You use the Past Simple to talk about fnished past actionsor states (I studied engineering at Oxord, I was a happychild). Phrases like last week, a year ago, in 2006 etc. makethe time reerence clear.

You use the Past Continuous to talk about an action inprogress in the past (The company was losing money). ThePast Continuous gives the background to more importantevents which are in the Past Simple.

You use the Past Perfect to emphasise that one eventhappened beore another in the past (By the time I letcollege, Id already decided I didnt want to be a lawyer).

Some state verbs like think, know, understand and seemare not generally used in the continuous orm unless themeaning is dierent: I think = I believe; Im thinking = Imconsidering something.

will is a modal verb and, amongst its other uses, one omany ways o talking about the uture (Ill see you later).

You use the Present Simple to talk about permanent acts(Im Spanish), routines (I get home at seven each evening)and scheduled uture (The bus gets in at one).

You use the Present Continuous to talk about current,

perhaps temporary, activities and situations (Im staying atthe Hilton) or uture arrangements (Im ying to Rome inthe morning).

You use the Present Perfect to talk about things thatstarted in the past and continue up to the present (Itsrained or a ortnight), personal experiences no matterwhen they happened (Ive only ever snowboarded once) andthings which have an immediate consequence (Ive lost mycar keys). Words like already, yet and since are oten in thesame sentence as a present perect verb.

You use the Present Perfect Continuous to talk about

things that started in the past and may be recentlycompleted or not yet completed (Shes been rearrangingher ofce, Ive been working here since January 2002).
