In the New Testament there are two traditions about how the disciples come to know about Jesus’ resurrection: the empty tomb and the apparitions of Christ. Today’s Gospel belongs to the empty tomb tradition. On Magdalene’s urging, Peter and John run to the tomb, find it empty and come to at least an initial belief about the resurrection of Jesus. We do not believe that God simply revived Jesus’ corpse in the tomb, as our driver resuscitated the bunny in today’s story. Easter Sunday does not celebrate the resuscitation of Jesus, but his Resurrection. We know his ‘glorified body’ was not the same as his human body because Jesus’ presence could be encountered in several places simultaneously and he is reported to walk through walls and to vanish. The link between both resurrection traditions is the importance of Jesus’ death. In the empty tomb accounts, as in today’s gospel, the writers give us extraordinary details about the grave clothes. In the apparition narratives there are usually references to Jesus’ wounds. Whatever way they came to experience the Resurrection of Christ, the disciples knew that this was Jesus who actually died and was buried and that their personal encounter was with the one who was crucified. On behalf of Fr Pat and the parish team we wish you a joy filled Easter and a peaceful rest or holiday [for those who are taking one]. Thank you one and all for your contribution to our parish in each of your communities. It is your dedication and good will that makes the cogs go around in a very busy parish. Special thanks to the Liturgy team and all the extra people you seconded for duties during Holy Week and The Easter Triduum. Liturgy is the core business of our parish and with all hands to the wheel we are able to celebrate with dignity and grace as we journey through Holy Week and the three days celebrating the Last Supper, Death of Christ and the Resurrection. What a privilege to celebrate together in peace, mercy, forgiveness and grace- filled joy. We can only do this because God first loved and graced us. Let us be forever grateful for these wonderful gifts we continue to receive and share with others. Easter blessings to all. © Liturgyhelp Fr Richard Leonard SJ

A man was driving along the road when he saw the Easter Bunny hop into his lane. He swerved to avoid hitting the bunny, but couldn’t do so. The basket of eggs went everywhere. The driver felt guilty and began to cry. A woman saw the man and pulled over. ‘What’s wrong?’ she asked. ‘I accidentally killed the

EASTER

PRAYER

Up From the Waters!

God of new life, At the beginning of creation

Your Spirit hovered over the waters

To sanctify the seas and the land.

God of Freedom, You called your chosen people

To rise from the Red Sea of slavery.

God of Compassion, Your Beloved Son was baptized by

John And as he rose up from the waters,

Was anointed with the Holy Spirit.

Through the Resurrection of Jesus

You have filled us with the same light.

May we always walk as radiant witnesses to your love, your mercy,

your tender care and justice.

This we ask in the name of the Father,

the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Come as you Are…

Questions and all!

Do you feel a stirring to know more about the

CICCA: Sacrament

Program

Christian Initiation of Children of Catechetical age [Sacrament program for children] offers a year round registration. Children are prepared formally to receive the sacraments of Confirmation and First Communion. If your child is approximately 7 years of age call the parish office 3849 7158 to register and the process will be explained to you. These families will be made welcome at Mass and kept in our prayers during this special time.

A most worthy cause...

THE PEOPLE OF SOUTH SUDAN

NEED OUR HELP

Retiring Collection

at all Masses this weekend

Members of the Lifelong Learning/Social Justice Group were deeply moved by the account of Father Stephen’s recent visit to his homeland in South Sudan, and the plight of the people there. Their needs are enormous. Famine has been declared and many people, particularly children, are dying of hunger. CAN WE HELP? Of course we can. It was proposed at that meeting that we take up a special retiring collection at all Masses on the Easter weekend. The proceeds will be sent to the Bishop of the dio-cese from which Father Stephen has come. The generosity of people in the Upper Mount Gravatt Wishart Parish is quite astonishing. I pray that we all make this appeal worthy of our great reputation.

Beth McDonnell for UMGW Social Justice/Lifelong Learning Group

BAPTISMS Welcome to Isaac Donnelly son of Robert & Madonna;

and Peninah Whap, daughter of Phillip & Alice. They will be baptised this weekend in St Bernard’s Church.

Project

Compassion

This Appeal is an extraordinary, ongoing demonstration of the fai th, love and generosity of caring supporters, all in the name of justice and peace. It is the lifeblood of Caritas Australia; without it, we could not do the work we do.

Please donate to Project Compassion today so that Caritas Australia can bring thousands of Australians in solidarity with the world’s poor to help end poverty, promote justice and uphold dignity.

Envelopes and sharepacks are available in our churches. Please finalise your donation by

next weekend.
