the PRESIDENTS RAMBLINGS

Greetings All,

Based on the number of Black Flies that are out, winter must be over. (I was up at camp last week and saw a mosquito so big it had a tick on it). It's fishing time, gardening time

and lawn mowing season but hopefully some time can be found for wood carving. The start of show season kicks off soon, The Belfast Show and The Top of Maine Show are in July, so there is still time to finish things up.

A big Thank You to the folks who contacted me to volunteer for the Sportsman Show

next year. Unfortunately the number of volunteers is not enough to cover the show. The Sportsman show is 3 days plus entry times, That's a large amount of time to cover and

the staff at the show seem to have no interest in the show until the week before. If any one has any interest in taking the show under their wing I will provide the contact info for the folks there, but I am not going forward with any plans for the Sportsman Show

and have informed them of this decision.

Bob Grimm President MWCA

Remember Come and Enjoy A Day At The Beach With Fellow Carvers

June 26 at Reid State Park This is rain or shine event. There are 2 large charcoal grill for cooking. One is located inside the large covered area. Bring a picnic lunch or plan on cooking a meal of your choice. Bring your own food and drink. Come for the day or just for a few hours. The park is open from 9AM to sunset. All park fees and rules will be in effect. No alcoholic beverages are allowed. All pets are to be keep on a lease. There will be no schedule activities. You are encouraged to bring family and friends. Bring your knives, if there is interest we my do a carve a round. Bring a carving project along as well, if you wish. There will be a table for show and tell. Bring something if you would like. This gathering is not just for members but for anyone who is a wood carver and their friends. Please tell all members of your carving groups, Maine Woodcarvers or not, that they are invited. This gathering is an effort to bring the organization back together. When I first joined all the members knew each other some what. I think that made a stronger group. We now seem to be split into a lot of little groups with little knowledge of the other. The only time we are all together is at the show when everyone is very busy with little time to socialize. Respectfully, Jim Irish (FMI 212-9876)

HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!!!!

MWCA CHAPTER REPORTS POLAND SPRING WOOD CARVERS Submitted by Stan Tanner

The Secretary’sTale of the 21 May 2016 meeting of the Poland Spring Carvers The temporary secretary recorded that Mr. President, Robert Grimm, insisted that there be a temporary busy-ness meeting, beginning at 1:06pm. The Secretary’s tale of the previous meeting was read. MSC to accept. A letter from Ricker Memorial Library, acknowledging our recent contribution, was displayed. The Treasurer report was given. There was no call for an audit, so it was moved, seconded, thrilled, and carried to accept the report as presented. OLD BIZ: The club brochure is in progress of being corrected and printed for use at various events. Mr. President will either beat the computer disc into submission or demand its resignation. NEW BIZ: Chuck Perry reported that he had completed an eagle cane for the York County American Legion, which was then auctioned off. Some of the proceeds were returned to him, who then passed a portion on to the PS Carvers. It was MSC to accept with our thanks, and the amount was divided between the Library Fund and the Coffee Fund. An invitation has been received from Seniors Plus to provide a combination carving display and beginners class at a gathering at Sunday River on Friday, 7 October. Arnie and others agreed to do so. Jim Irish reminded us of the MWCA gathering at Reid State Park on 26 June, from 9am to sunset. This is a social gathering for members and families, so bring your own food and whatever you’d like for entertainment or amusement. Carving tools and materials are welcome but not required. The temporary meeting permanently ceased with agreement to stop at 1:25pm. Respectfully submitted, Stanley Tanner, temporarily present secretary

