“It is spring again. The earth is like a child that knows poems by heart.” This quote by Rainer Maria Rilke reminds me of the enumerable reasons it is time to rejoice for the weather, for the excitement of good times to come, and for our many, rich blessings all brought to us by our Creator. With the beautiful sunshine and mild temperatures, what a great time to be alive and celebrate life.

And for Upper Lafayette Economic Development Foundation, it is indeed the season of spring and a time to rejoice! We have much to be joyful about, including the beautiful landscape of Upper Lafayette Parish in which many residents and businesses want to invest. As I write this letter, in one week we will have celebrated the groundbreaking of the new Lafayette Renaissance Charter Academy in Couret Farms, the grand opening of our new Lafayette City Police Precinct 4 station which opened at 1820 Moss across from the Northgate Mall, and the groundbreaking that will take place on April 2 of the new Romacelli’s and Anytime Fitness in Couret Farms. And these developments are just the tip of the iceberg of the many exciting investments being made in our community.

With this beautiful spring weather, I hope you will join us at our sixth annual crawfish boil we will host on the breathtaking grounds of John Paul the Great

Academy on April 10 from 6 to 8 p.m. The best reason to be involved with our foundation is the heartwarming friendships and connections we make with fun and talented people who support our efforts. We hope to see you there.

The City of Scott is Definitely On The Move! For those of you who have not visited Scott recently, may we suggest that you are missing out! Under the highly capable leadership of Mayor Purvis Morrison and the Scott City Council, Scott is experiencing unprecedented growth and opportunity.

The Second Annual Boudin Festival is being held the weekend of April 4-6, 2014, and this family-friendly event is sure to be a great success. Great performing artists, such as Chubby Carrier, Kevin Naquin & the Ossun Playboys, Geno Delafosse & French Rockin Boogie, and many others are lined up for your listening pleasure. Last year’s inaugural event was so successful, the city ran out of tickets, and had to scramble to keep up with the demand. For more information, visit http://www.laboudinfestival.com.

We recently visited the brand new Le Petite Magasin de Scott, held each Saturday morning from 7 a.m. until noon at the Farmers Market Pavillion at 916 Cayret Street, until mid-October. Lauren picked up a few goodies from the market, including blackberry jam and hand-milled gardenia soap. Be sure to check it out!

In early March, we attended the groundbreaking for the new facilities for National Oilwell Varco. National Oilwell Varco is a worldwide leader in the design, manufacture and sale of equipment and components used in oil & gas drilling and production, the provision of oilfield inspection and other services, and supply chain integration services to the upstream oil and gas industry. The facility will consist of two 14,000 square foot buildings, expected to employ 60 people.

Welcome to New Member: Lafayette Animal AidIn early January 2014, Lafayette Animal Aid’s Development Director, Heidi Paterson, reached out to Upper Lafayette to connect with businesses in Acadiana. After a chilly meeting in January, days before the infamous 2014 snow days, we were hooked on Lafayette Animal Aid! We are so happy to welcome the furriest new member to Upper Lafayette!

Founded in 1974 and chartered as a 501(C)3 non-profit humane society, Lafayette Animal Aid is funded by donations, fundraisers, and adoption fees and is governed by a Board of Directors. Lafayette Animal Aid is a cat and dog rescue and adoption organization, located at 142 Le Medicin Road in Carencro, Louisiana. On any given day, Lafayette Animal Aid cares for

more than 100 dogs and 120 cats at the shelter, and more in their immense network of foster families. All of these animals are looking for permanent homes. Cats and dogs from the community come to the shelter as strays, owner surrenders, rescues from negligent situations, or from euthanizing shelters. Lafayette Animal Aid is considered an “all-breed” rescue group that does not discriminate against any animal due to size, age, breed, color or background. The cats and dogs that stay with them receive a safe and caring haven and all necessary veterinary care until a forever home is found for them.

One of the main goals for Lafayette Animal Aid is to find a loving, life long home for each animal in their care. They strive to find the most suitable pet for each person and the most suitable home for each animal. To reach that goal, they consider both the lifestyle and expectations of potential adopters and the personality and needs of each animal. To view their adoption policy, please visit www.lafayetteanimalaid.org/adopt.

Lafayette Animal Aid exists because of its wonderful volunteer base. If you love cats and dogs and would like to make a difference in the lives of our community’s homeless pets, they would love to hear from you. There are many

different volunteering opportunities available through Lafayette Animal Aid. If you have any questions, feel free to email [email protected], or call 337-896-1553.

The Lafayette Animal Aid website is a great resource! It shares the mission and motivations of the organization and the dedicated staff and volunteers who make it work. Explore volunteer and adoption resources, or browse the News & Events page to find out what’s happening at Lafayette Animal Aid. If you’d like to support Lafayette Animal Aid and the countless rescue animals in their able care, please visit the donation page! We encourage you to visit www.lafayetteanimalaid.org to learn more about this wonderful organization.

Nelson Warner Honored as Philanthropist of the Year

Upper Lafayette hosted its Fourth Annual Philanthropist of the Year awards ceremony at the beautiful Oakbourne Country Club on March 19, 2014. This year’s deserving recipient was Nelson Warner, who was the founding force behind Bridge Ministry of Acadiana, Inc. Nelson has a loving heart and a deep Christian faith, and the overflowing crowd of friends and colleagues that attended the luncheon in his honor was humbling.

