Sometimes finding time to really stop and notice eludes us completely. Or perhaps you are one of those who notice bits and pieces but feel unable to stop and just stand still in the moment. The loveliness lingers only briefly, and we miss so much of the Creator’s gift in the season of new life. For much of spring a halt has been put to your Rector’s gallop. Forced to move at a snail’s pace and only cover short distances I found myself treasuring the smallest of changes in nature as the season slowly started unfurling. The fruit trees in the churchyard in full blossom, a tiny vole with big ears in the long grass, the bees beginning to wake and forage. Clusters of hibernating ladybirds made unexpected appearances at Celtic Communion services crawling around on the white lid of the wafer -box and on the back of my white cassock. A family attending the Good Friday Walk of Witness produced two of them towards the end of the service reminding us that in the midst of trouble and pain and sadness we can find beauty to lift our spirits and gladden our hearts. Sitting as a passenger in the car I had time to watch the kites flying high overhead, and on one walk discovered I was being watched from a fence post by a large buzzard. At dawn on Easter Day it felt as if the whole of Creation was singing a hymn of praise - gathered together were humans of every age, a large variety of dogs, a herd of 24 young and curious cows and high on the field beyond I spotted two hares. The birdsong resounded in the still, quiet half -light as we gathered. Then as the human voices rose in song the lowing began. And the sun rose and the smell of incense and burning wood and straw mingled with cooking bacon. And there was joy and it felt like the first day of a new creation. I wonder what others noticed that morning? I wonder if we are so busy being busy that we forget to just BE. I am learning something of the need we ignore so often, even those of us who think we are great outdoors folk, with great energy, to simply be in and with creation. Poet and priest John O’Donoghue once wrote: ‘I would love to live like a river flows, carried by the surprise of its own unfolding’. The flow is nothing to do with a person being perfect or right or belonging to the right set, and one does not even have to understand it. All we need to do is to allow ourselves to be touched and moved by the beauty around us, to find time to appreciate the moment, and admit that sometimes it is only when we are vulnerable or weak that we find the moments of true insight into the world, into creation, into God and into ourselves. We are well and truly into spring and the whole of creation is bursting into life around us.

Clusters of hibernating ladybirds made unexpected appearances at Celtic Communion services crawling around on the white lid of the wafer-box and on the back of my white cassock.

At dawn on Easter Day it felt as

if the whole of Creation was singing a hymn of praise - gathered together were humans of every age, a large variety of dogs, a herd of 24 young and curious cows and high on the field beyond I spotted two hares. The birdsong resounded in the still, quiet half-light as we gathered.

Poet and priest John O’Donoghue once wrote:

MONKTON LENT LUNCH – RESULT! A huge THANK YOU to all who supported the Monkton Lent Lunch on 29 March. Donations received (when gift aid is included) will result in over £300 being raised, £150 of which has been sent to the Salisbury Diocese fund for South Sudan to help alleviate the famine there. The remainder will go to Monkton church to help with the cost of urgent electrical repairs. A special thanks goes to the Avebury Community shop which generously donated goods and the intrepid soup makers and servers.

We are looking for someone to take on the responsibilities of the Booking Clerk.

The work can all be done from home and you will need access to a

computer.

If you want to do something of great benefit to the community and you are well organised and enjoy dealing with people then this could be for

you!

SPRING CLEANED - MONKTON CHURCH AND CHURCHYARD

A huge THANK YOU to the stalwarts who turned out to clean the church and tidy the churchyard on a glorious, sunny Sat 8 April. The church is gleaming and the churchyard neat and tidy (but no-one told the moles!). An excellent preparation for our glorious Easter Day service.

MONKTON CHURCH FLOWER FESTIVAL -

SAT 22 JULY A note for your diaries please! Monkton Church will be "All things Bright and Beautiful" on Sat 22 July (Our Patron Saint's Day - St Mary Magdalene) when it will be open from 11 - 4pm for our Flower Festival. Teas, plant and produce and tombola stalls will also be available. More details from Penny Gold.

East Kennett Literary Evening After a brief hiatus, the village of East Kennett once again enjoyed

an evening of Literature. There is something quite unique about a village coming together in

a beautiful church to enjoy a glass of wine and listen to a selection of carefully chosen readings. I, for one, love the intimacy of listening to such a varied collection of personally chosen pieces.

Could a computer programme ever produce the literary heights of the seduction scene from Thomas Hardy’s Tess, imagined in the ancient woodlands of The Chase? Bob Mann reminded us of the frozen beauty found in the intricate, detailed writing in ‘Dr Zhivago’. Susannah Thompson’s tour de force illustrating the decline implicit in Waugh’s ‘Brideshead Revisited’. Three novels which would challenge any IT specialist.

