INSTRUCTIONSEssentially an essay consists of three MajorParts:

.:. The-Introduction

.:. The Main Body

.:. The Conclusion

The Introduction is intended to lead thereader into the topic and clarify what theessay will specifically deal with. It usuallyconsists of one paragraph, but this dependson the length of the Essay and amount ofbackground information the contextrequires. The introduction will contain a keysentence (or, if necessary, more than one)that represents the thread running throughthe whole essay. This sentence is called thethesis statement.

The Main body deals with the major ideasthat support the thesis statement. Each mainidea is presented in a separate paragraph("One Notion, One Paragraph") anddeveloped with supporting ideas in the formof explanations, definitions, or similar, andillustrated with examples where appropriateor necessary.

The conclusion brings the reader back to thepurpose of the essay and draws all the pointstogether before making a final comment onthe result of the discussion / argument. Oftenthis final comment will point towards someconsequence the discussion may have for thefuture or make some observation about whatthe discussion has revealed on a generallevel.

Ultimately an Essay will show a progressionfrom a general level (in the introduction) downto the specific (thesis statement and body) andback up to the general level again (conclusion).The reader will be expecting this so it gives youressay a sense of completion.

Getthe Balance Right

Youprobably know that all Essays should havean introduction, body and conclusion. Less wellknown is that the blance of these elements incrucial.Agood rule of thumb is:

Introduction: 10%Body:80%Conclusion: 10%

If you get these elements out of blance yougnerally have a poor Essay.

Important: Have a Thesis (statment)!

An Essay is a waste of time to read if it does nothave a thesis. ItMUSThaveone.

This is something that most students havetrouble with. A"thesis" means a personal pointofview on a topic that you have argued for.

Often students are frightened about havingtheir own point of view. However, there isnothing to be worried about. It does not meanthat their point of view must be completelyoriginal; often they can find references in thelibrary where other people argued for thesame idea that the student shars.
