PRESIDENT’S VOLUNTEER SERVICE AWARD President Barack Obama is continuing the volunteer recognition program initiated in the 2002 State of the Union

address by President George W. Bush as he challenged all Americans to make time in their lives to assist their

neighbors, communities, the nation, and the world through service. As a result of this challenge, The Presidential

Volunteer Service Award program was developed to thank and honor citizens who met President Bush’s chal-

lenge. The council believes that recognizing and honoring volunteers sets a standard for others and encourages

them to answer the President’s call to service.