How dangerous could John Evans be? Another pertinent reading from John took us through the addictive dangers of coffee houses. Julia Kitchen gave us pure humour in Lawrence Durrell’s hilarious account of a diplomat accidentally swallowing a moth during an official dinner. Humour is always welcome and Annabel Chilvers reminded us, prompted by Mrs Beeton, that it really is better to leave one’s pets and one’s children outside in one’s carriage when visiting one’s friends. The complexities of the game of cricket were explored in Graham Kitchen’s reading of Colin Cowdrey’s autobiography.

Philip Loveday gave a remarkable and poignant reading of Ian McKewan’s ‘The Children Act’, surely the reading of the evening.

We raised nearly two hundred pounds for the church and thanked Chris Flood, who was present, for the lovely new church gates. I look forward to our Autumn evening and hope you will join us.

And in answer to the question regarding computers writing a selection of prose such as we heard. How can a machine describe the touch of a petal? Easier, by far, if they concentrate on colonising Mars.

Heartstart - CPR Training Courses

Every year 30,000 people in the UK have an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, but the survival rate is less than 1 in 10. We’re determined to transform the UK into a Nation of Lifesavers: a country where everyone knows how to save a life. There are over 1,700 Heartstart schemes across the UK supported by the British Heart Foundation where individuals or groups can attend a two-hour training course and learn how to:

• Deal with an unconscious person

• How to recognize a heart attack and a cardiac arrest

• How to perform CPR

• Deal with a person choking Respond to serious bleeding. The Kennet Valley Hall Committee is interested in providing one or more of the British Heart Foundation Heartstart courses at the hall. If you are interested in attending either as an individual or part of a community group, please register your interest at [email protected] or call Rob Duckett on 01672 861446 for further information.

Thank You

News from Berwick Bassett and Winterbourne Monkton

Spring is in the air and its time for a Spring

Clean There will be a village clean up in both

villages on Saturday 13th May. 2 groups will start in their relevant village. The Winterbourne Monkton group will meet at the standing stones on the lay-by by Middle Farm and the Berwick Bassett volunteers will meet at the triangle at Berwick Bassett by Home Farm, both at 2pm. Works will concentrate on litter picking on footpaths and village roads and strimming verges. Please wear suitable clothing but equipment will be provided. Last years event turned out to be very fruitful and enjoyable. The more the merrier.

The Cleanup will concentrate on areas within the villages. Don’t forget that you can also download the Wiltshire Council app so you can report issues such as potholes, lights out etc using your smartphone or computer. The app can be downloaded from your usual app store

Of particular concern regarding village cleanliness is the amount of dog excrement found on hard footpaths, field footpaths and verges. Even in our rural environment it is an offence not to pick up after your dog. Please don’t leave it for someone else to clean up after you.

Spring will also bring a change to your Parish Council. There will be no election for Parish Councillors on May 4th. A quorate council has been elected unopposed but there remain 3 vacancies. If you’d like to be considered to be co-opted to the council please contact the clerk below.

The first meeting of the new council will be on Wednesday May 10th at approximately 8pm preceded at 7.30 with the AGM.

Avebury & District W.I. Craft Group

The Craft Group holds a meeting on the afternoon of the first Wednesday of every month at the Social Centre, Avebury from 2 - 4pm. All are welcome. You do not need to be a W.I. member to attend. The cost is £3 per session. There are quilting courses and a variety of other crafts. For further details call Margaret on 539184

Local Table Tennis Club Success Story

Kennet Vale TTC had some great successes at this year`s Devizes Table Tennis League Championships. Many of the senior players reached finals in the Senior`s tournaments but it was in the Junior sections that the club really excelled. Rueben Tinto was a deserved Runner Up in the Under 18s, Harrison France won the Under 15/16s and Samson Cartlidge retained his Under 13s title. So well done all our boys!

To cap it all, the club`s Senior B team won the Division 2 title which will now give us two teams in Division 1, plus, we hope to have a third team in Division 2 next season

The club operates out of Kennet Valley Hall and it`s origins go back to 1969. If you are hiding your own table tennis talent and fancy a comeback, why not give us a call. Also, due to some older boys moving on to Uni` we can currently accommodate two or three new juniors. Ideally about 9 or 10 they would be introduced to this most enjoyable sport. We operate our Junior section on Tuesday evenings from 5.45 – 7.15 during the season. If you have a child who you would like to have an initial trial, just give Brian a call on 861513, or Colin on 861672.

I haven’t heard how our "old men" got on last night in the SuperVets but our young men excelled themselves last night in the Juniors. Reuben was a deserved Runner Up in the Open event, Harrison won the Under 15/16s and Sampson held on to his title by winning the Under 13s. A number of memorable matches were headed by Harrison beating the eventual winner of the Open (Connor) in the Group stage, and closely followed by Sampson's tactical display in his final where, having lost to the Wiltshire Under 13 champion in the Group stage beat him effectively in the final.