Coastal Carvers Meeting 5/21/2016

Attendance 12

Old Business- none New Business- Jim Irish is having a get together for carvers June 26th at Reid State Park from 9- sunset. See newsletter for details. Coastal carvers will have a meeting June 25th as usual. Show-n-tell: Marshall made a killer whale miniature mounted on slate; Kathy made a golden eagle head painted in oil paints to learn spacing between eyes and beak; Dave made a full size brook trout on a pine board (used gauze method for scales); Gordon made a full size Black duck hollowed out/Nova Scotia style; Gary made a cottonwood bark house; Ralph made a cedar canoe on a stand; Beverly showed progress on her seal on the rock project and Richard N. made a Downy Woodpecker mounted in a tree trunk. Refreshments and coffee came next. Thanks to all who brought something in. Then everyone settled down for instruction from Kathy Webster on the carving of a quarter size loon to be painted out at a later meeting. Thank you, Kathy for supplying all of the blanks and instructions for this big project. A good time was had by all. See you in June. Respectfully submitted, Barbara Wade

14 May 2016 Today's meeting took place at Bob Perry's eclectic estate. Eleven were in attendance. There was so much great Show and Tell by members and Bob's wonderful collection of years collecting and whittling that we didn't whittle! Nice meeting and some great yummies to go with the coffee. Bob discussed the possibility of Streaked Mountain sponsoring a caricature moose project by Dave Sable, but that it is imperative to have enough participants. Time is running short to sign up for the Rhode Island Retreat- Bob's 11th year. He said it is reasonable in cost, a wonderful fellowship time. There are 8 instructors, some world class. A span of three days sponsored by Mystic Wood Carvers at the University of Rhode Island next to a Nature Preserve. Chuck Perry carved a cane for the Old Orchard Beach/York County area that Steve White raffled off, with some of the proceeds going to Chuck which he donated the money to the Steaked Mt. group and Poland Springs group with no strings attached. Jim Irish has invited everyone- any groups, family, friends to an all dayer he has reserved at the ocean view park of Reid State Park on Sunday June 26th. Bring your food, drinks, a carving knife if you want and enjoy. Options for monthly meeting places were discussed. Our next meeting in June will be hosted by Art Chamberlin at his camp in Weld at Webb Lake. .......details below.... Another option at some time is the old Pleasant Pond Grange Hall at 15 Front Street in West Sumner Village. Available for any non-profit group at no cost, so it might be a possi-bility for an extended invitational carver course.

To Art’s Camp

Take US Rt. 2 to Dixfield, turn on Rt.142 (Weld St.) at the traffic light, drive about 8 miles to Bradbury's Market, turn left onto West Side Road, drive about 6 miles. Our camp is on the right at the bottom of a hill. It's easy to drive right by. The camp is blue. There is a camper trailer in the yard. Car pool if possible, I hope to see you there!

Streaked Mt. Wood Carvers Submitted by Sheri Fowler

On the Border Carvers Submitted by Hal Britton

Jack Wilde, Owen and Ian Bolstridge, Steve Hutchinson, Greg hill, Dee Cote and Hal Britton recently attended a seminar where Gary Zettergren gave us a demonstration of his professional air brush painting skills. It became very obvious to us, from watching Gary, that patience is the key to becoming a successful air brush painter. The small detailing Gary showed us is something that can be used even to detail wood carvings. Each of us were given the opportunity to exercise our expertise at airbrush painting. Even though it was very obvious that we needed a little bit, ok, a whole lot, more practice, we were simply amazed at how a tool could be made to be used for such fine detailing. If you haven't as of yet checked out air brush painting, we recommend considering doing so. Air Brush Painting will add to your hobby.

From the Editors desk

Submitted by Bernadette Hodgkins

Just a quick reminder to please forward your email address to me if it has changed. Thanks!

Hope to see you at the Social Event on June 26th at Reid State Park. Should be fun reconnecting with other carvers that you haven’t seen for awhile. Please share this event info with all of the people that attend your meeting/get together. It is open to all people who are in-terested in the art of wood carving, wood burn-ing, turning, etc. It is a rain or shine event. If it’s raining,….. what a better way to spend the afternoon then with other carvers creating something interesting. I have talked to Bob about having a small section of the newsletter as a “classified” section. He is working on having something that will be beneficial to the membership….so it’s in the works. As of right now it would be for limited insertions per year. This section would be for things you are trying to sell, things you are looking for, announcements, etc. If you have any suggestions about this, please email me or Bob and share (whether it’s good or bad).

Thank You!!
