    UPS Maintenance Tips

The batteries in any UPS can endure and serve better, if they receive proper maintenance.

Most users rarely maintain their UPS & never bother to check the health of the UPS until it goes dead

or a Power Crash/OS Crash. When you take care of your UPS, you will be able to extend the life of

your UPS and in turn Your Computers Data & Parts including

Mother Board, CPU, RAM, HDD etc.

Always Keep the UPS Connected to the Power Socket - Switch

    ON

Check for any Loose Connection & Sparkling SoundKeep the UPS on a Flat Wooden Surface Preferably

Do not use Cover / Cloth Over -it- suffocates UPS and Kills itAlso do not Pile Books and Diaries over UPSDo not throw the Packing Materials, Keep Safe

When you Go-On Long Leave, Charge Fully, Remove all Plugs &Store it in a Dry Place in the Original Packing Cover

    For the First Time Recharge

Normally the new UPSs (Battery) are Factory Charged before packing. Even though youneed to charge it, for the first time, 16 Hours. Then allow it to discharge, and again charge it

to 16 Hours. After 3 to 5 Cycles, (Charging 16 Hour and using its maximum Capacity) the UPS

    works with its full efficiency.

    Power Options Properties

Every computer and laptop has options that allow them tomake changes to the power management tools. In aWindows PC, check under "Control Panel" and you will find

the power options. Change the Power Setting and click

turnoff monitor after 3 minutes or as per your Choice to

    save power.

You can Change the settings for Monitor, Hard Disk, Stand by time,

Hibernate Time etc. After that set time the required action will take

place. In Windows 7, these power saving tricks are automatically

enabled. Still you can change from Control Panel.

Close Unnecessary Programs Look at the programs that start up along with your operating

system. If you don't have to use them immediately, right

click on the icon and go into options. Scroll through the list

until you can turn off the option to have the program open

whenever you start the PC / Laptop. When you use an

application, close it when you are done.

Programs that are left open will use system resources and power

drain to UPS very fast (During Power failure). If you only run few

programs at a time, the PC will use less power and it will be able to

stay on UPS Battery power quite longer.

If the Power Failure is frequent and unpredictable. Please save your work and Shut down(Read Hibernate) the Computer and the UPS. This keeps the UPS ready for the next power

failure. Or else, after a Backup use, if the UPS is not charged for a minimum of 6 hours, the

battery wont bear the load of CRT Monitors. And there will be an Operating System or Hard

Disk crash. No worry with the small sized LCDs and LEDs.

Store it properly. If you dont expect to use your UPS for a month or more, its a good idea tostore the UPS - Charge to its full capacity - Remove all power outlet wires and plugs and storein a cool place. Lead Acid batteries needs to be stored with full charge.

While transferring from one place to other place preferably transit a fully discharged UPS,and Charge it immediately upon arrival to the destination.

Adjust screen brightness. While using on Battery Power reducing the screen brightness. Turn OFF Wireless/Bluetooth. Another significant drain on your battery power is your

wireless card. You should turn OFF your wireless device & Bluetooth (if not using) when

    you're working on Battery power.

    UPS Usage Tips in Brief

New UPS must be fully charged for 16 Hours before use. New UPS needs to be fully charged and discharged (cycled) a few times before it can attain to

    its fullest capacity.

Rechargeable batteries undergo self-discharging when left unused. Always store a UPS in afully charged state for storage. (After Removing Power Plugs and from Power Socket)

Fully drain and fully recharge your UPS every month. (At least once in 3 Months) Use built-in power management on your Computer. Disable Wireless / Bluetooth when not in use. Remove unused PC/PCI Cards (PCI Modem, PCI USB) or USB devices (Pen drives, External

HDD, Mouse, Key Board, SD Cards, Broad Band Data Card) while working on UPS backup.

Don't drop or tilt the UPS. Don't expose to moisture, water or any liquids like tea, coffee & juices. Allow it to breathe free. At least keep 2 to 4 inch gap on all sides. UPS gets warmed up, while CHARGING on normal use. If it is getting too hot, there may be a

problem with the device and a qualified technician should check it.

Battery replacement - On an average, the life span of UPS batteries will be 2 years, ifmaintained well, it is recommended to change batteries at least Every 3 Years if not after 2

    Years.

Simply if your UPS runs down to 60% in less than 5 minutes, you should consider replacingyour batteries or upgrading to a larger VA unit.

A leaky or faulty battery can damage the UPS Circuit board (which is 50% of the cost of theUPS) or even may cause an electric fire.

Use correct rated batteries on Replacement Do not keep UPS in an Enclosed Place, Like Cupboards, under the rack Air should circulate around UPS for Longer Life of UPS and Battery Do not Use the UPS as a File Storing Stand Also be aware of Small Red Ants. Never allow them to enter into your UPS, they may eat away

and damage the Lacquer coating around the Transformers

Lastly Never use it for Kitchen-wares, like Mixie, Electric Stove, and Electric Bulb etc. You may use CFL Bulbs, of 5Watt to 14 Watt but that is not recommended by some UPS

    manufacturers
