MISSION STATEMENT The mission of Sacred Heart Parish is to be the spiritual focal point for the Catholic Christian community in our portion of the Diocese of Des Moines. This community:

Believes and proclaims that Jesus Christ is Lord;

Calls its people to experience and put into practice the love of Jesus Christ;

Draws its people into the social and spiritual life of the parish so that each has a sense of belonging;

Seeks to help its members take on the "mind of Christ" through prayer, study and worship;

Uses and returns the gifts and talents God has given; Is itself a sign calling its members to hear and respond in ministry to the spiritual and temporal needs of people within the parish and beyond.

Five Spiritual New Years Resolutions By Fr. Edward Looney

On New Year ’s Day many people re-evaluate their lives. They examine how their lives were in 2017and make resolutions about how 2018 can be the best year! All too often, when we make resolutions we make too many. Instead of thinking of 5-10 resolutions, why not focus on just one or two? If you are interested in igniting your spiritual life, here are a few simple suggestions for your New Year’s resolutions:

1. Patron Saint for the New Year It is a tradition for people to choose a patron saint for the New Year. Some people do this by putting several names in a hat and drawing one, but maybe you would like to develop a devotion to a particular saint. If there is a saint that you have been fond of, why not learn more about them this year? Ask for their intercession daily. Want a random saint? The internet is full of stories about the lives of obscure saints! You are bound to find one!

2. Read the Scriptures Maybe you don’t have time for that much reading. Why not dust off your bible, and begin reading the Gospels. Choose one of the four gospels and read small excerpts each day. Read a small snippet, 5-10 verses a day. You will learn more about Jesus, and you will come into contact with the living Word of God.

3. Pray a Decade of the Rosary Many people want to have a stronger devotion to Mary. Maybe 20 minutes of praying the rosary is a lot of time. Some people find five decades to be a lot! Why not pray a decade a day? In five days’ time you will have completed one set of mysteries. Then begin again. If the rosary doesn’t appeal to you, there are many other Marian devotions. Find the Marian devotion that suits you and go with it.

4. Do Spiritual Reading There are treasuries of spiritual books out there and reading a small portion for five minutes a day can be of great benefit. The saints have written many books that will surely lift you up. There are also contemporary writers like Scott Hahn who can help you in your spiritual life. Pick up a book today!

5. Do a Nightly Examination of Conscience Before we go to Confession, it is recommended that we examine our consciences. In the new year, consider pausing each night before bed, and reflecting on the movements of your day. Be thankful. Be contrite. Ask God for help in whatever tomorrow will bring.

Conclusion In addition to our physical health conscious goals, we must also be conscious of our spiritual life when making our annual resolutions.

MASS INTENTIONS FOR THE WEEK

READINGS FOR THE WEEK

GRATEFUL HEART ~ GIVING HEART

The parish buildings where we come to worship God, to learn about our faith and to gather as a Christian community, exist because of the generosity of past generations. Catholics before us gave to build our parish. We have an obligation to

give in order to maintain what they built and to pass it on to the next generation.

JAN 1—SOLEMNITY OF MARY

The Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God is on Monday January 1, 2018. Because this Solemnity falls on a Monday, it is not a Holy Day of Obligation. However attending Mass to celebrate this Solemnity is a great way to start the new year. Mass will be offered at 9am on Monday January 1st!

WHAT A GREAT WAY TO START OUT YOUR NEW YEAR! SPEND SOME TIME WITH OUR LORD IN ADORATION

Sacred Heart Parish continues to have Adoration every First Tuesday of the month. The Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will occur after 8:00 am Mass & reposition will be at 7:00 pm. Our next opportunity for Adoration will be Tuesday, January 2nd. You are welcome to stop in anytime from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm. Please use the North Church Doors - the other doors will be locked. In the event of a funeral, Adoration will be suspended for the duration of the funeral and will resume after the funeral for the remainder of the day. For more information, visit the Sacred Heart website under “worship”.

DECORATE FOR ORDINARY TIME

The Art & Environment Committee will be decorating our church for Winter Ordinary Time on Sunday, January 7 at 2pm. We need a lot o f help putting the Christmas trees and other decorations away. Service hours available for teens.

CASSEROLES COLLECTION FOR THE FAMILY VIOLENCE CENTER - JAN 6/7

The Sacred Heart Women’s Guild is coordinating efforts to provide 20 casseroles each month to the Family Violence Center. YOU CAN HELP—please make a casserole! Each casserole should be in an 8 X 8 aluminum container, frozen, and labeled with the recipe, and thawing/cooking instructions taped to the outside. Casseroles may be put in the Parish Center freezer when you come to Mass on Jan 6/7. Please call Judy Schwartz at 556-7788 if you would like to make one or more casseroles over the course of the year.

YOUNG FAMILIES CORNER RCIA—RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS

BECOMING CATHOLIC…HAPPY NEW YEAR!

“Ever since December 25, we have been celebrating Christ’s birth. On the last day of His octave, we honor His Mother. There is much to contemplate on this day – it’s the day of Christ’s naming, it’s a day to pray for peace and it’s the start of a new year of grace.

As the New Year begins, we look at Mary as a model for renewed Christian life: in her openness to the Holy Spirit, her radical assent to God’s will for her life, her patience through suffering, and her willingness to bring the Savior into the world. Those are all qualities that would make any of us better people in the coming year.

January 1 is also World Day of Peace. In his message for the World Day of Peace, Pope Francis urged families, faith communities, government leaders, and the international community to practice non-violence and work to build a just peace. Working together, we can be vehicles of Gospel non-violence and a just peace. Take time today to pray for peace in our troubled world.” (USCCB.org)

Looking for hope? Seeking a spiritual home? Wanting answers to life’s big questions? We invite you to explore the Catholic Church and find out how a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ can change your life for the better. We welcome all inquiries and look forward to accompanying you. Contact C a s e y C o n n e r , R C I A d i r e c t o r , a t [email protected] or 515-225-6414 ext. 309.

mano derecha.
