The “low hanging fruit” were
picked a long time ago.
Since 2008 achieving minimum
compliance requires education for
all and great care…

EPC – improving on specs of the reference dwelling
Section C.1, TGD L(2011): ‘Table C1 in TGD L(2011) is used to define a notional reference
dwelling of the same size, i.e. same floor area and volume, and with the same area of
opaque fabric elements, i.e. wall, roof and floor, as a dwelling being assessed’
We suggest that a good start to ensure overall compliance is to make sure whenever
possible that each element is at least 60% better than the spec. used in Table C1. In that way
some of the ‘heavy lifting’ is shared.

This jump isn’t economic
or perhaps even
possible, other energy
savings need to be found
Stamford Brook in the UK is an
estate of about 700 dwellings
designed in 2002 and finished
in 2007.
The performance gap at
Stamford Brook was
equivalent to dropping two
standards, so did another
timber frame project studied
What happens when we measure how we actually build?
It was designed to a standard
~15% above the UK Part

In terms of external wall insulation, it’s not enough to care about energy
efficiency and controlling costs, we have to care about the quality of built
heritage and preserving the best parts of the physical character of communities
Externally insulating - without losing character
The EU has reflected this focus with the SUSREF, REFURBAN, 3Encult programmes