Raymond Hebert, CEO of Community Foundation of Acadiana, shared his thoughts on philanthropic giving. His well-delivered presentation gave us much food for thought about the many reasons why people give. With Nelson Warner providing a wonderful example of heeding God’s call for action as a result of prayerful obedience, Raymond’s message really hit home.

In 2003, Nelson and Trinity Bible Church realized the great need for relationship based ministries in Lafayette’s most under-resourced neighborhoods. To meet that need, Bridge Ministry of Acadiana was established in 2003. A Christian based non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, its vision is to relationally empower lives through Spiritual Transformation, Education, and Neighborhood Revitalization. Bridge Ministry is a neighborhood outreach ministry located in the ‘Four Corners’ area of Lafayette. While the original location at 410 Huval Street is still in use, classes and programs have been moved to the new facility at 512 N. University Ave. For more information on Bridge Ministry, please visit www.bridgeacadiana.com.

Congratulations to Julie Dronet2014 Chair of Greater Lafayette Chamber of Commerce

Upper Lafayette is proud to congratulate our board member and friend, Julie Simon-Dronet, for leading the Greater Lafayette Chamber of Commerce in 2014 as its Chair. Embracing a call for working collaboratively as a region during her presentation at the annual banquet held on March 12, 2014, Julie stressed the importance of Lafayette and the surrounding parishes working as a team, billed as “One Acadiana.” The overflowing audience included community leaders from all eight parishes encompassing Acadiana, breaking previous records for attendance.

The banquet attendees were moved by the message of the guest speaker, Rebecca Ryan. Ryan identified national trends of the past few decades and particularly focused on the current decade which she identified as “Winter.” She encouraged us to realize that Acadiana must come together as a cohesive region to have significance. With the many pressing needs facing Acadiana, such as the completion of I-49 South, tort reform, improving educational outcomes and training a viable workforce to meet our growing needs in technology and engineering, we must work together collectively to leverage our talent and assets. Under the 2014 leadership of Julie Dronet, along with the highly capable Chamber

staff led by Executive Director, Jason El Koubi, the Chamber will be focused on regional collaboration. As Julie stated, “We are supporting a truly diverse list of priorities that touch multiple sectors. We feel confident that addressing these issues will accelerate the development and growth of our region’s economy.”

Julie joined Cox Louisiana in January 2010 as Director of Operations for Acadiana. She is responsible for providing leadership and focus for Cox Louisiana’s Lafayette and Acadiana operations. Prior to joining Cox, Julie spent 17 years at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, as the Director of Communications and Marketing where she served in a key strategic role.

Julie has also been very active in the community organizations/programs where she has functioned in a variety of Leadership roles: Greater Lafayette Chamber of Commerce, United Way of Acadiana, Leadership Lafayette, Our Lady of Lourdes Foundation, St. Thomas More Catholic High School Board, Lafayette Education Foundation and the Krewe of Bonaparte.

Julie is a life-long resident of Acadiana and holds a B.A. in English/Journalism with a Public Relations Minor. She and her husband, Keith, reside in Lafayette. They have two adult daughters, Sara and Natalie.

Long Awaited Precinct 4 Lafayette Police StationOpens on Moss Street

Long time business owners, residents, community leaders, and law enforcement officials gathered to welcome the opening of the new Lafayette Police Department Substation for Precinct 4 at 1820 Moss Street on March 28, 2014. As the sun peaked through the lingering clouds, the overflowing crowd joined together to celebrate the long awaited police enforcement presence in Northeast Lafayette which is situated directly across from Northgate Mall on Moss Street.

The Precinct 4 substation is manned by 28 Lafayette City Police Officers and already the visible presence has effectively subdued crime in the neighborhood which has waited for onsite police protection. Captain Cornell Montgomery will be the commanding officer in charge of the substation and Precinct 4 patrol officers.

The site is the location of a former IberiaBank branch. The 3,600 square foot building is the result of a concerted effort led by local officials, notably District 4 City-Parish Councilman Kenneth Boudreaux and the Durel administration,

to put police officers closer to the needs of local residents who have clamored for an increased police presence.

We salute Lafayette Police Chief Jim Craft and his capable team for their efforts to keep our community safe! Thank you and all of our elected officials for your efforts to ensure safe and sound neighborhoods and business conditions in Upper Lafayette Parish.

The ongoing construction of the 58,000 square foot Lafayette Renaissance Charter Academy in

Couret Farms was celebrated on the morning of March 28, 2014. The school will open in time for the start of the 2014-2015 school year and will initially offer classroom instruction for Kindergarten through 6th grade students. Additional grades will be offered as the first class of student progresses.

The crowd of celebrants included BESE Board member Holly Boffy, Lafayette Parish Assistant School Superintendent Sandra Billeaudeau, and Charter Academy board members who fought long and hard in winning approval for the new charter academy, which approval was granted by BESE in 2013 after the Lafayette Parish School Board declined the request for approval. Board President, Dr. Mary Louella Riggs-Cook gave enthusiastic opening remarks about the positive influence the additional school choice will afford students in Lafayette Parish. Charter Schools USA CEO Jonathan

Hage also delivered passionate statements about the importance of including the parents in the educational process. Charter School USA's motto is Putting Students First in every decision that they make.

Charter schools are tuition-free public schools that offer innovative instruction while meeting all state requirements. All students in the state of Louisiana are given equal access and if more students apply during open enrollment than there are seats available, a random lottery will be held in compliance with state regulations.
