize I can’t eat shoes. I

need something that will sustain me right now. Spiritual food matters. It

feeds the soul. I need to hear the Word of God. It feeds the soul. I need to be

in Communion with God. I never knew that I was spiritually hungry before.

Now I know.

With love,

Fr. Pat

St. Vincent de Paul will sponsor the monthly “green bag” collection this weekend to

help our parishioners and folks in our parish boundary in need of assistance. Here

is a note from our SVDP team:

Recently, one of our St. Vincent de Paul teams had the pleasure of assisting a woman who had been homeless and living in

her car. She is now working and striving for a better life. She had moved into an apartment and had very little furniture, bedding,

linens, pots & pans and kitchen utensils. She said she wanted to make a grilled cheese sandwich, but couldn’t because she

had no spatula to turn it with or to get it out of the pan. We were able to help with some of her bills as well as to help obtain

some much needed household essentials. Thank you so much for your generous donations which enable our ministry to provide

assistance for our neighbors. Because of your support, we have all changed this neighbor’s life for the better.

FAMILY FAITH & GENERATIONS OF FAITH 2020 SUMMER CHALLENGE “CHALLENGE”: Traditionally, Summer Challenge is a

week of fun, faith formation and service for our middle school students. Teams

come together to learn about our Catholic faith and the spirituality of service before

being sent out around Austin to serve. This year, we have to be creative! Summer

Challenge is an important part of who we are at St. Catherine and we're not willing

to let COVID-19 stop us! More than ever we need to help our young people learn

to be part of the common good by putting others before themselves and give their

time, talent and treasures so others might have a better life. The program will

look different this year, that is why we're calling it the 2020 Summer Challenge

CHALLENGE! It will take place the week of July 12. For more information and to

register your team, visit www.stcatfamilyfaith.com/summer-challenge-2020.

Liturgy

TODAY WE CELEBRATE THE TRADITIONAL FEAST

OF CORPUS CHRISTI, now called the Solemnity of

the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. Corpus

Christi Sunday developed during the Middle Ages

through the efforts over approximately forty years

on the part of Juliana of Liège, a 13th-century

Norbertine canoness. Born in Liège, Belgium, a city where there

were groups of women dedicated to Eucharistic worship, Juliana

developed a special veneration for the Blessed Sacrament

and longed for a feast day outside of Lent in its honor. The

institution of Corpus Christi as a feast in the Christian calendar

came in the year 1264 at the request of St. Thomas Aquinas,

who wrote the hymns and prayers for the feast. Its purpose

was, and is, to emphasize and celebrate the presence of Jesus

in the Eucharist. A procession with the Blessed Sacrament in

a monstrance began a tradition of public displays of faith –

procession, incense, flowers, canopy, monstrance! For centuries

people looked on and adored our Lord in the Eucharist, singing

about the awesome presence of Christ among us, remembering

the Last Supper, spiritually communing but rarely daring to

receive the Body and Blood of the Lord in Holy Communion.

Today we understand once more that the Eucharist is meant

to be received inwardly by Christ’s earthly body, the Church.

The Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ calls us to ponder

the love of our Savior, who chose to remain with us and serve

us in a most ordinary way; and to ask how we as his disciples

might be present to and serve one another, following in his

footsteps.

HELP US KEEP EVERYONE SAFER AT MASS! As more people

return to attending Mass in person, the effort to manage the

seating and movement of the congregation becomes both

more important and more challenging. At the same time,

many of our volunteers remain unavailable to serve due to

ongoing concerns over the coronavirus. So we are doing more

with fewer Ushers! To help us make things go more smoothly

and to help ensure yourself a place in the church:

• Arrive early for Mass.

• Follow the instructions of the Ushers, especially during

Communion and at dismissal at the end of Mass.

THE READINGS FOR SUNDAY MASS are available on

the parish website, as well as the text of the Gloria

and Creed. Visit the livestream page and click the

button that says ‘Worship Aid.’ When you enter the

church, use your smartphone camera and the QR

codes on posters in the Narthex to go directly to the

worship aid page.

Community Ministries

CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING CORNER:

June 13-14, The Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ

This Sunday we celebrate the gift of the Body and Blood of

Christ, which gives us life! In the Eucharist we share that taste

of heaven; that glorious banquet of the kingdom, which is

Christ’s promise to us. But this share of heaven calls us to a

way of being that reflects heaven – a life of generous self-

sacrificing love. During this opening week of the Fortnight of

Freedom, the Freedom to serve, how will we express the love of

Christ that has been given so generously to us?

AUDIO VISUAL MINISTRY: We are seeking interested

volunteers to join this ministry, which helps the

where your skills and talents could make a positive difference.
