The assembled cleaner will look like the drawing.

Operate cleaner only at voltage specified on data plateon bottom of cleaner .This cleaner is intended for household use.

Polarized plug To reduce the risk of electric shock, thisappliance has a polarized plug (oneblade is wider than the other). This plugwill fit in a polarized outlet only one way. If the plug does not fit fully in the outlet,reverse the plug. If it still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician to install theproper outlet. Do not change the plug inany way.

CARPET setting - turns brush rolls ON, forcleaning carpets and rugs. (Brush rolls willautomatically stop turning when handle israised to upright position.)BARE FLOOR setting - turns brush rollsOFF for cleaning hard surfact floors.

Brush roll automaticshut-offIf something gets caught in the brush rolls,the cleaner will automatically turn off.Slide the ‘Custom Control’ switch to OFF.Unplug the cleaner.Remove obstruction from brush rolls andconinue cleaning.

Carrying cleanerUse the carrying handle to lift thecleaner.

Do not lift cleaner using dirt cup handle (B).

Handle positionsThe handle of your cleaner has threepositions; upright for storage and whenusing cleaning tools; operating posi -tion for general operation on carpetand floors; low for reaching under lowfurniture. Step on handle release leverto lower handle.

Transporting cleanerPut handle in upright position. Tilt clean-er back on rear wheels. Push forward.

SettingsFor maximum cleaning performance, the following carpet height settings arerecommended.

Lowest setting: for bare floors and alltypes of carpet

Note: If the cleaner is difficult to push,slide knob to the next higher setting.

Higher settings: for very deep pile carpetwhere easier pushing effort is desired,while maintaining good cleaning perfor-mance.

Carpet heightadjustmentThe cleaning of carpet and rugs takesplace at the nozzle (C).When it is necessary to raise and lower thenozzle for various carpet pile heights, slidethe nozzle control knob (D) to the desiredsetting.

Handle positionFor ease in sliding knob, place handle inthe upright position and tilt cleanerbackward.

Cleaning lightweightflexible rugsStand on one end of rug and movecleaner toward other end or edge. Before reaching edge, push down onhandle. This will lift up the nozzle (frontof cleaner) and will prevent rug fromclinging to cleaner. Continue to lift upnozzle so that when you have reachedthe edge, it is completely off the rug.Move cleaner back to start again, lowernozzle, and use only forward strokes.

Edge cleaningSpecial edge groomers are provided onboth sides of the nozzle to remove dirt incarpet near baseboards and furniture. Guide either side of nozzle parallel toedge of carpet or furniture.

Stair cleaningUse the hose and powered hand tool orfurniture nozzle for stair cleaning. CAUTION: To prevent the cleanerfrom falling, always place it at thebottom of the stairs.

With handle in upright position, cleanfrom bottom to top.

Select proper toolF. Dusting brush may be used forcarved furniture, table tops, books,lamps, lighting fixtures, venetian blinds,baseboards, shutters, and registers.

G. Furniture nozzle may be used forupholstered furniture, draperies, mat-tresses, clothing, automobile interiors,and carpeted stairs.

H. Powered hand tool may be used forupholstered furniture, carpeted stairsand hard-to-reach places.

I. Crevice wand can be used in tightspaces, corners and along edges insuch places as dresser drawers, uphol-stered furniture, stairs, and baseboards.It can also be used for extra reach withthe dusting brush and/or extensionwand.

J. Wand is used to give extra length toyour hose. Use it with any of the abovetools.

Cleaning toolsWhen using cleaning tools, cleaner han -dle should be in the upright positionto activate the automatic “brush rollOFF” and for convenience in movingthe cleaner from one area to another .

Attach wand and toolsAttach tool or wand to the hose (K) bypushing it firmly into hose.

Attach second wand or tool to wand (L)by pushing it firmly onto the wand.

Twist wand or tool slightly to tighten orloosen the connection.

How to clean toolsTo clean the hose and the poweredhand tool, wipe off dirt with a clothdampened in a mild detergent. Rinsewith a damp cloth. Do not submergepowered hand tool in water.

Cleaning tools may be washed in warmwater with a detergent. Rinse and air drybefore using.