Another victory worth mentioning was John Wyles winning the Handicap Singles having had his handicap increased to -3 before the event, and although I don’t have the details we had various other finalists in other events.

Last, but not least, well done the B Team for winning the B Division.

There were many more special achievements during the

season, so overall the club has had an exceptional season. So well done everyone.

Easter Bingo –a Sweet Success ! The annual Easter Bingo event took place at the Kennet Valley Hall on April 7th with an attendance of over 70. It was nice to see many young families having a nice evening out together. An enjoyable evening was had by all with the many prize winners spread nice and evenly around the hall. A big “thank you” to Nick Helps, manager of Tesco Marlborough, for his continued support in donating all the Easter Egg Bingo prizes - including the numerous Easter Eggs distributed amongst the children during the evening, and at the end. Also a special thanks to local businesses Waitrose, for their Easter Hamper, St Peter`s Coffee Shop for their lovely Easter Cake, and our regular supporter, Marlborough Confectioners for their specially created box of chocolates. All these, plus many other prizes, made the raffle an Aladdin’s Cave of Goodies. Along with the traditional Christmas Bingo, these two events constitute the Hall`s main fund raising activity. As all the prizes were donated, the £525 raised during the evening became a net contribution to the Hall`s maintenance funds. Thanks to all who supported the event and all those who contributed to a very successful social evening.

Avebury Club Refurbishment With the help of a dedicated team of volunteers

we have recently carried out some major improvements to the Club to make it an even nicer experience when you visit.

This includes installing pumps at the bar again with beer, lager and cider now on tap, with some real ale also available at times.

There is a new 55” TV for those sporting occasions and the little room has been seriously made over in a modern style making it far more comfortable and pleasing to the eye.

Come along and see – memberships are still only £5 as well.

Wiltshire Sight Treasurer Wanted

Wiltshire Sight is an innovative, progressive local charity based in Devizes supporting people living with sight loss in Wiltshire and Swindon. They assist more than 2,500 people of all ages, as well as their families and carers. The charity’s current Treasurer is at the end of his term of office, this means they require a new volunteer to join the Board of Trustees and support them in the coming years. Chief Executive, Leanne Hubbard commented: “He has been invaluable during a transitional period for Wiltshire Sight and the team wish him all the best for the future.” They are looking for someone with a strong grasp of charity accounting or who has experience of managing multiple complex budgets. An understanding of managing an investment portfolio and accounting software (xero) would also be beneficial. Commitment and Duties: • Actively commit to the charity for, initially, a

period of three years • Attend around six board meetings a year and

take part in other events • Chair quarterly Finance Resources Sub

Committee (FRSC) meetings • Advise and guide the management team and

Board of Trustees on financial matters • Liaise with the auditors In return, you will have the opportunity to use your experience to help the charity make a real difference to the lives of people living with sight loss in Wiltshire and Swindon. Full training and support will be offered to the successful applicant. Applications from people whose lives are affected by sight loss are encouraged. Informal discussions with Chief Executive, Leanne Hubbard are welcome. Expressions of interest and CVs should be emailed to [email protected]

Avebury Parish Council

Headlines from Avebury Parish Council meetings on 7 March and 4 April 2017

Planning applications: we decided to support applications

for an extension and a car port at Freshfield, Beckhampton, a dormer window at 2 Red Houses, Green Street, a porch and extension at North Rutlands, Swindon Road, a car port at Isobel Cottage, Beckhampton and a conversion to a residential lodge at The Grange, Beckhampton.

Transport Group: following a meeting with Highways and World Heritage staff, it has been agreed that designs for A4 improvements at Beckhampton and West Kennett will be developed at the same time, and some investigatory work at West Kennett is now being commissioned. 50% of the cost of the cost of design work (£18,775) is coming from Wiltshire Council’s Area Transport Group, 25% is being met by the Parish Council and the remaining 25% is being raised by local households and businesses. West Kennett has already raised its half share; Beckhampton is well on the way to £1,000 but needs to raise about £1,400 more. So further contributions will be gratefully received! Moya Brannan (07801 684 202) is also organising a fundraising Cyclothon for the work of the Transport Group at the Red Lion over the second May Bank Holiday, from 27 to 29 May.

Defibrillator: Maggie Lewis has now raised v irtually the full cost of leasing and installing a defibrillator, which will be on the porch of the Social Centre. We will be signing the lease agreement shortly, and the South West Ambulance Trust will be providing training soon.