How to attach toolcoverThe tool cover is designed with a “break-away” feature which allows it to snap free ifit is pushed open too far.

To reattach, align hinges of cover with slotson sides of tool storage area.

Push cover down to secure in place.

The dirt cup assembly consists of thefollowing parts:Lid (A)Dirt Cup (B)Pre-filter (C)HEPA Cartridge Filter (D)Dirt Opening (E)Handle (F)

While the cleaner is in operation, the pre-filter screen will stop larger debris fromentering the HEPA cartridge filter chamber.This larger debris will be seen collecting inthe left side of the dirt cup. The HEPA car-tridge filter will collect fine particles thathave passed through the pre-filter screen.

When to emptyWe recommend that the dirt cup beemptied before the dirt reaches the dirtopening on back of cup (Fig. 3-1) or afterevery use if you prefer.

CAUTION: Very fine materials, suchas face powder or cornstarch, mayseal the filter and cause loss of suc -tion. When using the cleaner for thistype of dust, empty the cup and cleanthe filters often.

Disconnect cleaner from electricaloutlet. Do not use cleaner without dirtcup or filters in place.

Remove cup - Lift up slightly and firmlypull cup straight out.

Replace cup - Replace dirt cup lid.

Slide cup into place.

Press firmly until cup locks in place.

Filter assemblyThe HEPA cartridge filter and pre-filterare essentially self-shedding.

Tapping the side of the dirt cup asdescribed in “How to empty dirt cup”should sufficiently remove dust and fineparticles from the HEPA cartridge filterand pre-filter.

The filter assembly can also beremoved for additional cleaning.

Slide filter assembly down into cup untila light snap is felt. Gently pull up onassembly to ensure that it is seatedproperly in the cup. Ensure that no partof pre-filter screen extends above topedge of dirt cup.

Replace lid and return cup to cleaner(Fig. 3-4).

Note: If dirt cup lid does not close allthe way, ensure that filter assembly ispushed down all the way. Turn knob onlid until lid closes (Fig. 3-3).

The final filter assists in returning cleanair to the room.

To remove this filter when it becomesdirty, lay handle flat on the floor. Pressdoor tab (J) and remove door.

Lift out filter (K) and hand wash it in coldwater with mild detergent.

Clean the HEPA cartridge filter by tap-ping either of the ends. DO NOT tapsoft pleated sides of HEP A cartridgefilter as this could damage the filter .

Tap filter until no more dust particles fallfrom the filter.

DO NOT rinse HEP A cartridge filterwith water .

To re-assemble filter assembly , placelarge knob of HEPA cartridge filter inhole on bottom of pre-filter.

Snap top of HEPA cartridge filter intoplace.

Remove dirt cup and dirt cup lid asdescribed in “How to empty dirt cup.”

Grasp pre-filter frame and pull up firmly.Slide filter assembly out of cup.

Grasp end of HEPA cartridge filter andpull it away from pre-filter. Removecartridge from assembly.

The pre-filter (C) can be cleaned with abrush and then rinsed with water. Allowpre-filter to dry thoroughly.

Align grooves (H) on pre-filter frame withgrooves (I) in dirt cup.

Let filter air dry and reposition it.Replace door. Snap closed.

Should you want to replace this filter, askfor HOOVER part No. 401 10009.

Insert screwdriver between latch (N) andbottom plate (O). Press outward on latch.Pull up on bottom plate and remove.

Remove bottom plateDisconnect cleaner from electrical outlet.

Lower handle to lowest position. Turncleaner over.

Remove the two screws (M) on bottomplate.

How to replace

The agitator brushrolls

When to replaceWhen agitator brushes are worn, theagitators should be replaced.

To check condition of brushes, discon-nect cleaner from electrical outlet.Move edge of a card across bottomplate while turning agitators. To maintaincleaning effectiveness, have brush rollsreplaced if brushes do not touch card.

New brush rolls can be installed at yournearest Hoover Factory Service Center.

The edge groomersWhen to replaceThe edge groomers, located on bothsides of the nozzle, should be replacedwhen they appear worn.

What to buyWhen purchasing edge groomers, askfor HOOVER part No. 3951 1009.

Install groomersLift off both old edge groomers and slidenew edge groomers into position asshown.

Remove lens - Disconnect cleanerfrom electrical outlet.Insert end of flat screwdriver into slots inlens. Lift lens off.

Install bulb - Pull old bulb straight outof socket. Push new bulb straight intosocket until locked in place

Excessive force is not required.

Replace lens - Place one tab (L) onlens into slot. Press on lens and secureother tab.

How to replace1. Remove tool from hose and turn it sobottom faces up. Press the latches oneither side of tool and remove bottomplate (A).

2. Unscrew the two Phillips screws andremove belt guard (B).

3. Remove agitator including end plates(C) and discard.

4. Inspect belt to ensure that it is ingood condition. If belt is cracked,gouged or broken, replace it (see follow-ing section).

5. Insert brush roll through belt and posi-tion belt over gear teeth (D) on brushroll.

6. With curved ends down, slide endplates (C) of brush roll into slots (E) ontool.

7. Replace belt guard (B) making surenot to pinch brush bristles in guard. Turnagitator, to make sure it rotates freely.

Replace and tighten screws.

8. To replace bottom plate (A), insert thefour tabs on edge of bottom plate intoslots on front of tool.

Powered hand tool Belt replacementInspect the beltThe powered hand tool belt is designedto last a long time and is not normallyreplaced. However, if the belt is crack-ed, gouged or broken, it should bereplaced.

Replace beltWhen replacing belt, ask for HOOVERpart No. 38528037.

1. Remove bottom plate, belt guard andbrush roll as described in Figs. 3-21through 3-23.

The belt can be seen through the top ofthe nozzle or by removing the bottomplate and belt guard (Figs. 3-21 and 3-22).

2. Grasp turbine (E) and pull firmly toremove.

3. Remove belt from turbine pulley (F).Replace with new belt.

4. With flat sides of turbine retainers (G)pointing down, slide retainers intogrooves (H) in tool housing and snapinto place.

5. Replace brush roll, belt guard, andbottom plate as described in Figs. 3-23through 3-26.

LubricationThe cleaner is equipped with bearingsthat contain sufficient lubrication for thelife of the cleaner. The addition of lubri-cant could cause damage. Therefore,do not add lubricant to any bearings.

Thermal protectorAn internal thermal protector has beendesigned into your cleaner to protect itfrom overheating.

When the thermal protector activates,the suction motor will stop running,however the agitators will continue torun. If this happens, proceed as follows:

1. Turn the cleaner OFF and discon-nect it from the electrical outlet.

2. Check dirt cup pre-filter, HEPAcartridge filter and final filter for dirtaccumulation.

3. Refer to “Clearing blockages”section.

4. When the motor cools, the thermalprotector automatically resets andcleaning may continue.If the thermal protector continues toactivate after following the above steps,your cleaner may need servicing (see“Service” section).

Hoover CleaningPerformanceThis Hoover Cleaning Performance Sys-tem is for comparing the relative pro-gressive performance of Hooveruprights only and not for comparisonwith any other brands. The majority ofthis rating is based upon the ASTMInternational Carpet Cleaning Effective-ness Test (ASTM Test F608). Other per-formance factors include Hose Power(ASTM Test F558), Surface Litter Clean-ing, Hard Floor Cleaning, Edge Clean-ing, Cleaning Width, and Air Filtration.

Problem: Dirt inside dirt cup stopsspinningNote: Heavy debris may settle to thebottom of the dirt cup and prevent thedirt from spinning without affectingcleaning performance. The cleaner cancontinue to be used even if the dirt is notspinning inside the dirt cup.However, if the dirt does stop spinningAND there is a noticeable decrease ofperformance, check the items under“Cleaner won’t pick up”.

4. If you have aproblem

1. Disconnect powered hand tool fromhose. Remove bottom plate, belt guardand turbine as described in Figs. 3-21,3-22 and 3-28.

Remove any blockage from turbinechannel (B).Replace belt turbine, brush roll, beltguard and bottom plate.

B. If a blockage occurs during tool use:Turn cleaner OFF and disconnect fromelectrical outlet.1. Look into hose end and remove anyblockage.