Coach House toilets: we have had meetings with the National Trust about our proposed partnership scheme to assist it, with voluntary helpers and grants, to improve the opening hours of the toilets to, hopefully, daylight hours throughout the year. While we are considering the feasibility of a recent Trust proposal that the Parish Council takes on the full costs and management of the toilets under a lease at a low rent, we hope our original partnership offer to assist the Trust to run the toilets can still be agreed.

National Trust update: Most items reported at our March and April meetings will have passed by the time UKN is published, but please see the National Trust’s updates in the Parish Council’s minutes on our website and the Trust’s March newsletter which was delivered to local households.

Improving dialogue between the National Trust and the Parish Council: Wiltshire Councillor James Sheppard joined our April meeting and we are exploring new ways of improving dialogue.

URC Chapel: hav ing put the Parish Council’s Community Right to Bid on hold in September 2015, we submitted our bid in February to give any local group interested in developing a scheme six months’ time to do so. We will be raising the issue at our annual Parish meeting on Tuesday 25 April and will then advise Wiltshire Council, who will decide whether CRtB conditions will be imposed on the sale.

A303 tunnel scheme at Stonehenge: we have received a reply to our submission from Highways England. All feedback is being assessed and the Secretary of State for Transport is due to make an announcement on the preferred route later in 2017. We will also be writing to the Chancellor of the Exchequer to point out that a bypass around the World Heritage Site will avoid all archaeological damage, and will also be £¼bn cheaper to build.

A damaged planter in the High Street is due to be replaced shortly.

Marlborough & District Embroiderers’ Guild

The March speaker, Vivian Prideaux, introduced us to Alec

Walker. Born in Yorkshire in 1889 Alec was given a rundown mill by his father and he started producing Vigil silk. Kay Earl responded to an advert for a designer and in 1918 Alec moved to Newlyn in Cornwall. He and Kay married and in 1920 they founded the couture company, Crysede.

Alec Walker was invited to go to Paris and was introduced to Raoul Dufy and Ossip Zadkine. Influenced by their designs he transformed his own paintings into textiles. The business continued to expand so they brought in Tom Heron (father of painter, Patrick Heron) as Manager and the company moved to the Island at St Ives. They were the first company to offer mail order, opened retail shops and sold their designs at Liberty’s.

On Monday 3rd April we enjoyed our annual Ploughman’s

lunch. After we were shown a presentation from the Embroiderers Guild which explained the history of the organisation and showed a number of textiles which have either been collected or donated to the Guild over the years. There were items from the 16th C onwards and from all over the world.

The branch has been asked to donate money towards the conservation of these items so everyone was asked to contribute threads, fabrics, magazines and books to be sold and the money raised will go towards this request.

The next meeting of Marlborough & District Embroiderers Guild will be on Monday 8 May 2017 at the Kennet Valley Hall, Lockeridge. The speaker will be Anna McDowell and her talk will be entitled “History of Dorset Buttons”. Doors open at 13.30 for a 14.00 start.

All are welcome and if you have any queries please contact 01249 750865. Further details visit our website: http://www.marlboroughembroiderers.org

Kennet Valley 60+

There were several members away for the March 60+ get

together, but we still had an enjoyable afternoon listening to

Ray Rumming talking on small rivers and springs around the

local district. Even though most of us have lived around this

area for many years one can always learn from talks and

film slides like this.

We had the usual raffle and tea with chocolate biscuits

kindly made by our tea girls.

Hope to see you all at our next meeting.

Fyfield and West Overton Parish Council

Annual Parish Meeting About 40 residents attended this meeting. Our two new Community Police Officers, introduced themselves and gave a report on their work in the locality. As usual, crime figures are low, but theft from parked cars at our local beauty spots is still an issue which they are working to address. We then enjoyed an excellent illustrated talk from Rose Somerset about the North Wessex Downs. Annual General Meeting This will be held on Monday 22nd May at 7pm in the Kennet Valley Hall.

Avebury Rocks Festival 2017 Now at its new home on East Farm Avebury Rocks is giving music lovers two days and two stages of great live music, with the option to make the most of the weekend and camp on Friday and Saturday night as well. As usual there will be an eclectic line up with something for everyone’s musical taste, from folk to rock and everything in between. Details of artists already announced can be found at www.aveburyrocksfestival.net with more to follow, and lots of new artists to discover. It’s not just about the music though there’ll be wood fired pizzas, gourmet burgers and a traditional tandoor to keep rumbling tummies satisfied and local beers, ales and ciders available at the Avebury Club bar. This year there’ll be a new addition to the drinks offering with a special gin bar provided by the gin cognisors from Scout and Sage, you’ll even have the option to take part in a mini masterclass with them over the weekend! Avebury Rocks raises funds for Prospect Hospice and by buying a ticket to the festival you’ll be helping them provide care and support in the local community. Tickets start from £5 for children and £10 for adults, full details and more information can be found at www.aveburyrocksfestval.net.
